FOXNEWSW Fox Report With Jon Scott May 17, 2020

Drawing some criticism from some republicans. We have Fox Team Coverage with garrett tenney, Aishah Hasnie and Steve Harrigan. We begin with david spunt, hes at the white house. David. Reporter since President Trump took office a little more than three years ago, he has repeatedly criticized his predecessor, the 44th president , barack obama, in a very public way. Things escalatessed yesterday when the former president said this. This pandemic has fully finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what theyre doing. A lot of them arent even pretending to be in charge. If the worlds going to get better, its going to be up to you. Reporter trump was at camp david this weekend. He arrived on the south lawn earlier this afternoon and he hit back. Listen. Look, he was an incompetent president. Thats all ky say, grossly im competentes. Reporter President Trump and members of his team say they did not have a proper playbook to deal with the Coronavirus Crisis but obama supporters including former vp joe biden point out they did leave a playbook and the Trump Administration disbanded the Pandemic Response unit which is part of the National Security council. Well see how this all plays out especially with the election in several months. Another big story im following from the white house, President Trump late friday night fired state Department Inspector general steve linick. He is the fourth Inspector General to lose his job in the last several weeks. A source close to the investigation tells fox news linick was investigating secretary of state mike pompeo for allegedly using a political appointedy at the state department to perform personal tasks for pompeo and his wife. The president has the right to fire any federal employee but the fact is, if it looks like its in retaliation for something that the ig, the Inspector General is doing, that could be unlawful. Reporter these are the other watchdogs that have been removed over the lacks six weeks. The Intelligence Community, the Defense Department, also health and human services, a white house official told me yesterday that it was secretary pompeo who recommended the move, recommended the firing to President Trump. Ultimately, he agreed. Democrats on capitol hill, theyre furious, theyre calling for a full investigation of this firing, jon. Jon david spunt at the white house. David, thank you. An update on the status of the coronavirus here at home. Total confirmed cases in the u. S. Now topping 1. 4 million with more than 89,000 deaths and test results are coming back positive at a rate of just over 13 . This as some states are making more moves to reopen. Steve harrigan is live from atlanta, georgia with more on that. Reporter when you look at the results in some of the states that decided to open up early, it is a mixed bag. Georgia, which was very aggressive in reopening its economy, has seen no spike in new cases of the virus. Texas has seen a spike. They just had their highest single day total of new cases, more than 1800, since the pandemic began. Texas Officials Say the reason for the increase is there has been more testing. A number of governors say to really truly reopen their economies, the key factor is getting children back in school this fall, safely. Theres a critical link. In colorado, its about almost a quarter of our workforce that has kids, relies on the schools. Its similar elsewhere. You know, not everybody has the luxury of having a two parent household where one parent can stay home. Theres many Single Parents and many families where both parents work. Reporter one encouraging figure in the big picture, the average certainday death sevenday death toll has declined, stands at 1400 a day, down roughly 30 from the same measurement three weeks ago. Jon, back to you. Jon Steve Harrigan. Steve, thank you. With memorial day weekend right around the corner and warmer weather on the way, Many Americans have been growing frustrated as they wait for coronavirus restriction toss be lifted but there are signs of normalcy returning in the northeast. Some governors preparing to open beaches on friday, with limitations. Aishah hasnie is live in new york city with more on that. Aishah. Reporter jon, new york state is among the states that will reopen state run beaches over the Holiday Weekend and the governors message is simple to all the residents that live here. Your actions will determine what happens next. Now, in the meantime, new jersey went ahead and reopened some of its beaches on friday to some very large crowds. One beach supervisor told nh. Com, beach goers were behaving themselves. New yornew york city will keep e shoreline closed. Here the mayor on sunday morning futures today. For folks in local communities who walk on the beach, walk on the boardwalk, they can do that. But no swimming, no lifeguards, no congregating. Nypd will be out there, Parks Department will be out there. If people are smart about it and listen to the rules, great. If not, we might have to put up fencing to keep people off the beach. Reporter now, in florida some of the most popular beaches like miami beach will reopen ahead of the Holiday Weekend. The state began reopening tomorrow. Protests again against stay at home orders continued this weekend in albany, new york and at the Illinois State capitol. Congressman Adam Kinsinger talking about frustrations on fox at friends earlier this morning. Theyre being treated as if theyre in a hot spot like chicago and the governor when he comes out and he threatens things like im going to withhold federal funding from these local communities, that makes people even angrier. Reporter back here in new york city, the warmer weather has been bringing out crowds outside of bars and restaurants, congregating, drinking, not wearing masks. The mayor saying he is taking that very seriously and the nypd will be out, patrolling. Jon. Jon Aishah Hasnie in new york. Aishah, thank you. Coming up on fox news sunday, Chris Wallace speaks with former cdc director, dr. Tom freeden. Chris also has an exclusive interview with colorado governor jared polis, why he is casting doubt on the cdcs coronavirus death toll and a chief Economic Advisor, tonight at 7 00 p. M. Eastern, less than an hour from now. I should say a little over less than two hours from now, right after the fox report. Senate republicans are dismissing a 3 trillion stimulus bill passed by the house while suggesting that discussions on the next round of coronavirus aid will not begin until after memorial day. Garrett tenney has more. Reporter now that states are starting to open back up, Senate Republicans want to hold off on putting together the next relief package for a few weeks to see how things go and where the greatest needs are. But today, House Speaker nancy pelosi criticized that thinking, saying there is no time to waste. They may think its okay to pause. But people are hungry across america. Hunger doesnt take a pause. People are jobless across america. That doesnt take a pause. People dont now how theyre going to pay their rent across the country. We have to address this with humanity. Reporter Senate Republicans are balking at the 3 trillion package, claiming its a political wish list filled with items that arent directly related to recovering from the pandemic. My fellow republicans in the senate have tried to see things from the speakers point of view but we cant get our heads that far up our rear ends. And i think any fairminded american would agree, once they read the bill. Reporter all of this goes towards the bigger question of how long it will take for the u. S. Economy to recover and the chairman of the Federal Reserve thinks it may take until the end of next year. Assuming theres not a second wave of the coronavirus, i think youll see the economy recover steadily through the second half of this year. For the economy to fully recover, people will have to be fully confident and that may have to await the arrival of a vaccine. Reporter in terms of timing, most Health Officials continue to say a vaccine likely wont be ready until the middle of next year at the soonest. Jon. Jon garrett tenney. Garrett, thank you. Jon with the matchup for the battle of the oval office all but decided, former Vice President joe biden and President Trump prepare to go head to head. Democrats are shifting their attention to the senate with 35 seats up for grabs including 22 republican seats. It is really anyones game in the upper chamber. Jacqui heinrich is live from new york city with more on that. Reporter right now theres high undocumen unemployment ande potential this fall is there will be more Americans Without Health Insurance than when obamacare took effect. This could be dangerous for the republican senators that are defending their seats. Experts say the political environment is so partisan right now, its likely whoever wins the white house will also take the senate. As many as 8 republicans are considered vulnerable. The bigges big colorado and e are particularly concerning for republicans because President Trump lost those states in 2016. Maine senator Susan Collins is facing a challenger who out fund raised her. Cory gardner is facing off against john hickenlooper, a former governor. In a arizona, senator 345r tha mcsally Martha Mcsally lost her election but filled the seat left by john mccain. Thom tillis is running against kyle cunningham, an iraq war veteran, that race is very, very close. North carolina is obviously one of the most exea competitive bae ground states at the national level, where republicans are going to hold their convention, maybe in person, maybe not. Reporter democrats are painting republican as failing to act for their states in a time of crisis. One Democratic Political Action Committee telling fox President Trump has Senate Republicans trapped between a rock and hard place as the most vulnerable republican incumbents struggle to show independence from the party. A Republican Fund racing Committee Accuses democrats of policplight sizing the crisis. They say protecting the Republican Senate majority has never been more critical to stop the advance of reckless liberal policies. Experts say its tough to guess who has the advantage right now because what happens with the economy in november will have such an impact on the outcome of these races. Jon. Jon jacqui heinrich, jacqui, thank you. Nascar fans are definitely revved up today. Green flag, nascar is back. Jon nascar drivers starting up their engines after months of coronavirus restrictions, todays race taking place right now at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina. No fans are in attendance due to social distancing but plenty are cheering on their favorites from home. Mark meredith is live in darlington with more on the race. Mark. Reporter good afternoon, jon. There are no fans in the stands behind me but if you can listen closely you would be hearing the cars going by on the track certainly a sign that sports is back and this comes after a tenweek hiatus for nascar. Cameras captured drivers and crews showing up today and getting temperatures checked. This is one of several guidelines that nascar is working on. The press has had their temperatures taken as well. Its one of a number of steps that nascar has been rolling out to allow races to continue safely. Health screenings for crews and drivers are in place, social distancing is enforced between the teams. Teams are being limited to the numbers they can bring, 16 people at the max and schedules are consolidated. Racing legend jeff gordon says the drivers on the track today will never forget the race. Since these guys have been away from this for now, what, 10 weeks, i think its been a reminder to them, to all the competitors and to everybody that loves racing, is passionate about it, just how much it means to them and maybe that they took that for granted because of the repetitiveness and how long the season is but not anymore. Reporter and for race fans, theyre going to have a chance to get more races in this season. But there are still no plans to bring fans back into the stands as of yet. Will be interesting to see how the local economy does with this race happening but without the fans in the stands, the tourists that would normally be out here. Nascar is dedicating todays race to american front line workers. Each car thats racing features the name of a medical professional thats helping battle the coronavirus. These are the cars, if you listen closely, coming right back on the track, certainly a good sign for the racing fans out there today. Jon. Jon but no fans in the stands to cheer them on. Thank you very much, Mark Meredith. Tropical storm arthur, the first of the 2020 atlantic Hurricane Season moving closer to the North Carolina coast. Meteorologist adam klotz has a look at the forecast. Adam. Hey, there, jon. Tropical storm arthur making its way towards the coast, maybe beginning to see rain on the outer bands lifting that direction right now. Heres where the storm currently lies, just off the coast of South Carolina, winds at 45 miles an hour, outer bands of rain now hitting the state of North Carolina. We are expecting this to become heavier rain and really pass right by the state on monday, beginning monday morning, lingering through the day before eventually heading out monday night. Eventually, back out to sea. We run several different models. This is not guaranteed to make landfall. Either way, its going to pass very close to the outer banks of North Carolina. Most models stay just off the coast, still going to be close enough that we see Tropical Storm warnings now stretching over a large portion of the North Carolina coast including the outer banks with this, queer going to see wind getting up to 60 miles an hour, very heavy rain, possibly some high tides and it will depend especially on the rain, just how close the system eventually gets. This current model keeps most of the very heavy rain just offshore. Youre looking at areas where 6 to 8 inches of rain but that stays offshore. Onshore, perhaps 3 to 4 inches of rain but very little movement, we would be talking about flash flooding in some the regions. Yes, this is a little bit on the early side as we know, atlantic Hurricane Season begins on june 1st. Its a little early this year and thats possibly partially because we are expecting above average season. We could be talking about a whole lot of this in the months to come, jon. A good reminder out there that Hurricane Season is just about to get underway. Jon good reminder indeed. Adam klotz, thank you. A devastating scene in downtown los angeles, a hash Oil Manufacturer exploding yesterday evening, sending massive balls of flames through the air and prompting a may daddies trees ds call.
