FOXNEWSW The Real Story With Gretchen Carlson October 24, 2014

Deblasio reiterated new yorkers should remain calm. I want to repeat what i said last night. There is no cause for alarm. New yorkers need to understand the situation is being handled and handled well. Theres no kaz for every day new yorkers to be alarmed. Rick leventhal is at the hospital where dr. Spencer is being treated. Whats the doctors condition right now . Gretchen, were told that he is stable, that he is talking on the phone, and that he is being treated, but they wont go into specifics because of privacy concerns. As you heard the mayor and other city officials continuing to reassure the public, which is understandably nervous because dr. Craig spencer has been riding on subway trains on numerous occasions. He visited numerous restaurants, and he also went bowling in brooklyn on wednesday night roughly 12 hours before calling officials to let them know he had symptoms of ebola. They say that he didnt develop his fever until thursday morning, and it was 100. 3, which is still below cdc guidelines of when someone might be contagious. Still, were told strict and scrupulous procedures were followed and have been followed. Dr. Spencer was transported to the hospital by First Responders in protective suits, and he has been quarantined. He is in isolation here at bellview hospital at this hour, gretchen. What about the other people he came in contact with, especially at that Bowling Alley, rick . Well, first of all, his fiance, who he was closest to, she lived with him, she halls also been quarantined, and he had a couple of friends that he spent time with on tuesday and wednesday. They are also in isolation. The Bowling Alley, you mentioned, it was closed as a precaution on wednesday after officials learned that he had been there. The Bowling Alley, were told, has been clean and has been cleared to reopen, but the city says theres nothing to fear from this case. We were sent here just to make sure even though we believed there was no risk here. We just came to insure that to see there was no exposure, there was no bodily fluids that were here. We have learned that we want to stand beside the owner and say theyve been cooperating fully. They closed voluntarily. Theyre taking steps beyond what we recommend to make sure that everything is safe here. And, of course, gretchen, millions of people ride the new york city subways every day. The city ssz the subways are also safe. They say ebola can only survive on hard surfaces for a few hours. There is no indication that dr. Spencer was contagious when he was riding the subways and no indication that he emitted any bodily fluids when he was on the subway, so they say no new yorkers should be nervous when they ride this train today. Okay. Thanks for the update. Rick leventhal, live at bellview. Worried about the governments ability, though, to respond to the crisis . Scenes like this not inspiring confidence. Officers near that doctors home were seen flowing their mask masks and gloves in a public trash can. Though its unlikely that those officers were inside the apartment or even touched anything. Its still raising some eyebrows. Trash sorters and other people do rummage through that sort of stuff. Some good news in the fight against ebola. Nina pham released from the hospital todaafter being declared free of the ebola virus. Pham will be meeting with president obama. Thats going to happen right now at the white house. Shes one of the two nurses, as you recall, which contracted ebola while treating thomas drunkan, the liberian man who died earlier in the month. This means she can soon be home with that little guy, her dog, bentley. The cavalier king charles spaniel tested negative for the virus. Vets tell us the adorable little pooch is doing great. So should doctors returning from treating ebola patients in africa be under some kind of mandatory quarantine here in the u. S. Or in africa . Doctor at nyu school of medicine, and my guest. Good to have you on, doctor. Nice to see you, grechern. Apparently starting monday there will be new guidelines from the cdc saying just what i said. This sort of selfmonitoring quarantine from people returning from ebola affected countries. Is that a good idea, or should they just stay in africa and stay quarantined there before they come back to the u. S. . I think both things make sense. If they stay in west africa at least in an area thats free of ebola, then at least we can feel a little bet more confident when they come back either to the u. S. Or to other countries. I mean, people travel. There are a lot of relief workers from other countries as well. I mean, i think either way they need to have leer guidelines about what the quarantine is and if we do it here, we need to have some type of quarantine support team, so a team that would go give people food or get their errands done or talk to their employer about how they have to remain in quarantine to make it ease wrer. Weve had several stories that people were in selfimposed quarantine, but they were still going outside, so they really werent in the quarantine. Thats the most concerning part. People not necessarily taking the quarantine as seriously as we want them to. Its because the medical field seems to be split on this quarantine. If you read articles in the last 24 hours, some are saying this doctor was fine. He wasnt contagious. The minute that he was, he wasnt in contact with anybody, and he called the hospital, and they dealt with it. Others are saying, you know, just for peace of mind, he should have done this for 21 days. Well, i agree. I dont think those things are contradictory, actually. So for him he didnt have symptoms when he went to the Bowling Alley or went on the subway, but if you think about the optics, how people feel thinking about it, you know, it is very concerning when you hear that someone who has ebola was using mass transit, was exposing, you know, all these people potentially to ebola. To be clear, i dont think anybody in new york has to worry about this case, but if you think about the future, what if somebody was really sick and doing these things . We should have a plan in place for that. Bellview is the hospital that he went to. Its one of the places that is supposedly prepared for ebola. I know you know testing these places for a couple of months. The hospitals in new york are all preparing for people being aware of ebola and being aware in that sense. Center centers are preparing in temz of treating patients. Bellview is one of them. I think the things that are reassuring here are that in terms of the training, you know, heave had fake patients coming in in terms of practicing what would we do in this case . Then they have feedback session wheres they figure out, okay, where do we make mistakes and what do we do to correct it . Also, theyve had internet communities where people can ask questions within the hospital. If you have a question, you get an answer pretty quickly, and you have an established authority. Like a command within the hospital to figure out what to do. I think those things are all reassuring. You cant tell if were prepared until we actually face the challenge, but i definitely think that those things are reassuring. Yomg what people have to woerp about in their daily lives, this is not the number one thing there, but in terms of how we see these missteps or, you know, judgment calls where it could have actually gone they could have gone a better route, i think thats whats really making people worry about it a lot more. All right. Dr. Debbie, great to have you on today. Thanks. Thanks. The ebola crisis taking center stage today in d. C. As house lawmakers blast the obama administrations response to the crisis. Chief Congressional Correspondent Mike Emmanuel live for us on capitol hill. Lawmakers did not get to hear from the president s new ebola czar, ron klain. Why not . Well, thats right, gretchen. Four hours of questions of Administration Officials and some outside experts. Ron klain, the newly appointed ebola czar was invited to attend, but he declined the invitation, and there was some disappointment amongst house lawmakers for him not showing up. There are also some lawmakers expressing concerns why the white house did not choose a doctor to serve in that role. Now, i want the record to be complete on why in the world a president picked a dag gone lawyer to head the ebola crisis instead of somebody with your vast and varied background. Congressman gabby followed up by saying when theres an opening on the supreme court, you can bet that president obama is not going to nominate a doctor to serve in that role. Some other officials defended klains qualifications. He just started in the job on wednesday, and you can bet that he will be invited to testify before congress again, gretchen. All right. Leave it to politicians to have the good oneliners. How concerned did some of the witnesses sound today . They did sound very concerned. You have the Homeland Security internal watchdog, the Inspector General who said despite the fact that congress had appropriated 47 million years ago for Homeland Security to prepare for a possible pandemic, he said that they had botched those preparations. Meanwhile, he also had a defense official expressing these concerns. The ebola emdemmic we face is a National Security issue. Absence our coordinated response in west africa, the virus is increasing spread brings the risk of more cases here in the united states. Now, after that fourhour hearing, some lawmakers are calling for an automatic 21day quarantine. We will see if that gains some sort of traction. Gretchen. Mike emmanuel live on capitol hill. Thanks, sir. Time for my take now. Theres no doubt that dr. Craig spencer was doing heroic work when he traveled to help ebolastricken patients in guinea, and it appears when he came back home to the u. S. And to new york city, that he didnt really violate in the rules, but my question today is more about commonsense. I dont know about you, but if i had just been in contact with ebola victims in south africa where the disease is widespread, handling their bodily fluids and treating them, i probably wouldnt just assume that everything was going to be aokay with me. Wouldnt it be prudent, maybe responsible to selfquarantine even if the cdc didnt slightly require it . If physicians treating ebola patients dont know and understand that, who would . I was just looking for a little commonsense. Coming up on the real story the war against isis rages on in the middle east. Now there are concerns those militants could be rallying for attacks on our soil through the internet. Weve seep the lone wolf attacks, but are more on the way . Does that make it a pack . Plus, lawmakers in canada back to work after just two days, two days after that deadly attack on Canadas Parliament hill. What they are doing now to try to prevent another attack. And a man with a hatchet tries to chop down two nypd officers. So was this crime an act of terrorism . Were going to debate all that coming up next. Big day . Ah, the usual. Moved some new cars. Hauled a bunch of steel. Kept the supermarket shelves stocked. Made sure everyone got their latest gadgets. Whats up for the next shift . Ah, nothing much. Just keeping the lights on. laugh nice. Doing the big things that move an economy. See you tomorrow, mac. See you tomorrow, sam. Just another day at norfolk southern. Feet. Tiptoeing. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take. One pill, twice daily, xeljanz can reduce ra pain and help stop further joint damage, even without methotrexate. Ask about xeljanz. Killing a soldier. The canadian government now planning to introduce legislation to boost police and Intelligence Services powers to try and counterterrorist threats. Proposals include around the clock guard for the prime minister, an order for all members of the Canadian Military to avoid wearing their uniforms in public while doing things like shopping or eating out. Time for real talk about the war on terror after yet another lone wolf attack. This one on the streets of new york city. Wounding 260 others. The brutal assaulted of a british soldier near his barracks. In australia last month authorities foiled a plot by isis to behead a citizen. It is deadly attack at the war memorial in ottawa, and just yesterday the hatchet assault here in new york city. So is this the new face of terrorism . Buck sexton is National Security editor with the blaze. K. T. Mcfarland is our fox news National Security analyst. Great to have the both of you. K. T. , let me start with you. The new face of terrorism. This lone wolf attack kind of setup, but does it make it a pack of wolves when you add it all together . Well, the problem is ten years ago we were told al qaeda, they dont want to establish a state. They just want to plan big attacks in america. We prevented those from happening. Again, then the next round was this summer. Well, isis, the new al qaeda, they just want to control a country and a region. Theyre not going to attack us here. But now the new thing is they dont even need to recruit someone who goes and fights, gets the training, and comes back to america. Toipt read this to you, because this is from isis. If you can kill a disbelieving american or european, especially thats spiteful and filthy french or an australian or canadian, smash his head with a rock or slaughter him with a knife, or run him over with your car or throw him down from a high place, or choke him, or poison him. Thats isiss call for action, and some of those things are exactly what have happened in the last few days. Thats exactly right. Isis has been calling for this with more efficacy mostly because of the slick social media campaign. They really understand how to use digital mediums to reach people, whether this nir basements or whenever to look for the disaffected that might take them up on this. This has been happening stretching back for many years. This idea of making jihad the cyber jihad. Got a fox news alert to report right now. Watchdog group contains thousands of documents that led to the 2010 murder of Border Patrol agent brian terri. Despite the fact president obama claimed executive privilege. Willy live in downtown l. A. Where attorney general eric holder is expected to speak shortly. William, what did you find in this list of documents . Well, fwrechen, Judicial Watch sued to get all the documents over which the president claimed executive prif. The staigs fought that, and this is a shortterm solution. Basically they got a list of some 15,000 documents which the president claims were used in the executive decision making. Socalled liberative documents. Yet, there are 23 emails between the attorney general and his wife. Seven more emails between attorney general holder and his mother. Critics will say theres no way those should be protected under executive privilege. Also, some speculate that he may have been using their email to hide the communications from the public. Other documents show while the president , of course, claimed he knew nothing about fast and furious until it was reported in the press, yet white house official tells kevin oreilly, his name came up 138 times, and there are email exchanges between white house advisor valley jarrett and eric holder. The attorney general shows the documents that he was directly involved with damage control. Also, theres a march 2011 document, three months after brian terris death where u. S. Attorney eric burke was discussing fast and furious weapons with his deputies. Yet, one day later he lied to the terry family and claimed that none of the guns found at the crime scene belonged to fast and furious. Finally, in february 2011 the chief of the department of justice, wrote to atf about a Personnel Matter one day after whistle blower john dodson exposed fast and furious, and then, of course, it led to a campaign to discredit dodson. Today there have been lets go to a soundbyte i think we have from Judicial Watch. Sfla this is eric holders legacy. Eric holder himself have said the fast and furious guns would show up at crimes for years to come. So its important we find out what went on, and its really outrageous that theyre withholding information about what the president knew, what the administration knew, and when they knew it today there are about four were sent to mexico and thehly administration held had been acc
