FOXNEWSW Special Report With Bret Baier December 3, 2018

Gift a father can give his child is the gift his father gave him which is unconditional love. As i watch president bush today and the grief palpable on his face, we have lost a president , we have lost something of the better nature in our politics, one of those shining lights has left us but george w. Bush has lost a dad and hes the first president its interesting, hes the first president who has to bury his father, the president , with john adams died on july 4, 1826, 50th anniversary of the declaration of independence they couldnt get word so he was buried before he could get home for his fathers funeral so this is the first time a former president , the son, is burying the former president , the father. Bret it is poignant to watch and listen in to the rotunda there as the military has a special place in his heart for president george w. Bush. Obviously as a former navy aviator. Fought in world war ii. He was well respected, but well respected how he handled the missions that he gave him, byron byron. Use one of the people going by, the congressman elect dan crenshaw, navy seal paying his respects. People remember that from the saturday night live back and forth. He ended up winning his race and here before will be sworn in january. A very george w. Bush moment on saturday night live, actually. A true apology was made. Not one of those wine the if anybody was offended apologies. Came on the set, made some jokes, made good plea for the kind of political discourse that george h. W. Bush wanted. He oversaw the first gulf wa gulf war. 500,000 troops sent to throw Saddam Hussein out of kuwait. Enormously complex enterprise done with a lot of patience. Colin powell, who just saw there helping to organize that. It was a huge victory that was the norms victory parade here in washington with a big flyove. George hw george h. W. Bush procs popularity sword to heights. There are Many Democrats who didnt decide to challenge him in 1992 because it was no use. He was simply going to win reelection. Things changed dramatically in the next year or so. The achievement of actually organizing that particular military campaign was extraordinary. The only president who would reach Approval Ratings was george w. Bush, number 43, after 9 11. Who knows if well see any kind of those numbers again anytime soon. We have such a different situation, such a Different Division in the country. But well see. Corresponded peter doocy is outside the Capitol Visitors Center this evening where the public is waiting for the opportunity to go inside. Good evening, peter. Good evening, martha. The line is building on a chilly night here in d. C. With the sun down. Everybody is from a different place and everybody has a story. This is rob and mark. You drove for her a half hours. Why did you want to be here . What is your interest in coming to see a president lying in state . I wanted to come and pay respects to a great man who dedicated his life to service. I am very involved with my party locally. I just want to be able to take this opportunity that you dont get very often for a man who dedicated his entire life. He was ambassador to the u. N. , Vice President , and president. Rob and mark from raleigh. And now that what was it that made you want to come to the . We just wanted to honor a truly great man. He was the the best compliment you can give someone is to be a great man that he was a great man and a great president. Wasnt a tough decision to divert here to washington . When we heard he was passing, this was someplace we needed to be. How about you . Same. When we heard that president bush had passed, we knew we were coming back here. We are just honored to be able to be here. Weve got raleigh, ohio, cliff from canada, toronto. Why did you want to come . We were here anyway. We planned to come to washington. This just happened. So, we are here. How long have you been waiting in the line . About 1 30. Thats about five hours. What is your big take away so far just from what youve seen watching. We have a view of the proceedings earlier. What do you think . Its very moving. I think that president bush was worthy of all the adulation people are giving him. Hes the leader of the free world. To the people of canada, hes still the president. We are part of the free world. Hes president of the free world. Im here to pay homage to him. Thank you, cliff. There are some people who tacked on a couple of extra days or change their plans are ready here in washington. Others drove all day and have been standing there all day and theyve still got another hour and a half to go before they can enter the security line to go and see the 41st president. Special moment. Good thing to be a part of and for any american to have that opportunity, its really an opportunity. Peter, thank you very much. A big part of george h. W. Bushs legacy will be the foreign interaction with leaders around the world. Youll have brian or rudy the canadian Prime Minister taking part of a funeral on wednesday. Leaders around the world continue to weigh in. President bush made his mark on the world stage throughout his single fouryear term. Hard to think about. Might have the most excesses on the Foreign Policy part of any one term president. Senior for the fair corresponded greg palkot joins us now from london. Thats absolutely true. Its astounding how much happened in the presidency of george w. Bush. It george w. Bush. Astounding when you think it was only four years. I was at the fall of the bearing wall back in 1989. I felt the gratitude for the people, the u. S. , and the president bush. Gratitude for the leaders too. We heard this from german counselor chancellor angela merkel. I was in the white house visiting george bush. We will never forget that. With his background in politics and the policy, military, intelligence, and Vice President alongside ronald reagan, he was very wellequipped for the task. He worked closely with former soviet leader michelangelo chaffed we happened to Work Together in years of great changes, gorbachev stated. The result was the and neck of the cold war and the nuclear arms race. He was a genuine partner. He assembled a collection of the willing to push aside Saddam Husseins forces out of kuwait. International conference followed which pushed the mid east a bit towards peace. Heres what israeli Prime Minister benjamin that yahoo had to say. We in his his decisive victory over Saddam Hussein. As well as his efforts to advance peace in the middle east in the madrid peace conference. Also the first president to host Nelson Mandela after his release from prison. Buschs handling of the end of the apartheid regime. Dealing with Tiananmen Square crackdown, and dealing with corrupt panamanian leader heres what he had to say about postcold war europe, great and noble dream. He helped a lot of people with that dream all around the world. Back to you. Greg palkot back in london but lets go back to dana perino quickly about the relationship that 41, president 40 wyden, i had with his staff. I mentioned earlier, dana, former sec commissioner rob vic dowd sent me a note and he was actually a former advanced guy for george w. Bush. He was taking the call being by the casket tomorrow night and the advanced folks, the secret service folks, the people who ever worked for president george h. W. Bush, the relationship is pretty unique. I wanted to comment on that because we saw members of the cabinet that were there, colin powell, james baker. Many other people that are there tonight. If you worked in the bush 41 administration i believe you are invited to come have this velvet velvet, to walk by the casket. Many of them will also be invited to the funeral. Eight years as Vice President and the four years as president. Marlo fitzwater, the press secretary for both reagan and bush, told me that in january of 1993 when they were leaving the white house, they said they had their heads hung in shame, that they never thought that people would know how great a man george h. W. Bush was. As Marc Thiessen pointed out, 41 live long enough to see history change on that point and now you see this worldwide outpouring and love for bush 41. But a lot of this has to do with how they conducted themselves in the postpresidency. Data i want to point out that this is the cabinet, the bush 41 cabinet. Elizabeth dole, served in the cabinet. They kept a very tight group come up part of it was through the points of light foundation. Part of it through the barbara bush literacy foundation. You have the library down at college station, all of that working together to keep these bushies in contact. They stayed in touch with each other sometimes through colleagues, to the networks professionally. But really there is a friendship at the family that takes place in any administration. I think you could really see that here tonight and youll see it over the next couple of days as well. Joint staff passing by as well. Dana, thank you. Lets go back to Juan Williams who was standing by and watching all of this with us in new york as we see these cabinet members cycling through, juan, you think of all the experiences theyve had together. The ups and downs through the military events with regards to panama and iraq. These people have been through quite a bit together. Indeed, martha. One of the things that strikes you about a great leader are the people he selects. What you see here as you watch these people filed by our people of great experience and expertise. George h. W. Bush appreciated their Public Service and their knowledge, their background, their experiences. Thats why he picked them. He was careful in selecting them. I was just listening to danna listening to how they maintain their bonds. Again, thats emblematic of the kind of person that was their leader. That he was someone who also maintained to work bonds with those who worked for him and those he knew. You know, i had the wonderful opportunity as a White House Correspondent to travel with the adVice President bush as he would go around the country. This was the reelection for ronald reagan. At times they could have a difficult relationship. Reagan, charismatic, larger than life, former actor g. E. Spokesman. Former Vice President george h. W. Bush was a policy wonk, former head neck of the Republican National committee. When i was we would stop at picnics, we would go to dinners. He would know people who would be active in local g. O. P. County politics. Not only would he know the county officials, hed know the city officials. He had no friends of friends and have written them notes. Everybody would have time with the Vice President of the united states. Again, so approachable to extend the hand, again to military people. I think he saw himself always first and foremost as someone who had served our country and put himself on the line. Delaying his time, completing yale to sign up for the military committed a volunteer, to go in and fight the war. The youngest flyer, youngest aviator in the military at the time, someone who put himself out and almost lost his life for a country. The value of expertise, the value of experience, the closest to individuals, taking time with people. Again, as a dad, i would say to my children and all american children, this is as the example to what it means to be a public servants, to be an american patriot. We are back with the panel, final thoughts here. Juan mentioned president reagan and at times especially in the beginning he was an opponent. He put Vice President bush on his ticket as a getting the party together. Conservatives, looking back some of them had some issues with president george h. W. Bush. David souter was on the supreme court. Got a lot of criticism for how he ruled the number of times. But now there seems to be a look back at the conservatism of president bush and a different view in history looking back at that administration. He wasnt perfect. There is a temptation when we are in these moments remembering somebody to overlook the mistakes he made. Every president makes mistakes. George h. W. Bush would be the first essay he made mistakes in office. President George Hw Bush in an interview said he lost because he raise taxes. As we look back with the distance of history, we can see the good that he did. I take one issue with what my former boss said, he would be the most consequential first term president ever, managing the fall of the soviet union, rick and structuring pelvic requests made mistakes along the way, but he did those things. There is really no shame in losing an election after that. If you recall, in 1945, Winston Churchill was defeated by british voters because they decided the to rebuild Charles Krauthammer actually wrote a column about that exact same thing which im going to talk about with daniel krauthammer, his son, after the show. This is whats so interesting. The revolt in the Republican Party against bush led by new greg inch Newt Gingrich led to the tea party, led to donald trump. The institutions that he championed and created, even the multilateral agreements, are still there. They havent been obliterated. I think thats the most amazing thing about him. He really was a man of international affairs. Dan quayle, his Vice President , speaking in an interview today. They describe talking with president bush about how they really felt they had handled so many of these crises very well. But what did we do domestically . Thats really the big weakness. It was the big weakness that bill clinton exploited. I think at times president h. W. Bush was kind of amazed that bill clinton, this governor of arkansas without much experience doing alice, who had avoided the draft, was beating this war hero from the greatest generation. It was a completely different you are right about greg goodrich. The world that george w. Bush inhabited change tremendously. Hes the only president in our lifetime to win the third term for his party. Youve got to remember that. He has a lot of vision in terms of Foreign Policy. He wanted to see the reunification of germany perhaps earlier than the others were fo for, and a way that we still see a lot of the ramifications of it in the structure of europe. Absolutely. Those are lasting achievements that pave the way for the expansion of nato, the strengthening of the atlantic alliance, the collision he built in the gulf war, set in motion that ended up challenging al qaeda. He did a lot of great things. He also made mistakes. Weve been debating a lot about u. S. Politics for saudi arabia in the wake of the killing of khashoggi. It was president bush to make the decision to keep our relations alive in beijing after Tiananmen Square. There is the famous picture of even his Foreign Policy wasnt without controversy. Probably things in retrospect done differently if he had the chance, but thats true of any president. President s arent perfect. As the public will start coming in soon within the next hour or so, we expect the president and the first lady to have a private moment that you will be to see here on Fox News Channel too, paying respect to the 41st president lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda. Right now we are going to say thank you, panel, and thank you, martha. We are going to see you at the top of the hour for your show. But this has been truly a moment that i think steering the country through remembrance is really important. It is really important. I hope families at home are watching all of this over the next few days. Used to be in school you would pause and all of the kids would watch this kind of moment. The funeral of an american president. I hope we see that over the coming days. Im going to go prepare for the story coming up at 7 00 this evening as we move forward. Well be watching all of this throughout the entire evening and thank you very much for being with us through the beginnings of it tonight. Will continue to look alive at the pictures from capitol hill today. We expect former Vice President dan quayle either during this hour or marthas hour. All of todays headlines, believe it or not there was news today. Well check in with john roberts. Daniel krauthammer, Charles Krauthammer, will jewel be live here on the set. Will join us live here on the set. Ignition sequence starts. 10. 9. Guidance is internal. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. Bret welcome back. Lets check todays headlines and there are a lot of them today. Top advisors to independent vermont senator Bernie Sanders met in the weekend. Increasing talk of another president ial run by the 77yearold selfdescribed democratic socialist. Sanders almost derailed Hillary Clintons run to the nomination in 2016. Some of his people are telling the Associated Press that while the final decision has not been made yet, neither age nor a large democratic field will dissuade sanders from taking another shot at the presidency, perhaps. About 31,000 children who were driven from their homes in the Northern California wildfire returned to school today. And schools were lost to those flames. Students are meeting in makeshift facilities. At least 88 people were killed in the fire and dozens to this day remain unaccounted for.
