FOXNEWSW On The Record With Greta Van Susteren April 19, 2016 23:00:00

The big number, 1237 on the republican side. We will map that out for you tomorrow. Thanks for inviting us into your home tomorrow. Thats it for this special report, fair, balanced and unafraid. Greta is in times square right now tonight on the record bright lights, it is times square. And we are just under two hours until the polls close across new york state. We are coming to you live from times square. On the record is kicking off a spectacular night of New York Primary coverage and we are in the heart of new york city, the crossroads of the world where the past few weeks has all led up to tonight. It is so great to be back in new york. Its so great. It is great to bt back. Thank you. When i ran for senate, the people of new york took a chance on me. This next election is going to focus on three critical issues, jobs, freedom, and security. And frankly here in new york im only 5 points down to hillary so we could have a lot of fun getting it right up here. Tuesday is a big, big primary because we want to send a message that new york wants the kind of future that is going to be positive. I believe were going to win here in new york. I think were going to be in very good shape. I believe i will be the nominee. We love new york. This is just an amazing place. All across america. All across new york, people are waking up and help is on the way. And the on the record Political Panel is here with us here in times square. From the daily beast Jackie Kucinich and abc news political director rick klein. Rick, less than two hours the polls close across the state. Not just here in new york city. Big surprises tonight . Crossroads of the world as you say new york and also potential turning point in the race, both frontrunners call this state home. Right . Hillary clinton and donald trump. Both come in with losing streaks. And they need to turn that around. If this is going to be a contest, this is a place that they can essentially end it, in terms of someone catching them. Donald trump gets himself back on track with a big win. Gets himself in a position to take a majority of delegates. Hillary clinton can all but end Bernie Sanders bid. Big stakes going on right here in new york. Jackie, is it just to win and do they have to win big . And what is winning big and whats a loss for them . They are going to say a win is a win. Trump wants to win all the bananas. He wants to win all the delegates here. Its looking good for donald trump. He has got to crest 50 not only statewide but in each of the Congressional Districts. Its looking gadd. Now for Hillary Clinton its a little bit different. She is poised to beat Bernie Sanders. However, double digits would be cat tore categorized. I was at her Campaign Headquarters today. They definitely were selling expectations a little bit. What is a win for Bernie Sanders here tonight . Well, he needs to not just win but win big to start to up delegates. You dont expect that. No, i dont. A narrow victory or keeping it close he can march on. I think he has earned the right to go to the end of this process the right to fight for every delegate until the end if he wants to catch Hillary Clinton in terms of delegates he needs to win states like this. Geography matters in this race. Its not just about momentum and winning a bunch of small contests. You have to win in big places. Make no doubt about it he spent millions of dollars more than Hillary Clinton and expected to win the state. He said on television he would win this state. Anything less than that is going to be a disappointment for him. Donald trump will have a speech tonight we understand. At least we are expecting he will be. Yes. He is having a press conference. You have to imagine its going to be a big celebration. Huge is what he would say. Huge. Huge celebration over there at trump tower. Bernie sanders is not here tonight. On to pennsylvania as all the candidates that dont expect to win. What an extraordinary moment for trump. Off these couple of weeks to come out of a victory despite the Campaign Turmoil and put himself on track again for the nomination would be a big boost out of new york state. Go ahead. I was going to say its looking good for him down the line to on april 26th. Look like going to do well in the northeast. Governor kasich, whats a win for him tonight . He is not going to come in first. Coming in second. I dont know its a win. He needs a reason to stay in this race. If he manages to even sort of get near trump, that will be good for john kasich. Where is senator ted cruz tonight . He is not here. No. He is in pennsylvania as well. Potential to come in third here. That would be a blow to his argument that he is the antitrump even though kasich has picked up zero delegates in the past month. Still behind rubio in the delegate trump. Cruz needs to say i am the guy to beat him. If he were to get that done despite the new york values controversy. That would make a big statement. Rick and jackie, thank you both. Just a short time ago donald trump and wife melania cast their votes in new york city. We think we know who they voted for. Trump is hoping to turn his home advantage into a commanding win. Can he do it . On the record Live Team Coverage from trumps fifth avenue home. We begin with carl cameron live at trump tower. Carl . Corner of 5th and 57th. Touch tower is ground zero for the republican race tonight. Donald trump has already gotten the equivalent of concession rhetoric out of both john kasich and ted cruz who have said that they understand that trump has been leading in the polls and he is expected to win here. Donald trump will hold a news conference. There will be some friends and family in the audience. Right there in the foyer with the iconic elevator that he rides down when he first made his announcement, now almost more than a year ago, and he does expect to win. The question is whether or not he can get up to their target goal of about 80 to 85 delegates of the 95 dels that are actually up for grabs. The nature of the way in which the matter. Any candidate gets 50 statewide will immediately get all of 14 delegates at large delegates. That leaves 81 others that are all allocated based on Congressional Districts. Three delegates per the 27 Congressional Districts. And if a candidate gets 50 of each Congressional District, he gets all three of those delegates. If he if a candidate who wins with a plurality fails to reach 50 , they get divvied up. Thats where cruz and kasich could shorten some of trumps numbers tonight. Trump knows that if he wants to clinch the nomination before the convention in cleveland in july, a very, very big margin of victory here in new york is necessary. This is really the second to the last big state with the big, big delegate purses. California goes last on june 7th, trump knows he has to pull off a big victory here in new york. ;jjeauau ation of the cruz and kasich campaigns assessment of their own chances, john kasich was in maryland today in ocean city campaigning and ted cruz is in philadelphia campaigning. Two states that vote next tuesday when the atlantic states, five of them all tolled have their primaried. This is a potential for trump to have a very big night tonight and next week. It would be six potential big wins in a row which could slow ted cruz and john kasichs ability to stop him from clinching the nomination on the first ballot or even before the convention itself. Trump campaign is very excited tonight. They think this is going to be a huge momentum builder for him and hell be on stage sometime around 9 00 tonight, greta. Carl, thank you. And foxs Rick Leventhal is also outside of trump tower but rick is in the middle of antitrump protests. Rick . Well, greta, the nypd is prepared for antitrump protests but so far there havent been any that materialized here on fifth avenue. We will give you a look at the outside of trump tower encased in gold here on fifth avenue between 56th and 57th streets. There are certainly plenty of members of the press here on fifth avenue. You can take a look down the street. Local and national and international press, including fuji tv right next to us here. Take a walk down the street to show you whats happening on fifth. We have a lot of tourists stopping by to take a look at trump tower. And a lot of barricades which the nypd has been setting up here on a regular basis to ensure that if there is any trouble they are ready and prepared for it we do have plenty of officers here on the street and the cross streets in on fifth. But, again, right now, greta, we are kind of surprised that there have not been any organized protests here outside of trump tower. Even though the candidate is inside. Of course, last week, there were organized protests in manhattan. And there were several hundred people outside of Grand Central station. Outside of the republican fundraiser where donald trump was speaking along with the other candidates. But, again here tonight, what we have, greta, is a lot of cameras. A lot of media, and a lot of tourists, and some locals as well walking up and down fifth avenue. So far no signs of any trouble here. Well, rick, you should see it here in times square, its pretty exciting here. Can i just imagine as the numbers roll in that there is going to be a lot of activity with all the satellite trucks at trump tower. 9 00 is when he is expect to do speak, right, rick . I believe so. We will be out here to keep an eye on things for you. Rick, thank you. Well, its a battle for new york. But whats at stake . And why is the big apple such a big deal. New york is home to a whopping 95 republican delegates. 14 are at large delegates who go to the candidate who wins a majority in the statewide primary. And the 81 others . They are chosen by voters in new yorks 27 Congressional Districts. And that according to new yorks primary gets a little complicated. The actual delegates will be selected in may at meetings of the state Committee Members from eachCongressional District. And they will meet and elect the actual people who will serve as delegates in cleveland. And then they will be awarded to the president ial candidate. Here is how it works. Every Congressional District gets three delegates. If a candidate wins more than 50 of the vote in that district, he wins all three delegates. But what if no one gets a majority . Well, that is even more complicated. The person with the most votes but not a majority, gets two delegates. And the runnerup gets one delegate, as long as he gets more than 20 of the vote. And thats a really big deal. It means registered republicans in districts without Many Republican voters will have a huge influence on todays primary. Take a look at new yorks 15th Congressional District. Its entirely inside the heavily democratic bronx where very few people are registered republicans. Similar in the 2012 election had just 285 votes cast in the republican primary to. Win all three delegates, a candidate needs just a few hundred votes. And thats why a lot of republicans have been spending time in places, well, that arent so republican. Im thrilled to be here. [shouting] and tonight donald trump expecting a big victory. But how can he win big . Its not easy. Statewide polls show him with a huge lead, but trump still needs to win majorities in districts of very few republicans and in places like brooklyn and the bronx where the other candidates have been campaigning hard. So are the rules unfair . Cohost of the five and my very good friend Kimberly Guilfoyle is here to go on the record. Nice to see you, kimberly. So great to be here, greta. I like your setup. Isnt it beautiful. Phenomenal. Times square, wildest place probably on the planet. For sure. Donald trump has said some of the rules are unfair. Is he right . So, listen, he has had a little bit of an issue with the rnc. The people he would need to take issue with are the state Party Officials because they make their own rules in terms of how you can cast the delegates. So you would have to go state by state. Find the rules. Understand how the process works. On the flip side when you see ted cruz, his people have been in the field and on the case for about a year. Being able to establish offices and after a primary would finish or a caucus, he left people in the state toe too some have said that cruz has got a ground game that rivals president Barack Obamas that he had that was very strategic in 2008. That will be a big factor Going Forward for whoever the nominee is in the general election. You know, we will see what happens in cleveland. Thats when i think donald trump will have a strong case to make if he is deprived of the nomination and he has the most delegates. All right. So if the states are the ones who come up with their individual rules, any sort of swipes at the rnc and Reince Priebus might not be fair. Unless he thinks that ryans can actually have some untoward influence with the state Party Officials. I think is he bringing up a great point which is you would like to seat process be more specific and more uniform than arbitrary, depending on where the states are because it does make for some confusion and you can kind of pick off delegates and votes after the fact. So i hear what he is saying. The larger issue is speaks to the issue of disenfranchisement. You want peoples votes to be able to count. So when you have kind of a convention process within a state to be able to eelect the delegates thats a bit of an issue where its not necessarily uniform and other states have a more fair, as he sees it, and just system. You say doesnt want everybody who votes to be disenfranchised. One place you can poll in new york didnt open on time because the worker didnt show up that has the keys. You hear about problems like that. Out of that i didnt care markers or somebody didnt get their blends in time to open up the place. You hate to hear that what i dont like is when people are turned away and not able to cast their vote. We want people to be engaged in political process. Trump has a good point. He has brought a lot of people out that hasnt participated before enthusiastic about his campaign. He, of course, wants their votes to be counted. Were less than two hours away from the polls closing here in new york state. You are now a new yorker. I want to at least focus ahead the next big state will be california or next big state you are from california. How important will that one be . California is a big one. I think ultimately it is going to be the state that determines who the nominee is and whether or not donald trump is able to get it. If he does extremely well in california, then he is going to be in a good advantage. Cruz is working very hard there, so he is going to have to have the right team in place. You have seen him make some changes within his Campaign Structure to be able to move towards that end. California is tough. I campaigned there myself. As former first lady of san francisco. You have really got to get out there. There was strategy about it that i was talking to he had rowlings about it earlier. Kimberly guilfoyle of the five i hope you come back. Fantastic, greta. Brand new data in to fox news anchor of americas newsroom another good friend of myanmar that maccallum is standing by. Martha. Hello, greta. Good evening to you. When you look at the exit polls the headline once again is that g. O. P. Voters are getting out there today to go to the voting booth and cast their ballot because they are overwhelmingly angry with the job that the federal government is doing. About 8 in 10 new york republicans say they are either angry or dissatisfied with the federal government. What quality are those voters looking for in this candidate . There are really three, number one can bring change, 35 . Shares my values 28 . Tells it like it is, 26 . Weve seen those get tugged back and forth between ted cruz. Numbers still coming in to figure out who is winning that one. Fascinating that nobody seems to care who will actually be able to win in november. Only 8 say thats their most important thing. What about the hot topics thats on their mind when they come out of the booths and answer the questions. The convention is a big issue. Okay. You guys were just talking about this. 72 of new york g. O. P. Ers think that if one candidate does not get to 1237 in cleveland that the party should nominate the candidate who has accumulated the most votes over the course of this primary process. Only a quarter of the voters tonight say that they think its okay to let the delegates go to the convention and then decide this on subsequent ballots. They want the person with the most votes through this process to be their nominee. Very significant here tonight go over and take a look at the democrats and see what they are thinking. Whats most pressing this evening as they pick between sanders and clinton. 35 say the economy and jobs. Very pressing in the upstate area for new york as well. Surprisingly, in this state that has suffered so much, on 9 11 and its aftermath, only 14 of democrats say that they are very concerned about terrorism and with those voters, Hillary Clinton does win with that group thats concerned about terrorism. So, whats the most important quality for democrat nominee . Not an outsider like the g. O. P. , they want somebody who has, quote, the right experience. Clinton wins with this group. Bernie, once again, takes honest and trustworthy look at this too with the democrats only 11 say its really important to them to pick somebody who can actually win in november, greta. We have got to keep in mind in upstate new york, they dont even open the polls until noon. So exit polls are really going to be drawn from people going to work, then voting, and registering those exit polls as they come out. We will get a lot more numbers as we go throughout the evening, greta. Martha, thank you. You bet. Less than two hours from the polls closing. Very exciting here in new york. Likewise on the democratic s
