In antioch, the man that is said to have shot and killed four people in a waffle house restaurant is now in custody. We have a picture of that man being taken into custody in just about the last hour. Here he is. Authorities are planning for a News Conference to begin in a matter of moments. Well have live reports. Shepard youre seeing that because that was a feed from Associated Press television news, aptn. They were feeding that through a local station there. These are pictures of the scene in toronto. Catherine herridge who is from toronto herself and watching us throughout the day, catherine, as we wait for the authorities in nashville and we go there immediately when that News Conference begins, were also waiting for Firm Information from police. What were getting from local news sources is beyond disturbing. Shepard, in the last few minutes, the Canadian Media has now posted a photo of what they say is the white van that was responsible for mowing down those pedestrians. You can see from the image that the white van is in fact a ryder rental van. The witness described it was hitting people and the post office boxes that run on that section of young street. Young street for folks at home that have never been to toronto, this is the major north south artery. It runs for dozens of miles. As i remember, its the longest if not one of the longest arteries that runs north south in canada proper. The last thing ill say, theres video that is just been posted of the suspect being taken into custody, shep. Shepard thank you. Well continue to monitor breaking developments out of toronto. For the moment, i want to go to breaking news outside nashville, antioch, tennessee where authorities are convening on a rainy afternoon of the capture of a suspect in the waffle house murders. From his apprehension, he was taken to the south precinct where he requested a lawyer and refused to make a statement. Reinking has been takening to the General Hospital to be checked out and then taken to jail where he will be booked on four counts of criminal homicide. The Apprehension Team consisted of members from the Police Department specialized investigation narcotics unit. Almost all of those persons are undercover. The supervisor is lieutenant laura. He was here at the scene. He will describe to you what happened. After lieutenant laura speaks, well hear from david briley and then well take your questions. Lieutenant laura . Good afternoon. I want to start by saying great job by everyone, all the agencies that assisted. This began today, our narcotic units investigating any calls on suspected identification of this person. Dispatchers from ecc were contacting me directly. Our team was in charge of looking and investigating any of the sightings. We had a call at 5000 Mountain Springs drive. What the call was, there was a person that was matching the description of the suspect who went was going through a construction site behind the complex and into the wooded area. Our detectives, all three units, narcotics unit and the task force responded to the scene. When they got to the scene, there were several workers from the tva that were pointing us, saying the person went through the woods. The detectives as well as the sergeants all went up to the wooded area and saw a pathway in the woods. They start to walk the path and as they went through the wooded area, they spread out. Some went one direction, some went to other. Kyle williams noticed a suspect in front of him as he was walking forward. The suspect turned around and detective williams saw his face and realized that was the suspect. At that point, detective williams drew down on the suspect. The suspect proned out. He told him to get on the ground. He got down immediately and proned himself out. He was taken into custody and put him in cuffs. At that point, detectives cut off he had a backpack on. The description was a marine shirt, dark jeans and a backpack. Thats what he had on. He had a maroon shirt, dark jeans and a backpack. While in custody, the detectives cut off the backpack. When they looked into the backpack, they saw a silver semiautomatic weapon with 4 to 5 caliber ammunition, a flashlight and a holster. In the back pocket, he had a wallet and a colorado i. D. That had his information on there and which is how we were able to identify him. Mayor david briley. Good afternoon. First, id like to say thanks to the community, to the citizens of nashville. A tip from the community is what led to the arrest today. Theyre being vigilant was an important part of what happened today. Id like to thank the metropolitan Police Department and chief anderson for all of their work over the last 36 hours. Theyve been relentless in searching for the shooter. The conditions have been quite bad for the last 36 hours. So it was tough work. I want to thank them personally. On behalf of all of the citizens for nashville for everything that they did. Yesterday was a horrible day for the city of nashville. It brought home a real tragedy to this community. Today is a day where we can start to move on as a community, i hope. But i hope everybody will share a commitment that i have to help the families that lost their loved ones and who are still suffering in the hospital right now. Were going to have to gather around them and help lift them up over the coming weeks. Obviously a tragedy. We need to move on as a community and do what we can to curb this violence in the future. Chief, steve anderson. Certainly this apprehension was a result of teamwork throughout the metropolitan nashville Police Department. Almost all of our components were involved. The swat team, k9, flight, on and on. We had the majority of our detectives out here. Certainly teamwork effort in terms of our support from our federal and state partners. Department of homeland safety and Homeland Security, had a team of state troopers, the fbi had an enormous amount of resources. They started several teams from washington to assist us in this search. The atf and the secret service likewise. Its a community effort. This wouldnt have been accomplished without the cooperation of the community. It was the citizens tip that led to this apprehension. The businesses that have supported us, bringing food out here to feed the officers out there in the rain, the cold and the dark. I applaud everybody involved. Good afternoon. Yesterday was a very tragic day in this community. Law enforcement partners came together. We were determined to be relentless to bring this young man to justice. Lets go back to the moment of capture. What was his demeanor. Did he have anything to say . I was not at the location. I was getting information relayed. There was a little miscommunication at one point. From what i understand, as soon as the detective saw him, there was no communication other than, you know, drawing down on him and he got on the ground and proned out and taken into custody. Did not try to resist . Not at all. Did he make any statement . Not that i know of. Did he show any remorse . I have not received any news anywhere that he made it in statements at all. That location is about two miles away from here, would you say. Do you have any idea how he spent the last 36 hours . A lot of that information is information i cant answer because we dont know. We believe that hes possibly stayed in the same area, but again, 5000 Mountain Springs is not far from here. Its behind where he lived. We dont know until the investigation continues. He was clearly able to get some material, was he not . He got the backpack, got his gun, got his shirt. Yes, when he was caught, he did have a marine shirt, dark jeans and a semi eat weapon, flashlight and and ammunition. Thats all we have at this point. And originally it was reported [question inaudible] [sirens]. So originally two guns went missing yesterday. Where is the fourth gun located . I have no idea. The silver pistol was on his person. The 45 found in his backpack, was it loaded . Yes, sir. So a reminder of the continuing threat. Yes. How much time passed from the call that came out to construction site to when he was taken into custody . Id say as soon as the dispatcher contacted me by phone, we got the information and then our detectives were assisting on another location that they were searching. We told them just due to the fact that this location was behind cambridge elementary school, we wanted to make sure it was a priority. We told our detectives, three sergeants went to the location. At that point, ten minutes tops between the time that we received it and the time the guys were dispatched out there. [question inaudible] are you stating from the time yesterday until the shooting till now . How concerned are you that Travis Reinking has a past mental history and many runins with Law Enforcement. The fbi is aware of him. How concerned are you that he slipped through the cracks . From our perspective, after the incident at the white house and the assessment that happened in the springfield office, that every federal resource was brought to bear and that we were able to effectively neutralize what we felt was a threat at the time by ensuring that he did not have the ability to purchase or own weapons and the weapons were taken. How was he able to get the gun back . That i would have to refer you to the Illinois State police. [question inaudible] were investigating all the possibilities. Right now theres no information. Should his far have given him back the weapons . I cant make that assessment. Its a tragic thing. He was not able to possess or own those weapons so on its face, yes. Has his father given a reason why the weapons were given back . I havent heard that. Are there any gun laws the father may have violated . I would refer that over to atf. Is it possible his father could be the subject of gun laws could his father have violated gun laws . Yes. As far as you know from your agency, as has the father told you why he gave them back . I cant speak to that . Is he under investigation. All federal partners are looking at him. Could he face charges . He could. Reinking had guns here in tennessee. Even though they were taken away in illinois, should he have had weapons in tennessee . He shouldnt have, yes. In tennessee . In tennessee. He was legally stripped of his ability to purchase or possess weapons . That goes back to the fbi. They control the system, not atf. Lieutenant lara. Yes, sir. Give us an idea of how this man was able to survive and escape your drag net. What do you think that he was able to do . I have to say i dont know. We dont have that information. I wasnt involved in a lot of the planning and a lot of the search. I had a specific job. Theres a lot of things that we have to take into account that i dont know of. All i know is when we caught him, he was at 5000 Mountain Springs. A good chance he had been there since this occurred. That is information that i cant give you. Did you get a chance to look at him . What was his physical condition . I was not over there. He looked like he was tired from what i was told. Ready to give up . [question inaudible] that specific area and those woods, during the time that i was working and our guys were there, we didnt change that area that i know of. I know that today was the first time that we had that call to that wooded area behind the construction site. Thats where he lived, right . Is there anything else youre looking for . Like anything else youre looking for . You want to refer to the other investigators involved. Thats something i wasnt involved in. You said you didnt canvas the area where he was apprehended. That is the area behind his apartment complex. I did not personally. I know there were several other units involved. I was not personally. None of my unit was involved in that canvassing. I know there were several units and agencies involved and assists. I know that at one point we heard that just about every apartment complex out here was doors being knocked on and areas being searched. I know that that area, when this tip came in, as soon as it came in, we responded to make sure that we were able to verify if it was accurate or not. Are you confident that he was acting alone . I dont have that information. You have to refer to somebody else. When they came upon him there in the woods, how far back was he . From what i was told, he didnt try to run. As soon as the detectives saw him, he pulled out his weapon and was told to get on the ground and immediately get on the ground, proned out. Others cuffed him, searched him. Found his i. D. And found the backpack and weapon in there. We have a crew last question. We have a crew where he was captured. It appears that Law Enforcement is pulling out bags of evidence. Can you talk about what they gathered so far . I dont personally know that. Maybe refer to mr. Aaron. Well talk about when the article searches are done in the woods. This area, as you know, was the subject of extensive searching yesterday. That is where the last sighting was. 8 30 sunday morning. There were police dogs, officers. That area was widely searched yesterday. How long he had been there, you know the report from the citizen yesterday was he was shirtless. Today he has a red shirt. We have a myriad of questions for him. As i said at the beginning, when he arrived at the south precinct, asked for a lawyer and refused to answer questions. Thank you all. Shepard there you go. The latest from antioch, tennessee. The suspect is in custody. Earlier reports is there was no reason to believe there were suspects. We have a picture of the suspect that well show you now. No, theres the suspect taken into custody this afternoon. Had in his possession a handgun in his backpack when arrested. He had reported to have been naked the day before or i should say when the shooting took place in the middle of the night at the waffle house in antioch. A young man wrestled the gun away. Hes lawyered up and more information to come. Breaking news now on fox news channel. This was the scene a short time ago in toronto. Someone driving a van which we now have a picture on to up on to the sidewalk and took a trip a half a mile on the sidewalks. Reports were the driver was going between 35 and 45 miles per hour. And now we have pictures of the takedown of the suspect. Look at this. That was that. The suspect taken into custody, believed to have been the only person in the van at the time that this happened. Motivation . Police are not saying anything yet except around 1 30 this afternoon, he drove this rental van on the sidewalk, managed to make a turn in the course of running over multiple people. The indications are now that the van was making a screeching noise and it was going by. Some people were able to jump out of the way. Varying reports that a number of witnesses say they saw a stroller flying through the air. We know there are fatalities. We saw them from the helicopter shot. Theres reports out of canada on numbers. We havent gotten them from police yesterday. Ryder trucks made a statement saying theyre aware of the incident. They take safety and security of their fleet seriously and cooperating with the authorities on this matter. The mayor of toronto has stepped forward. Nobody has given a word on motivation yesterday. If they have been able to speak with the suspect and get that thing, we dont yet know about it. I believe there is a live News Conference coming in. Lets listen. A witness interview. I took that picture. I got there 20 minutes, 30 minutes later. Who did you see when you left there 20 minutes later . I saw cops everywhere. I saw tow truck drivers, ambulances. I walked up the street. I sad body bags. I saw three body bags myself. Shoes on the ground, which ive mentioned over and over. I saw people everywhere. Ambulances. This is toronto and its starting to happen. Why did you want to specifically mention the shoes . Because a loved one [technical difficulties] the hospital has confirmed but a news release that they received seven patients from the scene at the Trauma Center. They locked down the Emergency Department as a precaution. The hospital confirms theyre working to ensure theres enough beds for all of those injuries. The toronto mayor has sent out condolences and a promise to get to the bottom of whatever it is that happened. Weve gotten no information from police just yet on anything about this suspect.
