Seeing downed power lines. Were seeing plenty on that little side street. Let me just show you the tide is what theyre looking for here at the folley beach pier. Theyre worrying about how many storm strong it may bring. The mayor here we were talking at the fire station. Hes worried particularly about what this storm may do to beach erosion. You can see here a foot or two taking a real hit on it. He said, the mayor, that he wants to ask for some assistance for replenishment because two years ago, irma hurt this beach with erosion and now its doing it again with dorian. You can see the beach erosion on the other side. Now that we have another situation. Just in the last few minutes, dana, one thing officials had to ask for is even though dorian isnt making landfall, it is a dangerous storm. These are dangerous winds, dangerous flooding. But if you look in the distance, you can see here, ill try and get my camera man out here. We have half dozen people that have chosen to try and swim in the beach. They just came out here five minutes ago. This is an unbelievably dangerous situation. There are more people coming out in this water right now. So thats the situation here. With this storm, as you can see, its far from over. The winds have been blowing at 50, 60 miles an hour for the last six to eight hours with this storm coming in, the surge. If somebody gets in trouble down there, there are no life guards out here. Theres nobody watching. Theres no cameras. This, right here, is the kind of thing when you cover hurricane, that i absolutely am terrified to see. Dana are authorities able to do anything about that . Is there a consequence for defying them . Well, yes, absolutely. You are not allowed to be out here on the beach. Youre definitely not allowed to be in the water. Im not sure if you can see down there. I would guess that you will have the authorities down here, if theyre watching in the fire house, we will give them a call and let them know this is a situation that puts peoples lives in danger. If they get into trouble and Law Enforcement officer or a First Responder has to go in and try to get them that puts them at serious risk for their lives as well. Theres a reason you get an alert on your phone that says life threatening storm surge, life threatening ocean conditions. Weve been getting those up and down the coast as weve followed it. This is the closest dorian has come within 50 miles of the coast, unleashing the power that it has. Yet, youve got people taking ef selfies of their friends in the water trying to swim. Dana well, griff jenkins, i wish they could hear you. Thank you very much, griff. Now to jeff flock. Hes further inland, in charleston. Jeff, whats it like there . Reporter nobodys swimming here, fortunately, dana. Although you could almost swim in the street. Thats the problem in charleston here close to the mainland. Thats what you see down there. You see this all over downtown charleston. That is to say flooding in the streets. The other problem, power. I dont know if martin is able to turn around and look at this pole, dangerously close. Weve got some pictures. Thats a transformer up there still holding. Weve got pictures of other transformers still exploding. This is what they do in other hurricanes. Next thing you know, the sky is being lit up by those transformers. Weve got, as you reported at the out set of the broadcast, more than 200,000 people now without power in South Carolina alone. And many more in georgia and florida. Lot of work to do cleaning this one up. As griff reported, were not even getting the hurricane. This is just the outer bits. You see what has happened. Dana jeff, is the worst behind charleston now . Reporter i think so. Yeah. You know, the damage has been done. Maybe if we take a stroll up here, this is trees down on power lines. I think this some of the worst of the damage. Not like we have roofs torn off like that. Its the flooding. Its the downed power lines that are the problems here. Dana well, you stay safe, jeff flock. Thank you. Reporter will do. Dana now for many dorian is heading next, we have more from the weather center. Rick . Still is moving towards the north, which is getting really close, maybe the center, right around the myrtle beach area. Good news where griff was just in folly beach. The winds are going to push the water, the storm surge water that came in, gonna push it off shore. Thats gonna help them not go through that next storm surge. Any point to the north will still be watching the storm surge move on in as well as the wind and any additional rain. Theres the center of the storm yesterday. The storm went right over the gulf stream and strengthened a bit. We didnt expect to see that happen, but it did. Its an incredibly organized storm. Latest gusts at 56 miles an hour in charleston. A buoy just off shore, 94 miles an hour. Really strong winds with that. It will continue to inch closer to the shore throughout the next number of hours. Theres also a really significant threat. We had nine reports of tornados. Were gonna see a lot today. Theres one Tornado Warning right now up there between greenville, just south of the greenville area. We are going to watch that continue. As a matter of fact, with a very high risk for tornados throughout the day today and overnight, especially in toward the North Carolina area. Anywhere you see that red. Where that red is, thats where we see the worst threat. Hurricane warnings still in effect through the coast of North Carolina then Tropical Storm warning north of that across areas of the chesapeake bay. Well see significant flooding go into the area. Heres how it looks by overnight tonight. We have the hurricane really close into the North Carolina coast line. Throughout the morning hours. Probably making some sort of landfall around Cape Hatteras or out toward the outer banks. Then take a look at what happens here through friday evening and saturday. Were going to see some of this move across cape cod and the islands and some energy in toward parts of may. Our greatest weather risk is here, the flooding from the storm surge, the rain that falls on top of that up to 10 to 12 inches. So we have a cat 2, really strong cat 2 on the coast here. Were almost done with it but we have a couple more day. Dana we are getting there. Thank you, rick. Dorians death toll rising to 20 in the bahamas. As rescue crews scour the hardest hit areas, the number is supposed to go higher. 70,000 people are in need of immediate humanitarian relief. Widespread devastation with thousands of homes and businesses completely destroyed. We will go live to Steve Harrigan in the bahamas later in the hour for an update there. Democrats raising eyebrows at their proposals in the forum on Climate Change. If they win the white house, could a ban on Plastic Straws go nationwide. And are meat eaters really destroying the planet . And will cheese burgers become a thing of the past . Experience amazing at your lexus dealer. Dana 2020 democrats were laying out their plans to save the planet during a Forum Last Night focusing on Climate Change. Along the way, andrew yang and Kamala Harris were supporting a war on meat. Heres yang explaining why karn sroeurs could change their environment. Its good for your health if you eat less meat. Theres a country where theres a lot of autonomy so you cant force peoples eating changes on them. Dana the founder and president of environmental progress, a Nonprofit Organization promoting Clean Power Energy justice for all, which we all love those things. I want you to listen to one more sound byte about this war on meat. This is Kamala Harris. I love cheese burgers from time to time. Right . I just do. I think that but there has to be, also, what we do in terms of creating incentives that we will eat in a healthy way and be educated about the effect of our eating habits on our environment. We have to do a much better job of that. The government has to do a phrufp better job of that. Dana what do you think about this, especially in regard to Meat Consumption and Climate Change. How much would it really make a difference . Well, not much. I was disappointed to hear the candidates talk about that. Its inconsistent from what we know from science. Going vegetarian only reduces a persons Green House Gas emissions 2 to 4 . The big emissions still come from our use of energy. The bigger point was missed which is that the way you get significant reductions in Carbon Emissions from meat is by concentrating cattle in what environmentals often announce in factory farming. You get 1 of less of the Green House Gas from factory farming than you do from Grass Fed Beef which is often promoted as better for the environment. It also requires 10 of the land. Then i think theres other questions about why are we promoting a high carb diet when theres a growing amount of science that suggests, in fact, eating larger amounts of animal fats and proteens than doctors have recommended in the past is also important for preventing things like obesity, Heart Disease and other problems . Dana i have just noticed, yang mentioned that u. N. Study that says going vegetarian would help save the planet. Im skeptical about that. Lets move on to the next topic. Plastic straws. Elizabeth warren tried to steer it in a different direction. Watch. This is exactly what the fossil fuel helps we are talking about. They want to stir up a lot of controversy around your light bulbs, around your straws and your cheese burgers, when 70 of the pollution of the carbon we are throwing in the air comes from three industries. Dana have plastic bans ever really shown a decrease in Carbon Emissions . Well, no. In fact, the best available science shows the opposite. After plastic bags were banned in california, Carbon Emissions actually went up because people used more carbon alternatives. Not just paper bags, but also cloth bags. I think this is not really a climate issue that people are worried about. We all saw the sea turtle with the plastic straw stuck up its nose. 95 of the Plastic Waste in the ocean doesnt come from rich developed economies like ours. It comes from poor economies that dont have trash collection systems. So i think this is not an issue that lends itself to virtue signaling in the sense that if you really want to prevent that waste from going to the ocean, we need to help poor countries develop so they can collect their trash. Dana solving the wrong problem. I hate when that happens. Gasoline in your car, andrew yang, a vehicle buy back program. Watch . Will we have to drive electric cars . There will still be some legacy gas guzzlers on the road for quite sometime. This is not a country where youre going to take someones clunker away from them. You are going to offer the buy the clunker back and help them upgrade. Dana this just in, mike. Beto orourke, another candidate, we have a tweet that says beto orourkes Spokes Person said he is taking the volt bus because it pollutes less. Airport travel security takes nearly every bit of time as the four hour volt ride. Why not choose the lower carbon option. I get that. Our vehicles are actually becoming more and more fuel efficient. Welsh definitely. Cars are not only becoming more fuel efficient. Theres a lot of things to like about electric cars and fuel cell cars in terms of cars being a huge source of air pollution in citys. I think what bothers me is kwruft the subsidies that working people are having to pay to very wealthy people to buy teslas. Dana thank you. Absolutely. Theres just a better way of supporting innovation than making this kind of regressive tax. I mean, look, most Energy Transitions occur with the transportation revolution. I think thats going to happen. I think theres real questions about how we do that. I think the key is its going to mean more mobility, faster speeds, farther distances and more miles traveled. The future is not going to have us traveling less, it will have us traveling more. Dana i dont want to lose you before we talk about Nuclear Power. Listen to senator warrens sound byte. In my administration were not going to build any Nuclear Power plants. We are going to start weaning ourselves off Nuclear Energy and replacing it with Renewable Fuels over were gonna get it all done by 2035, but i hope were getting it done faster than that. Dana mike, over to you. Every time a Nuclear Plant closes in the world, Carbon Emissions go up. Its just its not a controversy about that. So the idea shutting down Nuclear Plant is part of the Climate Conversation is nuts. I mean, the facts are in about nuclear versus renewables. France spends a little bit more than half as much more elect tries that produces 1 10 of the Carbon Emissions of germany. Nuclear is 75 of frances electricity. Renewables are in crisis in australia, britain, germany. Were in the midst of a collapse of the wind and Solar Industries around the world. I thought it was very this shows that candidates were really quite out of touch with both the science and current events. Dana its been a pleasure to have you on. Follow Mike Shellenberger on twitter. Well have you back. Thank you. Thanks, dana. Dana so you already know junk food is bad for kwrourb right . But can it also make you go blind . Dana about 25 union guards have been locked out of the xl energy plant by their employer. The plant sits right on the mississippi river, less than 40 miles northwest of minneapolis. The lockout reportedly coming after a breakdown in contract negotiations. London based Security Firm g4s took over the firm earlier this year and is planning changes in health plans for some employees. As for those who will watch over the plant during the walkout, replacement guards are currently being trained. A startling medical story is getting our attention. British researchers report a teen went blind after seven years of eating nothing but french fries, potato chip, white bread, processed ham and sausage. He was diagnosed with malnutrition and severe vitamin deficiency. Joining me is the medical director of city md. This seems like something that might have happened way in the past but this is very unusual that you would have somebody goes blind because of nutrition . Actually, the leading cause of preventible blindness in children is vitamin a deficiency. We usually see this in third world countries. What happened with him, it progressed slowly over time. He was found to be deficient in vitamin b12, deficient in vitamin d. This is in part because of the knew trig he wasnt eating fruiting and vegetables loaded with folic acid and b12. If you have a lack of b12 or folic acid, that can cause nerve problems. Dana there were two full diagnos diagnosis. Nutritional neuropathy. That could be, we dont know
