FOXNEWSW Shepard Smith Reporting January 11, 2018

Yesterday, i guess, a group of House Republicans put out a plan to deal with kak da and do things not daca but not under the umbrella. Was that helpful, not helpful to getting to a deal ultimately, the president wish that they, you know, take that off the table so that you can focus on what might be happening with senator flake or others in the senate . Secretary sanders this is a great starting point, a great place even though it went beyond the parameters that the president very specifically and then you later shannon he outlined the things he felt he had to be included, not just what could be included. This is a good starting point. Part negotiation process. If we can get everything done, thats better than getion part of it done. Were okay with getting a deal done as long as it falls into the parameters the president laid out. He understands adding the extra things are what makes whats that the potential to make it more difficult, various constituencies think of those things as poison pills secretary sanders thats why its called negotiation, everybody puts everything on the table they want. You figure out what you arent willing to give up, you try come out with everybody winning. Thats what we hope to do both republicans, democrats, the house and the senate. We have laid out the nonnegotiateables for us, and move forward in the process. Do you think you can do that by the next week or so . Or do you secretary sanders i wont put a time frame on it but we hope to get it done. The priority is getting it done and getting it done right. April . Secretary mnuchin said that this white house has been working with businesses as it relates to the tax plan. When it comes to walmart, has this white house been talking to walmart about a safety net for the employees that were going to lose their jobs . Look act a sign right now, on sams club that, says this club will be closed on january 11, 018, thats today, the day that secretary mnuchin talks about how wonderful, there will be increases in pay for walmart workers. Secretary sanders im not aware of a conversation about a specific safety net. Can i tell you, that were excited about the fact that they raised minimum wage, they have increased opportunities when it comes to paid family leave. Nd they are increasing salaries over a million American Workers that,s a positive. In terms of specifics on a safety net, i couldnt sfoek that. There were reports, i understand, that ryan and oconnell are not together on issues relating gram grags. Secretary sanders were having conversations about it, it is important policy to look at. Right now, our focus primarily is on the budget. And secondary is getting the deal done, in regards to immigration, on daca, Border Security. Most likely, moving on to infrastructure from there. John . Yes, thank you, sarah. Two questions. The president said yesterday, and i quote, we are going to take a strong look at the libel laws. Now, many lawyers said that was an unusual statement because all libel laws are at the state leferl and not the federal level. Was he referring to states should take a look at libel laws or Something Else . Secretary sanders 1er9ly states should look at it. The president is frustrated with the misreporting and fake news that is regularly taking place. He is tired of the medias obsession over recent fictitious book on the president and hiS Administration. He thinks that when things like that happen there should be some action of recourse. He simply is stating it should be looked into. Francesca . He meant the states, not that there should be federal line laws. Secretary sanders speaking general libel laws should be looked at. The other question, is the administration, does it have any reaction to the reports of the arrest of former iranian president who was leading a pro 2esh9 against the regime . Secretary sanders at at this time. On the president s trip this morning and fisa, when he said that it may have been used to fight surveillance in the campaign, what was he talking about when he said may, abuse and surveilled. Secretary sanders this issing . Weve talked about many times before. There are a lot of things that indicate that there was surveillance at trump tower. And im not sure what the clarification is needed on that front. Two questions for you. First, a few days ago you said the white house did not have any reaction to the transcript that was released by senator feinstein relapted to fusion gps. Is the president aware of this transcript and does he have any reaction to the fbi in references to the kran script on what was said by that gentleman . Secretary sanders we think it is a gross overstep by senator feinstein to release that transcript. Theres been a lot of comments about obstruction of justice. Frankly the only people weve seen trying to influence the investigation are former director comey and democrats in congress that, includes senator feinstein, representative schiff who have selectively leaked to the media with it interviews that,s a big problem, something that should certainly be considered and looked at. Followup question, today ecuador announced its granting national to wickie likes leader julian asang. Goss the president agree or disagree . Secretary sanders i 1r7b9 spoken to him about that. I havent spoken to him about that. When the president went through the exercise in october of decertifying sanction waivers in iran, he said to the effect of fix it or he wouldnt do it again. The fix was supposed to include legislation which hasnt happened yet. Is the president comfortable with where the fixit part of this process is right now, and what is his feeling about what a fix would look like . Secretary sanders the president still strongly believes this is one of the worst deals of all time and one of the single greatest is that its restrictions leave iran free in the future to openly develop their Nuclear Program and rapidly achieve a Nuclear Weapons breakout capability. We see a big problem with that. The administration is continuing to work with congress and with our allies to address those flaws. And well keep you pointed as a decision on that front is made. Halle . I want to ask about offshore drilling. But before i do that, i want you to clarify something youve said, a lot of people were con fueled by that speech. Secretary sanders i didnt say a lot of people, audz lot of people were confused. We werent confused but some of you were. So i want to ask that. Mike pompeo was pushing for this. A lot of people in the president S Administration were representing the president s place on this, that he wanted it to pass. How are people supposed to trust, lawmakers, policy makers, that the people representing the president s position actually are . Are. I think that the premise of your question is completely ridiculous. Secretary sanders and shows the lack of knowledge that you have on this process. Ive tried several times, im do it a tenth time here. The president supports the 702 but he has some very strong concerns the fisa program more generally. This is why he put out a memo last week outlining suchnd why the dni director put out a new policy this morning. Im not sure what the confusion is. Theyre saying the president s tweet this morning was in your view not at all confusing and not at all contradictory . You think it was an accurate statement any want to be clear. Secretary sanders it wasnt confusing to me, im sorry if it was for you. Jake . The drilling ban secretary sanders sure. Whats happening in florida. There have been other states pointing to the reason the administration gave for getting florida saying theyre not they would like to be exempt. How is exempting florida from the ban anything other, in critics view, than giving a political favor to white house allies in a key Battle Ground state . Secretary sanders look, the president is a massive advocate for america not just being Energy Independent but being energy dominant, its part of the process is the offshore drilling. Thats why its opened up for public comment. These will continue to be negotiations. Well continue to look for places and ways that we can make america more energy dominant. If thats one of them, then were going to continue forward in that process. Thats why weve opened up drilling in anwar, keystone pipeline, cut a lot of jobkilling regulations that have to do with that. Well continue moving forward with that process, its an open comment period, and were talk with other stakeholders as we make decisions for they are areas in other states. Waums it a political favor . Secretary sanders im not aware of any political favor that that would have been part of. So no. Plism reform, the president commuted the sentence of a first time on finder, who had been sentenced to excessive 27 years. What kinds of unjustices has the president view as priorities . Secretary sanders the president is looking, one of the big topics of conversation for today specifically, is looking at reducing the rates of recidivism, helping reduce violent crime. This is beginning of a conversation, a listening session, and were going to continue working through the process. That was the number one topic at todays meeting. Thats the big priority he has on that front at this point. There have been reports, if can you clarify, what is mr. Kushners role in the Prison Reform initiative . Secretary sanders hes helping lead that conversation. And put stakeholders together from a number of different areas that have expertise this matter. One last question. Anita . Going back to immigration, can you just shed a little bit of light on what the holdup is . Mebls of the Republican Party were in the negotiations, they are the ones saying they agree with democrats. The administration has been in the meetings, at least some of them. What do you not like . Secretary sanders theres only one member that said there was a deal reached and the other members are well in sync on the same page that we havent quite gotten there but we feel like were close. Were going to keep having this conversation, the president had a meeting here today, with a number of members, both from the house and Senate Republicans and dem cats. Democrats as a followup discussion on immigration. Again, we feel very strongly we can get a deal made. The president talked about missing, is that the issue, or funding . Secretary sanders i think democrats agreeing to the other side of the the deal. Thats where we are. Were confident and feel like were going get there. Thanks so much, guys. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders ending what was a very active press conference. We of course will cover all of the subjects. Im Trace Gallagher in for Shepard Smith. Deal or no deal on immigration. Republican senator jeff flake of arizona says a group of lawmakers from both parties reached an agreement on a deal to protect the dreamers, daca. The hundreds of thousands of immigrants whose parents brought them on the u. S. Without documents. It appears that not everybody is on board and the white house moments ago said a deal has not been reached. President trump this week told lawmakers he would sign legislation to protect the dreamers. He said hed sign whatever Congress Gives him. Then he later added the xwil has to include the wall. Still, senator flake told reporters the president has mostly abandoned the idea of building a wall. He said its more likely that a fence will go up along some stretches of the border. Lets get to the chief Congressional Correspondent, Mike Emmanuel, live on capitol hill. Hello, mike. Hi, trace. Good afternoon. Sounds like a small group have senators has reached an agreement in principle but plenty more work to be done. Republican whip john cornyn of texas says he appreciates the contribution of of the senators but its neat going to be agreed to by a handful of people. He said he has not seen the proposal. One of the senators trying to cut a deal talked about where things stand a short time ago. In the meeting today, to set out the series. We have an agreement that were Bipartisan Group, the six of us, were shopping among our colleagues. We dont want to release details until we talk to more of our colleagues. One senator not impressed, arkansas senator tom cotton. 2013 democrats seemed so interested in Border Security. They talked about it hour, important it was, all of them voted for a bill for 700 million of Border Security. Now it seems like they dont care about Border Security at all. Can you understand, what the difference is . Theres been a shift in democratic elite opinion. In 2006 Chuck Schumer and barack obama and joe biden and Hillary Clinton all voted for the secure fents act. And here we are, 12 years later, dont that have deal. There seems to be strong resistance. What do you think it is, what do you think it is, is it simply just trying to play politics and deny the president a victory . Ill let the democrats speak for themselves. None of them will talk to us. Most americans realize that part of securing the border is a physical barrier. Call it a waum, call it a fence, it has to be supplemented by Border Patrol agents and technology. Thats part of the negotiations right now. Has to include a physical barrier. As we have, in several places, along the southern border. Not just us, you detected a change too. A bit of a change since Chuck Schumer voted just 12 years ago for over 700 miles of secure double fencing on the southern border. Thank you, sir. Thank you all. You heard tomorrow cotton, conservative, who has been critical of any possible deal that the small group has negotiated. He wants a physical barrier at the border, something the president has been pushing for, perhaps thats why were hearing from a lot of folks that this may be a small group of senators agreeing on something but theres plenty of work ahead. Trace . What about the other side, what are you hearing from democrats . Democrats sound optimistic. Senate democratic senator Chuck Schumer saying a deal on daca, the children brought to the country with their parents, is close. The House Democratic leaders sounded supportive, noting the president wants a deal. He supports the dreamers, daca, he calls it, thats okay. And wants to have some Border Security. We all know we have a responsibility to secure our borders. If we can find our Common Ground there. Its all possible. I think people have good will coming together on both sides, both houses of congress on get the job done. It is important to note if and when theres agreement in the senate that does not guarantee passage in the house. There is still plenty of work ahead. Trace . A lot of work ahead. Chief Congressional Correspondent Mike Emmanuel, thank you. Our chief White House Correspondent john roberts, no surprise that jeff flake and the white house are on different pages when it comes to the bill. Trace not long before the press secretary came out for the Daily Briefing there was a meeting in the oval office that im told got heated on a couple offcation when is the senators came over and presenting their plan what to do about the dreamers. The president said that he appreciated as they were talking about a bipartisan fashion but when he looked at the plan he said they have a long way to go. The president also took a call from dick durbin on the democratic side of the Senate Earlier today, said hes pleased with the bipartisan process. But they have a lot more work to do. He sent everybody up to capitol hill to say youve got to get a little more of what we want here at the white house in to this plan before im going to sign off on it. Sarah Huckabee Sanders summed up the white house position. Listen here. Secretary sanders i cant speak to the specifics of senator flake, i can tell you that a deal has not been reached and weve outlined what a geel would need look like on our end. You got to come into the room, in a pretty unprecedented way, and sat in there for almost an hour listening to the president talk about it, listening on the president commit to getting a solution on this. Right now, were counting on republicans and democrats to come together. Which we think they will, to make a deal on daca and on Border Security. Senator tom cotton of arkansas, one of the primary Republican Point people on getting some sort of fix for daca that includes Border Security, called the proposal that was presented to the president a, quote, pine needle of a deal. Arkansasianism that sarah Huckabee Sanders did not repeat. Cotton said it was joke of a deal. The white house didnt go that far, trace, just saying they need to do better, need to do more before they come back to the president. Trace . First time i had heard that. John roberts stand by. The white house weighing in on the president s apparently contradicting statements about the spy program. We will cover that and much more, next. People would stare. Psoriasis does that. It was tough getting out there on stage. I wanted to be clear. I wanted it to last. So i kept on fighting. I found something that worked. And keeps on working. Now . They see me. See me. See if cosentyx could make a difference for you cosentyx is proven to help people with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. Find clear skin that can last. Dont use if youre allergic to cosentyx. Before starting cosentyx, you should be checked for tuberculosis. An increased risk of infections and lowered ability to fight them may occur. Tell your doctor if you have an infection or symptoms
