Under the bridge. From anyone trapped underneath the rubble. Days after the 950 tons span was installed over the busy stretch of southwest eighth street, the unthinkable has happened. Hello and welcome, everyone. Officials say at least eight vehicles were crushed in the collapse and we have team 7 coverage. Let me set the scene for everybody at this hour. You can get a live look on southwest eighth street. You can see its an extremely active scene. Eight trapped vehicles, eight victims to the hospital, this bridge collapsing around 1 30 in the afternoon. Lets get to live pictures of seven sky hd, which will give you an enhanced view of whats going on, and whats happening at this hour is that miamidade fire rescue has brought in large Tactical Units. Weve seen several excavators going in there. Trying to get rid of all the rubble so they can get beneath it to find out exactly if anyone is buried beneath all of that cement. Lets get to our video now. We spoke about the crushed cars. This will give you a good idea of what the scene looked like. This bridge which was recently installed this past weekend, as a matter of fact, to help people traverse a very busy southwest eighth street, it comes crashing down. We have another piece of video. This can show you the people on the ground who were injured. The big question right now are the numbers. How many people have lost their lives . How many people are injured. At this hour, officials are not going to give an exact number until they conceived through all of the rubble. We spoke to a bunch of witnesses. Lets take a quick listen to what they had to say. Like an explosion. I dont even know how to say, it was loud. Sounded like multiple bombs in one. It was terrible. It was super loud. It sounded like the world was ending. When you look back, you see is the bridge on the floor. It was awful. The cops just threw me out. I ran to see if anyone needed help. People injured. When i looked closely, the cars are just squished. I started crying. There are people in there, could be families. We turned left, and thats when it happened. I saw the bridge collapsing i saw the black car and there was a young lady. She got out and she was screaming. I think someone must have been in the back of her car. The gentleman that worked at the restaurant, i saw him run across to help her. The worst part was you dont want to do. I called 911. When i called, they didnt know what i was talking about. She said the new bridge . We want to get to this photograph which was sent to me by an eyewitness. Imagine driving down southwest eighth street. This picture really can bring you right into the scene. This bridge collapsing. Think about being in one of those cars near the bridge are unfortunately under that bridge. Lets get to the statement from fiu. Dear members of the university community, we are shocked and saddened about the tragic events unfolding at the fiu sweetwater pedestrian bridge. At this time, we are still involved in rescue efforts and gathering information. We are working closely with authorities and First Responders on the scene. We will share updates as we have them. We will bring a bag out here live to our live pictures on southwest eighth street. Still a very developing situation, because you need to get all of those Tactical Units in there. You need to get rid of all of this debris. They are not giving a number of casualties because they simply dont know at this hour. The only thing they will tell us is its a very serious situatio situation. They will be out here throughout the night. Live in sweetwater. Shepard our thanks to the news team on scene there. We have our own cameras on scene. I want to show you something thats happening right now. I want to take you right over here to the big wall where authorities have just pushed put a search dog has just gone in underneath the bridge. This is a spot just on the side. There is a crushed vehicle underneath. The authority has sent the dog in. To see if they have found someone who may be alive. In the last 30 seconds, theres a little bit more movement. The hope is they will be able to effectuate a rescue here at some point. These pictures are a condensed shot from across the way, and we are hopeful they may be able to save somebody. Its going to be a very, very difficult task this afternoon. Its been more than three hours since the bridge collapsed, and we are still waiting to find out if anyone is underneath there and still alive. Our correspondent phil keating is live on scene. So much work to be done. As they try to pull someone out. Absolutely. They are actively in search and rescue mode, as they discuss here, at the press briefing. They still cant say how many people have been reported missing. Friends and loved ones who may have been in the area driving down southwest eighth street when this happened and it cant get a hold of them. A total of eight cars were crushed underneath the bridge. All of those cars remain underneath it. Unclear whether all of the drivers, all the passengers within those cars have been pulled out. A total of eight people have been pulled out of the rubble and taken to local hospitals. According to the authorities here, two of them came from cars. There could be a lot more people still alive or perhaps clinging to life, still underneath the rubble. That is the working theory search and rescue crews are working with. There is at least 100 technical advisors and extrication experts, when it comes to the Construction Industry and dealing with concrete, especially when concrete collapses. Heavy equipment has been arriving here in the past hour, as we can see. Large backhoes. They moved to the big red crane out of there. That red green had been on the scene. This pedestrian walkway really was not open to the public yet. It was just put into place after being constructed elsewhere on saturday. It was spanning all eight lanes of southwest eighth street which is one of the busiest roadways in the metropolitan area of miami. Pick a city with a major, major artery. This is one of those. And its constantly full of cars and traffic. Its a big eastwest funnel to the suburbs and into downtown. Shepard phil keating on scene at the information center. This picture at which you are looking, we hope this is going to be a rescue. I mentioned they sent a canine in to see if there were signs of life. Our producer Heather Lacey is with this camera, and its operator, as we watch the scene. Heather, describe what youve seen, if you could, for our reviewers. Sure. Probably about 20 minutes ago i saw a dog, they released her dog. It went under the bridge. The firefighters have been gathering in the area where you can see them now. If you look at the picture from the other side, you can see three or four cars that are sort of caught under there. I am hearing a lot of noise. It sounds like riders, they like they are trying to grinders. They are trying to cut through rebar. Theres a big gathering of firefighters. Not sure whats happening. Speak to your hearing noises they are trying to get to something. Definitely. There is grinding noises. Shepard heather, from our perspective, i dont know how much better perspective you have than we do but can you tell if theres enough space under there where there might be a cavern, a void where someone could be alive . We heard one of our viewers was telling us about seeing a little boy in the back of the vehicle and not able to get to that child. Yeah. You know, there is space enough under there were if you are very, very lucky, you wouldnt be completely crushed. Probably about two and a half feet. You can see the firefighters kneeling down. On other parts of the bridge, that area, they are right in front of a truck. If i had to guess, i would say they are trying to do something with that truck. There is other areas to the left and right that are either more crushed or less crushed. Its really, really hard to say. You can see there are pockets where there could be possibly be people. Its so hard to say come as you said. Shepard have a broader view because you are on scene. For us, we only see this one spot. Are there authorities at different points along the bridge where they are doing something similar . Or is this the one spot . From my angle, there is a chopper overhead. From my angle, this is the concentration of activity that i can see. I dont see further down on the bridge or further away from me, i dont see a concentration of firefighters there. They seem to be targeting this particular area. Shepard i want to show our viewers. Hang with me, heather. Wsvn was showing video they have another portion. There are areas, as we can see, with the bridge is very much at an angle. Vehicles come had they been there wouldve been able to drive away, on the righthand side, as viewers can see. There is some areas where it looks the bridge and the pavement are frankly just feet apart, and only a couple. Definitely from our vantage point. We are trying to zoom out a little bit to demonstrate that to viewers. From our vantage point, as you said, theres a concentration right where we saw. Theyve got a crane. You might be able to see the folk from the crane. We have no idea what they are going to do. But from this side of the bridge, this is the area of concentration. We cant see on the other side obviously but there are fire trucks up and down the road in both directions. Shepard this gives us an idea of the vastness of it all. We have said throughout the day, to the point where i am sounding redundant, but to say that this is a busy area, its an understatement. The tamiami trail, running through the city, if you keep going it goes along alligator alley and take some of the west coast of florida. Before there were interstates on the west coast of florida, back when henry ford used to have his workshop and edison had his workshop along edison boulevard right there in fort myers, it was highway 41, the tamiami trail was the only way into southwest florida. It goes across the everglades and ends up your comfort four lanes in each direction. This is the spot where the bridge has collapsed. You have the best view, i must say, heather. This camera is going to be very valuable to us for the rest of the afternoon and into the evening. We cant thank you enough for it. The red cross Disaster Relief is on scene. The National Transportation safety board is headed down there. They are going to be leading an investigation as well. The authorities are in such a predicament because they do not know exactly how many people are under there. They are working to determine whether there is anyone to save. But what i will remember from the last three, three and a half hours, is from the lady who worked at the shop next door. Lianet sado said she saw two people in the front seat who could not have survived and a little boy in the back whom she couldnt help, after witnessing the bridge collapsed next door to her restaurant and unable to provide any sort of assistance about little boy. We will do our very best to find out about his situation and the rest of them in south florida. We are going to turn coverage over to the five but we will be monitoring this. Fox news was saying last night and earlier today that there were some expected staff changes ahead. They may number between two and four, depending on the timing. Weve been told by sources inside but some of these changes were imminent. A couple changes that have been talked about, and off a lot of chatter about this one. Secretary of Veterans Affair dr. David shulkin may be removed from his post. We were told by numerous officials in the white house, saying people outside, that he has lost the confidence of the president to some degree based on the findings of an Inspector General report as well as the travel where he had taxpayers foot the bill to take his wife to europe. He later reimbursed the treasury for that. But the president has always made Veterans Affairs a real priority. If hes got somebody in there who he doesnt think is managing it as well as it could be managed, he might make a change. There were rumors yesterday that rick perry, secretary of energy, might be the replacement. I am being told by white house officials that the president and rick perry have said he is not moving to the va. Another move that has name that has floated to the surface, a name familiar to fox news. Pete hegseth, he is wellversed in veterans issues. Fox friends host, his name is making the rounds again here at the white house, as a possible replacement for shulkin. A couple other items that may be in the offing sooner rather than later. H. R. Mcmaster, National Security advisor, has been rumored to not have a great relationship with the president for a long time. Theres a possibility he could leave and that john bolton, former u. S. Ambassador to the united nations, might take his place. Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked about staff changes. I dont have any personal announcements but we are looking for how we can better the system, whether its through policy changes are personnel changes. Not just at the top level but across the board. Weve made a number of changes within the personnel had made sure we are looking at how we can best serve our nations veterans. The president saying such talk about changes is a full story. I am told by some people that he is getting tired, kimberly, of these daily stories of staff departures and the chaos. Better to rip the bandage off all at once, get it out of the way. From a communications respected, what do you think about the way this is being handled. Dana every president should have people working for him or her they can trust that they have confidence in. Change is not necessarily bad. From a communication standpoint, the easiest story to cover in washington is personnel changes. If you want to force the media to cover your accomplishments, then youre going to have to serve them vegetables. The Broward County Sheriffs Office has released the footage from outside Stoneman Douglas high as the shooter began slaughtering more than 17 inside the school. The tape conference deputy scott peterson, the man assigned to protect the school, did not coincide all the massacre unfolded. Heres the thing. Hear me out on this. His lawyer jody russo says its unfair to call him a coward, that he called in the shooting to the Police Department and then set up an outside perimeter which is what the protocol established. On the other hand, people look at this, including the sheriffs department, and say his job was to go inside and confront the shooter. What does Kimberly Guilfoyle say . Kimberly departments have different protocol about how they security perimeter, what they do in terms of when they receive information. A911 call about respondent, who was first on scene, securing the perimeter and approaching, as information develops, to go in. When you have an active shooter situation, its really important is whats the procedure at the school . Are they aware of what the procedure is and what they are supposed to do . Are people there in place . They want to make sure they dont increase their casualties. They want to identify the location of the shooter. You clear a room by room to be able to go identify, locate, and eliminate or neutralize the shooter. Juan jesse, the sheriff Scot Peterson says basically he gave the man the information, the protocol, and he shouldve handled it and he didnt. Its not the departments fault. Jesse according to the protocol which we have right here, its not to set up a perimeter. The protocol says quickly engage the suspect because every time you hear a gunshot, you have to assume someone has been killed. They learn these lessons after columbine. You do not set up a perimeter. If its one person you go in, if its two people, you go in immediately and neutralize the shooter. He didnt do that. He stood outside and waited. If you listen to his radio transmission, the radio transmission, he says it could be firecrackers but i believe its gunshots and its coming i believe building 2011 or 211. That contradicts the statement he released through his attorney wish that we thought the shooting was somewhere outside. Why would you contradict yourself and take up a defensive position outside the building that you heard the gunshots from. Doesnt make any sense. You dont have to like the boss to admit the company is doing okay. For the democrats may be time to nominate an adult with an actual plan, not simply a call for hope and change or an undergraduate reliance on identity politics. You need a democrat who can engage and be a fighter. I think thats whats different. Going back to george w, people said thats a guy you want to have a drink with. You want to have a beer with him. Maybe now, joe biden who would be at the top of the list of the moment, is a guy you want to have a beer with. You need a guy who was willing to get down and dirty with trump. Basically the whole world collapsed in gas prices were high and he was a pathetic mess. And reagan came along at the right time. I dont think they have a chance of defeating him. I think its going to be a lot closer than it was in 2016. But they do need someone who can throw haymakers with President Trump. They have to do it in more of an aspirational way. I dont know if he was drafted so much as in some ways he was a phenomenon. People go for opposites. He mentioned bill clinton. One of the things that helped bill clinton is that he lost his congressional majorities in the first midterm. Then he worked with the democrats people were likely like this guy. Im not saying thats going to happen in this case but democrats benefit this year because theres no one face of the party. Just like republicans benefited in 2010 when there was no one face.
