More on this story from the white house. They say that Mick Mulvaney and Vice President pence went over to capitol hill and gave Chuck Schumer a counter offer and they did not hear anything until last night when they heard democrats were not going to make another counter offer. Last night the white house said that is what democrats told them but the incoming acting chief of staff claims that democrats have simply shut down the discussion. The administrations offer is roughly 2. 5 billion of Border Security and a new wall or new fencing. We made that clear to the democrats that we are not going to negotiate in the press but the president has been willing to negotiate on this plan. The democrats have not been willing to do anything and thats the sad part. They care more about keeping our borders open then keeping our government open. President trump tweeting we will be forced to close the southern border entirely if the obstructionist democrats do not give us the funding to build the wall. If the threat to close the southern border is serious and asked why it would be worth the potential had to the economy, he said that all options are on the table. As for the democrats, a spokesperson for nancy pelosi said the democrats have offered republicans three options to reopen the government and they will only include funding for a strong, sensible Border Security but not the wall which they described as immoral, ineffective, and expensive. Democrats have not been invited to the white house for discussion of late, the white house says they gave democrats an offer on the way negotiations go as democrats need to come back with another offer. They say they know where they are and right now its up to the democrats to come to the table. Julie . Julie thank you very much. We are joined by our first guest, peter king who sits on the House Homeland Security committee. Thanks for talking for us, good to see you. Where do shutdown negotiations stand now . It sounds like there are not any negotiations until january. It seems like every thing is at a stalemate, House Democrats are in a bit of a bind. I dont think nancy pelosi wants to put any offer on the table until after she is elected speaker so thats holding her back and to be honest with you my position is i strongly support a border wall. I was one of the offers of the bill back in 2006. I was not supporting a government shutdown. The reality is we have the shutdown and i think its incumbent on both sides to get this resolved. I think the democrats should come back with their own offer, theres room for negotiation. The president is willing to come down on the dollar amount. If daca is on the table, lets do that. This might be a chance to get some issues resolved and set a good tone going into the new congress. But right now the democrats are being hypocritical. I remember back in 2006 and even in 2013, the democrats did support a wall, they did see the necessity of it and the Border Patrol agents ive spoken to, the wall is essential. Now that the government to shut down, lets try to get it resolved and come up with a solution we can go forward from. Julie what do you make of secretary nielsens border visit . The democrats also want hearings to investigate the recent deaths of two children who were Illegal Immigrants who had crossed the border. Obviously those deaths are tragic, certainly any any time kids die its terrible but there is no evidence that i. C. E. Did anything wrong here, they did bring the child to the hospital, given medication and when the child became sick again they brought him to the hospital almost immediately. I think anytime you have conditions like this are people are coming up, many of whom are in bad health to begin with, they are living in terrible conditions, this can happen. I know in new york city in housing projects you hear of kids dying, that can happen when people are living in those conditions. I applaud the secretary for going to see if theres anything more that can be done but i think its wrong to be blaming i. C. E. , theyve had hundreds of thousands of people that they had custody of over the years and i think these are the only two children that have died in recent memory. Considering what does happen in housing projects across the country, i think i. C. E. Has an excellent record and id be reluctant to be doing any piling on here right now to make political points with this. Julie you are correct, i think a lot of people wanted to point the blame at somebody and they were very quick to blame government officials or Border Patrol agents for this death and we learned today after several reports revealed that the father, who fled from guatemala, he did not in fact according to his family members flee guatemala to seek asylum, that he in fact that he had a better chance of getting in if he brought his son so he used his son as a tool in order to come into our country illegally and unfortunately his son was not only sick but at one point he actually refused medical assistance for his son who later died after doctors tried to save his life. That to me, people should keep that in mind. Julie is secretary nielsen right and is it time for enhanced Border Security . The answer is yes in both counts, the numbers have gone up dramatically, Border Patrol, they are not equipped, our facilities are not equipped. Originally they were built assuming it will be primarily adult males in this facility. Now you have men, women, children, often with their health issues, maybe some disease, they come from very impoverished areas, thats the reality. To have this many people coming across the border, trying to listen to their asylum claims, try to catch those seeking across the border, all of this putting a tremendous burden and yes it does show absolutely the need we have to build strong Border Security and that does include all wall. Julie what did you make about the president s threats to democrats, that he will and he quotes close the southern border entirely and cut aid to Central American countries and pull back on trade with mexico, what did you make of his idea there . Any time we cut back on trade it creates Economic Issues but it is most important to protect our National Security and protect our sovereignty. End of the president does believe he has to at least temporarily close the border i believe that is within his prerogative as commander in chief. Id rather see that than the government shutdown. We have to secure the border, whatever the president feels is necessary, we should do it and they should drive home to everyone the importance of working out the agreement after the democrats realize that every other point they think theyre making is wrong to say that the border is not needed a border wall is not needed because it is and they should acknowledge that and go forward and i think we can do things constructively in that case. First, i want your instant reaction to a congressman peter king just now, do you take any issue with what he said and do you agree with anything he said . I agree that we need Border Security, democrats along with republicans in a bipartisan way approved 1. 7 billion in the last two years to enhance Border Security, fencing, additional personnel, et cetera. The department of Homeland Security has spent just a fraction of that. So this notion that democrats dont support Border Security is a silly claim. We just think it should be done in a smart, costeffective way using new technologies, using drones and satellites, lets do things that will actually secure the border. That was the proposal, there were three proposals put forth to the president but he made it very clear he wanted to shut the government down, he said it 25 times, we need of Good Government shutdown. Even though there was agreement 100 one, the whole senate unanimously, it wouldve been approved by the house by the president at the last minute changed his mind and said no and i think its because he wants a fight about this because he wants to distract from the other very bad things that have happened the last two weeks. He lost his defense secretary in a very serious rebuke of his foreign policy, the Trump Foundation was closed because of persistent illegalities, he the stock market has been very volatile, the walls are closing in with the mueller investigation. I think the president has decided to shut down will distract from all of that and hes right. Julie i think the president wants to continue to fulfill promises. This president has done that, hes made promises that he wants to keep and this was his promis promise. This isnt necessarily meant to distract, this is something no. The reality is his chief of staff, general kelly himself said, his incoming chief of staff, both said, a border wall will not solve the problem. That it is a simple solution, a 19th century solution for a 21st century problem. Both of his chief of staff has e acknowledged that. Inspect cargo, things that will actually secure the border, but he doesnt want to do that. He wants to shut down because he wants of fight and what he doesnt realize is there are over 800,000 federal employees whose lives have been adversely impacted, some devastated because of the shutdown. It hurts real people. Julie i hear you on the fact that you believe all wall wouldnt work, ive said repeatedly that realistically, logistically it seems almost impossible for a wall ever to happen. Not only for money reasons but imminent domain and the list goes on and on. But as far as whether or not a wall would work, that seems to be the most divisive argument between republicans and democrats because many would say of course all wall would work. If you have a huge structure standing before you, how do you lift your child over that or your wife . I dont know how that would work out. Border patrol agents on the ground, im not there, you are not there, Border Patrol agents on the ground sale wall would work. What you say to those at the border day in and day out . There have been a lot of National Security and Border Security experts that have said the wall will not work because people go over a wall, under a wall, there are places you cant build all wall. Julie i can barely scale a 4foot fence. You may not be fleeing for your life. There are lots of places a wall would not work, why not use things that will work . If there are places you have to have borders, theres fencing, places you need additional personnel, use drones, satellites, do things that will actually secure the border. Weve appropriated almost 1. 7 billion, the department spends a 6 of it. The real issue is the fight and the reality is democrats and republicans both, i presume, want to secure our borders in a responsible way. Lets use the advancements in technology to solve the problem. Julie when you do realize that this isnt the only president and it doesnt have to be a republican that has wanted a wall. Hillary clinton at one point i dont know that theres been another president that wanted a 70,000,000,000. 1000mile wall. Its a ludicrous idea, it will not work, its too expensive and its not effective. Lets use things that are costeffective and will achieve the objective. Julie all im saying is back in the day Hillary Clinton wanted i wouldnt support it if Hillary Clinton wanted it. Julie it didnt get as much attention because it was a democrat that wanted it. Trump being in office, probably the most hated president ever by democrats. Its a bad idea. It was ever idea it is, its a bad idea. Forget about President Trump, its a dumb idea. There are tunnels and all kinds of problems with the border in israel, i wouldnt use that as an example. There is an easy solution here, if we had a president who is interested in reopening the government. The good news is when democrats take control we will move swiftly to open the government and solve this problem once and for all. Julie what do you think of the president street this morning about how he basically threatens democrats that if they dont agree to his demands to fund all wall on the southern border, that he will close the southern border entirely in addition and cut into Central American countries which as you know the u. S. Was promised to aid Central America some 10 billion. They will take asylumseekers and hold them instead of the u. S. Taking on that burden which was a positive move and now the president is threatening to pull back on trade. He talked about the importance of Border Security but also the importance of making sure we are helping countries address the conditions leading to this migration. So the idea of cutting off aids to countries in their attempts to stabilize would make things worse. Julie countries from honduras and guatemala, if they arent trying to stop the caravans, why should they get our money . If someone comes to the u. S. Border seeking asylum, we have laws about that, standards that ares set and statutes, to determine if they are entitledo asylum. People should not be as alarmed as it seems, the numbers obviously are normal for there to be a correction. If you have your 401 k and youre numbers dip, is it best to just not look at those numbers and not touch it . Especially someone with a long time horizon, it will be fine in 30 years time. If youre retiring next month or the next six months, maybe theres a bit of a jitter, a bit of worry about in the end, this is a Natural Market correction wherein. I would just like to say its better to look at the glass half full. I think a lot of people are overreacting and a lot of investors and a lot of Financial Experts are saying look, this isnt a time to freak out, look at it on the plus side, this is a discount market. And i love a good sale. You do love a good sale. Right now, things are looking cheap, in november they were looking more expensive than they are today. We are in the longterm average, things are not expensive, things are not cheap at this point, take a look at it from price to equity, thats a financial term we use and things are looking almost at a bargain at this point. But look, as i mentioned, keep things in perspective, longest bull market run in history, we are there you are. We are very positive in that regard.
