Latest demonstrations all across the country. But we begin with Mark Meredith reporting live from the white house. Mark. Good evening jon President Trump is spending weekend here in washington. Hes not made any on camera comments today but weve been watching twitter to see reaction to protest happening not far from outside white house gates. Security all around the white house has been beefed up over last week weve seen new fencing installed all around the white house complex. Lafayette park remain closed to public and there are road blocks as i mention the president , though, does not appear to be impressed with d. C. Response, he tweeted last night, quote, mayor bowser d. C. Mayor grossly incompetent and no way qualified to be running an important city like washington. The great men and women of the National Guard didnt step forward, she would have looked no better than counterparts mayor in indianapolis. Now mayor bowser criticizing President Trump accusing him of hiding behind the white house fence. Now bowser herself is under fire for city support of the massive mural on 16th street that sells out the words black lives matter. The black lives matter twitter account tweeted on friday, quote, this is a distraction from real policy changes an bowser on wrong side of history. Bowser rename plaza right outside of Lafayette Park yesterday black lives matter. Shes also asking for President Trump to withdraw extra Law Enforcement thats around city. Weve seen fbi dea agents helping city with security. Also i want to mention in meantime Vice President is defending President Trump response to what we seen this last week or so. As several lawmakers even former defense secretary james mattis criticized president over his visit that earlier in the week to st. Johns church right across from the white house. I havent spoken to general mattis. But i can tell you hes wrong. But this president has done in recent days is what every american expects to do in times of crisis that is put the lives, the property, and liberty of every american first. More of that interview will be airing it tonight right here on fox news. President trump does not have any Public Events on his schedule for tomorrow. Jon well keep watching that twitter account to see new reaction to protests. Jon. Jon Mark Meredith at white house. Mark, thank you. Well the nations capitol is brace for what could be a protest yet since the death of george floyd and crowd is swelling by the hour. Lucas tomlinson is is at Lafayette Square with the latest. Lucas. Reporter jon, with the protest at the square has been peaceful and very vocal as thousands have desended here in front of st. Johns church where it wasnt so peaceful in nursery at the church and destroyed defense secretary mark ordered all active Duty Military Police outside d. C. To return home to fort bragg and fort drum. Also ordered all 5,000 National Guard troops in the nation cap to disarm roughly same number u. S. Troops deployed to iraq right now so far not seen a large police or military presence and guard troops weve seen few block away from here were not wearing helmet sunglasses or face coverings much more relaxed atmosphere clearly more relaxed social distancing as you can see with the protesters gathered here. Nationwide over 40,000 National Guard troops have been mobilized to that number as doubled in past four days Army Secretary ryan organize ordered use to med van helicopter to disperse crowd of protesters earlier this week and critics say using an ambulance to clear out crowd and pilots have grounded as you mention jon thousands continue to pour into Lafayette Square this appears to be rallying point for protest d. C. Bowser wngt to protest to remain peaceful let them know they stay that way. Jon. Jon all right Lucas Tomlinson there in Lafayette Park. Lucas, thank you. More demonstrations in minneapolis and st. Paul as crowds gatt or at make shift memorial site where george floyd died nearly two week ago. The twin cities where the unrest began calming significantly in recent days. Mike tobin is live in minneapolis now. Mike. Hey theres been significant change in the twin cities but one thing you can see around me theres a tremendous desire to get out to march, and demonstrate. Some of that change has been a discussion about disbanding the the police force and that goes up to highest level since City Government having that discussion. City Council Voted to ban choke hold requiring police to report if they see Excessive Force and a clause where a Police Officer who does not report witnessing Excessive Force he himself would be with up for disciplinary action. Theres a new requirement that if nonleets force is abused things like tear gas, things like rub per bullets like flash bags if they were used it requires approval of the chief before any of that stuff has deployed. But still we talked to demonstrators in twin cities area they say it is not enough. There needs to be more to get down to the legislature. We need policy change that the legislative level. We need policy changes within education and within Human Services and health programs. We need changes with how funding reaches our community there are a lot of changes that node to be made. When this type of stuff stops and when we dont have to be out here because of this, when people when everybody feels independent and free equally and feel like all of their riewghts are being done equally then we can have that conversation. But right now it is not enough. We wouldnt be here if it was. This is second such demonstration and number this have particular demonstration Downtown Minneapolis is in thousands theres no end in sight to this when i asked demonstrators when theyll lead streets they say when they feel it is time to leave streets. Jon. Mike. Tobin, mike, thank you. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is calling on city prosecutors to crack down on looters, as demonstration once again fill the streets of new york city. Ahead of the atm curfew jackie is live in brooklyn. Jackie. Well jon were at the Barclays Center with a large group the gaitered here one of ab dozen groups weve seen today making their way around the city across bridges, that seem to be somewhat loosely organizeed as they pop up in pockets and march for a while. You can see behind me this crowd has been out here for a little while getting bigger as folks come in. Curfew is in two hours here and most scuffles around the city have been around the time of can curfew as police try to clear streets and now there are folks who are pushing for city officialses to lift that curfew saying that it makes cause for unnecessary interactions between protesters and employees seen about 2500 arrests since the beginning of all of the these demonstrations week ago. But as of right now that curfew is in two hours people are out here still protesting strong. District attorneys in manhattan brooklyn and the bronx say theyre not going to prosecute prosecutors arrested for low level offenses in attempt to reduce unnecessary interactions with the criminal justice system. But andrew cuomo, governor said loot terse will be absolutely prosecuted. District attorneys dont have the right to gauge political wins and do what is politic. They have to do what is legal. And the looting that happened in new york city was reprehensible web and frightening. Meantime npgd commissioner dermot shea condemn killing of george floyd crack down on two instances of officer misconduct also yesterday with phrasing protesters who alerted police to unusual activity that led to arrest of two men from ohio who they say planned to insight violence. He tweeted when pro testers spotted something not right, the demonstration they call to leave results two men arrested, gasoline knives and machete, two way radios recovered and live all thanks to community and cops working together. Police are trying to determine if those men took part in any demonstration or orchestrated any attack on Police Officers. Now, also nbc news is reporting the suspect in wednesdays officer stabbing was recorded on a Police Body Camera, as saying three times during that distinct and a the fbi is investigating it as a possible terrorist attack. Thats according to the wall street journal, however, the nypd is also cautioning against signing any ideology at this point saying theyve had conflicting signals in this persons online activity. So cautioning again top sign any ideology but they say theyre looking into this charge with attempted murder of a Police Officer. And for most part today demonstrations have been peaceful although earlier today we interviewed someone who suggested that violence might come to the diamond district. With gasoline, if people didnt get what they wanted they said this is the person said this is a chance for city and state leaders to listen to the demands that are being made, and made apparent threat that if they dont get what they want things could resume and see more violence again, however, the most part by and large everyone is proud had been denouncing the actions of looters and violent folk across the city, and wanting to just demonstrate to have the right to gather to have their message heard done. All right jackie, live if from brooklyn new york, jackie, thank you. Also in new york two Buffalo Police pleading guilty not guilty i should say to Assault Charges filed after this video showing them shoving an elderly protester thursday leaving him bleeding from his head on the sidewalk in front of city hall. That protester reportedly in serious condition. Those two officer a it is Robert Mccabe and aaron have been suspended without pay. All 57 members of Buffalo Emergency Response Team have resigned from operation to protest those suspensions and are returning to other assignments. Protests continue in another major midwestern city thousands are marching in chicago today to demand justice for george floyd as well as be on a taylor and a tony other africanamericans killed but Law Enforcement. Chicago march supports black lives matter. Calling for an end to Police Brutality and the funding of the Chicago Police department. In chicago with the latest. Brady. Jon, this was a very well organized march with a specific start time and specific spend time earlier this afternoon, this field was filled with thousands of people and at the peak of this protest organizers estimate 30,000 people participated in it and there were no arrests and they were not marching downtown they were marching in the west loop outside of the city center and thats because downtown is essentially on lockdown right now. Highway exits are blocked as are main arteries into the city and Public Transit is blocked theres still is a 9 p. M. Curfew in effect. This protest remain peaceful the entire time as police marched along side they didnt insight and neither did protest but as this peaceful protest was going on, Chicago Police tweeted this, a picture of buckets that they found in another part of town earlier this morning filled with bricks and rocks and other projectiles that presumably looters might have used or were planning to use to bash in windows and buildings in the neighborhood of the south loop which is in the downtown area of chicago. Back here live, i mentioned that police were lining and marching alongside protesters, to keep them safe web and they werent inciting anything but i will tell you one thing that struck me jon is one of the Police Officers even as these protesters were protesting the very department that he work for in his very profession he said im very impressed with this younger generation. Jon. All right graddy, graddy, thank you. So protesters are calling to Defund Police departments all across the country. With some protest becoming violent how are Law Enforcement groups handling the challenges of the fast couple of week. Lets bring in the police chief city of detroit james craig, chief craig, your office has won cue doges for handling of the protest there youve had some trouble. But not like other cities. Why do you thinks that . So many things i can point to the miment of the Police Department are just some of the best of the best and very proud of the work theyve done. Also our community, detroit is a unique place to sense that they dont welcome outsideers coming into the city, and we cant create violence and destroy property. This city has been through a lot jon. , i mean, when you look at the bankruptcy, and more recent times, so no. Not at all. Theyre not going to stand for it and ting thats really had an impact on really on the outside. Okay. Lets talk about finances, bankruptcy, and police budgets. There are people all over the country qhor saying Defund Police departments. Cut hundreds of millions of dollars from some Police Department budgets. That will show the police a thing orp two. How do you respond to that . You know its hard to put to words ill say it simply as this knee jerk reaction not well thought out and frankly this one shot fits all. It is just misguided. You know, i have a chance this afternoon as the officers were preparing to go out on frontline to manage protest here in detroit this afternoon, and we had a conversation and one of the things expressed told for is this defunding notion. Keep in mind as i indicated, this is a city that went through bankruptcy. But i have to point now seven years ago, the Police Officers had 10 taken from their pay. Work long hours, and so when you talk about Police Morale it was at the very bottom. So defunding why . Now, were talking about detroit. I cant, you know, i was in l. A. For many years pep and i know that mayor made a conscience decision to move fund around and i saw an interesting video with lapd officers and a counsel woman. These officers making this city safe and when you look at buy and large how Police Officers across this country have handled protest, just phenomenal. It has been a difficult ought days for many but i am. I have to tell you jon im so proud of the men and women of this Police Department. Well and with good reason. I mean, your department has handled things very well or so it would seem from, you know, the way things have gone there in detroit. You couldnt pay me enough to be a Police Officer especially when you see some of the abuse that is hurled at the officers. Projectiles, hurled at officers all, you know, spitting that kind of thing. And yet people are talking about defunding police. Doesnt that just mean you know, less money, less money available to pay officers doesnt that mean youre going to get worse kinds of officers less kinds of applicants . Of course. But heres the next level in sanity. This mantle Police Department recognized that one size doesnt fit all. You know many of the major cities have been under a federal oversight, many have adopted best policing practices, an thats not to say that some of them still need a reform. But to talk about dismantling what do you replace it with individual that wear sports coats to guns maybe a flashlight . I mean, the business that were in is very serious an you hold the chief accountable to make sure policing is right for the community and that we have an open dialogue continuously with community is not talking at the community but talking request the community. Those are the things that work and talk when you talk about Building Trust that defunding and dismantling knee jerk just a couple of short weeks ago seems like forever. You know, covid was the big headline. And police were forced to crack down on even minor infractions of people not Wearing Masks in public that kind of thing now to my understanding youve been diagnosed with covid. So you know this issue very well what do you think about all of these protests going on and you know people out there not Wearing Masks and politicians like your governor marching side by side. You know with protesters breaking the the very protocols that the insisted were necessary. J well i have to tell you jon i listened to your last seg amount doctor talking about, you know,e concerns known to contracting deadly disease and certainly of the survivor, i can appreciate the safety. But you know, outside wearing the mask, keeping your hands clean to two major sets one can take in protection, but you know i dont to get into what the politicianings did its not for me to say. Let me just be clear, my officers are up close and personal with protesters each and every day. And so its no secret detroit was a hot bed, in fact, at one point i had 650 Police Officers quarantined. But to date 323 of us tested positive for covid. And, of course, we have two that we lost as a result of deadly disease. So i have a great appreciation for the
