And only two more opportunities for knees two candidates to debate each other. Take a listen to a little of what the candidates had to say today. We had a great great time last night. One of my favorite Baseball Players growing up, ernie banks used to get so excited about playing that e hed say lets play two. Im looking forward to the next debate and then the one after that. Did anybody see that debate last night . Oh, yes. One down, two to go. Last night was very exciting and almost every single poll had us winning the debate against crooked Hillary Clinton big league. For 90 minutes she argued against change while i called for dramatic change. We have to have dramatic change. We have to get rid of obamacare, we have to strengthen up our depleted military. In moments were going to be joined by president obamas 2008 Campaign Managerer, pluf and bill benton. We begin with campaign karl cameron who is reporting tonight from melbourne, florida where mr. Trump just wrapped up a rally. Karl . Reporter it doesnt look like it now but there were 9,000 people in this airport hanger in orlando just an hour ago and another 6500 outside, according to police. Donald trump knew he had a good night last night. He was pleased by it. Last night mr. Trump was talking about how he had problems with his mike and it kept cutting out. This morning Hillary Clinton said if youre blaming the mike, youve got a problem. Well get a better feel probably by the end of the week when the lengthy taken polls come out. But trump was on fire tonight. Watch. Last night i talked about how we have the worst socalled recovery since the great depression. The American People rendered their verdict. The postdebate polls, as i said to you were so great. But we exposed Hillary Clintons real position on nafta and transpacific partnership, another disaster that she lied about. She called it the gold standard. Reporter that was one of the things on which trump scored point last night. The campaign is riding pretty high on the idea that one of the things theyve been looking over the results and analysis of the debate last night that they hit well with was for the assertion of the last 26 or 30 years Hillary Clinton has been involved in washington and been involved in politics and gotten nothing done. They think that was the winning line last night and they plan to keep ringing the bell. What are the big takeaways from last nights event. David plouffe serve as president obamas 2008 Campaign Manager. Great to see you. What was your biggest take away . The debate u was really on for Hillary Clinton trying to win undecided voters and she needed to provide more enthusiasm. The first 15 minutes were fine for trump. After that it was a disaster. The question for me was and youre open about the fact that barack obama had a very bad debate, the first debate against romney. Yes. And by the way the bush was too in 02. If trump believes he did well and if he brings into the town hall meeting what he did in new york its going to be a disaster. One of the worse debates i think a Major Party Nominee has had. Oddly he talked about his fitness and temperament. Theres a lot of things coming out of the debate. Alicia saying its smart not to pay taxes. The former Miss Universe. His craziness a about call sean hannity. So she needed to energize her base. Who was her target . Who were they fighting over in that debate . I think there are undecided voters, true undecided voters and i think its hard for i dont think trump lost any vote last night but hes in a position in the race where he needs to add a vote. Undecided voters are not going to make their decision overnight. And then shes also got, you know, Younger Voters with, voters that might be thinking about gary johnson. Its very important that she convert some of those. Heres what Newt Gingrich came out and said, hes sickened by the intel leg churl dishonesty and smugness of the socalled intel leg churl idiots, talking about shes got the ivy league polish and smoothness but hes the one who appeal to the people out there suffering. Is there any truth to that . Thats a bizarre statement. Newt is off his rocker. Trump is going to do 42, 43, 44. Any republican is going to get that. Maybe in this lex you only need to get to 48 in the battleground states. Absolutely not. And his 30year thing, im sure that will be part of the next debate. Id put her record up, secretary of state, senator, first lady of a a and of the country versus what i think she exposed last night. Not paying taxes. He basically admitted that he doesnt pay taxes. Certainly for that two years that endedded up in the audit. Weve been watching the polls, although david doesnt pay as much attention to the polls that we do, we looks at other secret information that we dont have access to. In colorado the cnn poll shows hes at 42, shes at 41. Pennsylvania shes at 45, hes at 44. She had an 11point lead there. So it really looks like the race is tightening and could swing his way in the last six weeks. No . Theres going to be a poll ef day for whatever your view on the race was. There was a National Poll by nbc yesterday that had her up seven nationally which is the margin we beat mccain by. None of these polls look at 100 of the vote thats going to happen on election day. When you look at that shes got more to gain. And i think trump is coming up against a ceiling. So a poll that says if its 42 40, even if thats right, what about the other 18. Most of the polls this time after the first debate in 2012 had romney winning nationally. But what we were able to see is a president ial year turnout very much to our liking. I think shes got a decisive edge in the electoral college. Pennsylvania you dont need to look at analytics. Shes going to have to big of a margin for him to make that up. You say no way does he win pennsylvania . No way. What about florida . I think hes got the edge. I think shell win ohio too. What do you put the odds of a Hillary Clinton victory at . I say 100 . And you look at how do you get to 270 elect the other thing i say, the quality of the candidate matters. This is not someone i think whos got the temperament or the fitness for office to get a winning number in a president ial race. Hes got passionate supporters and thats important but he doesnt have the ability. Listen, Hillary Clinton has her challenges as a candidate. No question about that. The passion isnt quite where we like yet. But when you compare the two of them, thats what came away last night. Even if you dont agree with much of what he said, seemed president ial throughout the whole debate and trump particularly in the latter half of the debate became unhinged. Youre going to hear about some of those passionate viewers on twitter in five, four its always a joy. David mentioned Alicia Machado. Shes the former Miss Universe who trump allegedly called miss piggy and miss housekeeping. Well speak with her in a minute. But first, bill bennett. Great to see you. Great to see you. Ill serve you up what David Plouffe said and let you take a crack at that. What did you think in. 100 chance to win. Thats pretty good. I was a guy who used to make bets. Those are good odds. And i watched the business with hillary at the beginning of the show, looks like a little overconfidence. Be careful there with that overconfidence before you enter into the next debates. Youre right. This is a very tight race. The debate was interesting and engaging. Trump needs to make some adjustments and he missed some opportunities. You know when youre asked a question about cybersecurity, you know, hes just got to say it begins am home, hillary and then other things he needs to bring up. People saw passion about changing the country, a sense of earnestness about the country and where it is. And i think that spoeke to a lo of people. Even David Plouffe, 100 plouffe conceded that the fist couple of rounds went to donald trump. What was he talking about . He was talking about jobs and the economy. What are people talking about and worrying about in ohio and pennsylvania and all of those states that he said are easily going to hillary. Plump said pennsylvania is never going to happen because of the turnout in philadelphia which will be all democratic. What do the numbers say . Thats what he does. Just so if audience knows, thats what david does. He analyzes numbers. Ive known him for years. This is how they got barack obama elected by looking at the raw data. And hes good at it and a very good analyst but hes a partisan too and he does have to account for the fact that the gap in pennsylvania has been narrowed to one point. We see which way the arc is going. By a couple of adjustments by donald trump hell do better. How can he improve . Not a metaphor sis, hes not going to change fundamentally. But a few words in his head, syrian refugees, the wall, immigration, email and how about the stuff she said last night, we all have a bigotry problem. Were getting to that. My gosh all mighty. I know you will. What about releasing these people from prison. People need to take a look at the dealers with bigtime dealers theyre releasing from prison. His defenders say the people who are suffering in ohio, in michigan, elsewhere, they dont give two figures about trump eloquently making the argument. They know who their guy is. Thats right. So if you accept that, who are these debates for . I mean who is at stake . Well, they are certainly for undecideds and theyre to ensure the base and to bring the base out. But i do think it matters when you say things that resonate with the base. And i think he said some things last night that do. Again, on jobs and the economy, its not just ohio, its pennsylvania as well and other states. So i think thats important. And he got her, i think, a couple of good times on her record, just exactly what is she offering this country. What you saw in him was a lot of passion and a lot of worry of where the country is and where it should be going. And he matches the National Mood much better than she does. One thing david did not talk about is writing direction, wrong direction. Thats a big point. Another phrase he could bring up. He had her on the ropes on tpp. He had done his home work, had the record, she denied it but the facts are there. Bill, always a pressure. Thanks, megyn. Six weeks exactly until election day. Feels like its been a long time. And with the candidates in a daeds heat, larry sabato is next. Critics today accusing lester holt of being harder on trump than he was on mrs. Clinton. You cant win as the debate moderator. Well take a look at the evidence next. And then well speak with a woman at the center of one of the hottest controversies to come out of last night, Alicia Machado joins us to detail what really happened between her and mr. Trump during the wake of a Miss Universe pageant. There were two ways, termination or work with her. We want to work with her. Like a human fingerprint, no two whale flukes are the same. Right, yes, yay, heres to the end of the race. Its coming. And donald trump and Hillary Clinton are locked in a neck and neck race right now according to polls released just ahead of last nights showdown. The quinnipiac poll shows mrs. Clinton with a onepoint lead over mr. Trump, her lead jumps to 4 points with the Bloomberg Politics poll putting mr. Trump ahead by two points. History suggests a winning first debate performance isnt necessarily a sign of things to come. Two of the past three losing president ial candidates saw a bump in their polls after the first debate but ultimately went on to lose in november. Joining me now, larry sabato. Great to see you. Good evening, megyn. Is there anything we need to know about that, the fact that youve got john kerry who erased a seven percentage point with the first debate, mitt room my erased a four percentage point deficit, lost the election by four points. Well two points. Theres a reason why we have three debates. You know, we just had part one. Weve got part two and part three. I leave aside the Vice President ial debate for the moment. So the story line can change and the candidates with improve their performance or deteriorate, depending on what they have learned from the first debate. And the other thing, megyn, that i think is very very important, there are fundamentals in any election that probably matter more than the debate. The thing that helps donald trump the most and has helped him all year long is hes the change agent. Weve had two terms of one party and in modern times, we like to switch parties after eight years. Thats what in part has propelled trump forward. Notice how much he tried to make Hillary Clinton the status quo candidate. She fought back trying to make the issue donald trump. And well see in the next two debates. What did you make of David Plouffes analysis on pennsylvania. He thinks that an impossibility for donald trump. I never say anything is impossible. Im a lot older than David Plouffe thats why i never say anything is impossible. 100 chance that Hillary Clinton is elected, god bless him. I wouldnt want to risk my savings op one election vote. Is pennsylvania tough for republicans . Of course. They havent carried it since 88. Its within a point. Its one poll. The polling averages are about three but it can change overnight. Im not saying it cant be done. Im just saying its tough. I certainly wouldnt say its impossible. Larry, a pleasure. To be continued. Thank you, megyn. As we track the fallout from last nights debate, one of the big stories involved the moderator, what a shock. The moderator is getting beaten up again, nbcs lester holt. Some suggesting that holt preshed mr. Trump more than he did mr. Clinton. The audit of your taxes the youre perfectly free to release your taxes during an audit. Mr. Trump for five years you perpetuated a false claim that the americas first black president was not a citizen. Can you tell us what took so long. Were talking about racial healing in this segment 37 what do you say to americans i say nothing. A lot of these are judgment questions. You had supported the war in iraq before the invasion. Wait a minute. I was against the war in iraq. Just so you put it out. The record shows otherwise. Joining me now, brent ba zel and krystal ball. I confess. I already said he did a good job but im not going to argue against you. But im going to give you the floor to make the case. All of the questions seemed fair to me. Is the argument that he didnt do it as aggressively with mrs. Clinton . No. The argument is he didnt do it at all. Heres the facts. He asked donald trump about his personal taxes. He challenged him. He asked him about stop and frisk. He challenged him. That was a Candy Crowley moment where he got it wrong. He asked him about the birther issue. He challenged him. He asked him about iran, about iraq and he questioned, interrupted him, fact checked him five or six different times. Now thats perfectly fine by me provided you do the same thing with the other side. What are the facts. He not once challenged Hillary Clinton on anything, not once asked her a tough question. And didnt even ask her anything about her controversy. Now, megyn, lets be objective here. He asked her about the email. He didnt put it in his own words but he gave mer the chance to respond to email. Exactly. Why different. No no. Let me just explain. He gave her the opportunity. I have no idea. I havent talked to lester. But this is what i think happened. You got a question on email. He must have had a question on emails for her. Youre going to get to emails with Hillary Clinton. When donald trump brings it up, y
