Symbol, if you will, for Union Leaders trying to make a political point with income equality and campaign for a living wage. They say no less than 15 an hour. The irony is many Union Workers under Union Contracts negotiated by the union make about the same amounting. Now, the scrutiny, however, is on walmart and the media attention. Some of the people you see in green here are actually walmart workers taking the day off. Others are members of the union who have been bussed in from here around the country and long beach as well as atlanta, chicago, washington, d. C. , demonstrations there as well. The argument is that the founders of walmart are rich and they have a duty to give their workers more. They pay for Health Care Benefits to increased hours and pay at least 15 an hour. How could anybody survive on 12 to live and eat . I was starving. Ive lost 60 pounds in less than a year and id beg for more hours and theyd say follow your schedule, we cant do anything about it, with a snicker. And thats why i stand up and thats why i fight. Reporter but is anyone listening . Walmart says perception is not reality. They had 22 million shoppers as of this morning. People coming in to buy 65inch televisions for 650. They had an awesome black friday. That 75 of todays managers began as Sales Associates and more than 300,000 workers have been with the company for more than ten years. I cant tell you about over there, but i can tell you walmart has been good to me. I came here about a year ago and started off as a Customer Service cashier. Then i went to a Sales Associate in electronics and then i became a manager within six months. Reporter this is very much, charles, a political rally as well. Theyre asking people to sign up for a living wage drks 15 an hour, across los angeles. Not to mention that some Union Leaders are making half a Million Dollars a year. That contradiction was not brought up here. Thanks, william. Of course all of these protester, do they really work for walmart . Didnt look like it there. Neil tried to get to the bottom of it on wednesdays show. Lets get your thoughts on what you think is going on here. What do you think it is . Well, our walmart is a wholly owned subsidiary of the united food workers union. Its the ufcw organization. Theyre hiring union employees, giving gift cards, offering people 200 in free thanksgiving turkeys in denver and chicago to protest. These are simply paid street protests and theyre trying to achieve their ultimate goal, which is to unionize walmarts 1. 3 million employees. Kim, welcome to the show. I think you heard the criticism there. We were watching some live shots today. Ive got to tell you, i didnt see anyone in that crowd that looked like a walmart employee. Well, there are walmart employees at many of the protests around the country. I was at two protests today, and ours was primarily church people, synagogue people. We had priests there, we had people and we were leading prayers and praying both for workers and for the management at walmart. We believe, im the director of interfaith worker justice, we believe that to those who much is given, much is expected. And so we believe that the Largest Company in america could pay people 15 an hour. That they could and they should. But you work for the organization, the union. Youre not a walmart employee yourself. No, i do not work for the union. I am a faith leader with interfaith worker justice. We are partnering with our walmart and other Community Organizations in supporting what these workers are asking for. But, no, im a faith leader with inner faith worker justice and we did two prayer vigils at walmart today and we had maybe 300 around the country that were prayer vigils, primarily people of faith. Let me get in here a moment. I appreciate the prayers that you guys gave. But wouldnt you say 1. 4 million jobs answers a lot of prayers . How could you be down on a company when millions of people have nothing, millions of people around the world have nothing, how can you upset at a company who provides employment for 1. 4 Million People . I am glad theyre providing jobs and they could pay decent wages. This company is consolidating money. They had 16 billion in profits. They could share that with their workers. You understand that their workers arent working for free. The idea that you can determine how much money walmart can pay, to be quite frank, is really none of your business. Now, we just had a woman on from walmart whos been there six months. She is joyed, she is thrilled out of her mind at the upward mobility shes already enjoyed. Why would you try to wreck Something Like that . Why cant we just let the free market work . Well, the free market is not working for low wage workers right now. And Companies Like walmart can either drive down wages and standards or they could help raise them and thats what we need this company to do. Im glad there are Good Companies out there, but this company could pay workers 15 an hour and it would be good for workers, it would be good for the long run for this company and it would be good for the economy. Because right now taxpayers are helping subsidize these workers because walmart is not paying enough. Some would argue walmart is helping subsidize Welfare Benefits and the government too. Kim, we appreciate you praying for everyone but we want to the to the other side of the story a Great Holiday and great weekend. Thank you, charles. Vinny is not buying it. Hes with the mackinaw center. You heard the story. We know the story. You know, listen, these all these organizations are backed by unions. Unions see 1. 4 million workers and it is so tantalizing to them. If they could get those 1. 4 Million People paying 40 a month, that becomes a shot in the arm unions need because america for the most part have rejected unions. Charles, here we go again. Every single thanksgiving were talking about the protests at walmart since 2012. Its always the day after, its always this massive hype. Hey, you know what, they go after walmart. Why . Because its like Willie Sutton said, thats where the money is. Youre right, this is all about the dues money. What theyre trying to do is organize walmart, use Community Groups like the woman was from that just spoke and trying to take away the ballot from employees so they can sign them up out in the open and, charles, its all about the dues. What would you say to people that say since these protests started maybe a decade ago, it has forced walmart and others to sort of step it up. The pay has gotten better, the benefits have gotten better and if not for these organizations, maybe these people would be working for 4 or 5 an hour. If not for talent, if not for Good Employer practices, if not for good employees, yeah, none of those things would have happened. But the woman earlier started at the bottom and is working her way up. Thats what the free market is all about. Thats what walmart is doing for the associates, its letting them start somewhere, giving them that experience and thats how they get raises and will get 15 and above unlike some of these other Union Employers who are making 11, 12 an hour. I think yesterday 22 Million People went to walmarts around the country so id say thats in addition to the employees 22 Million People are probably pretty happy that they exist. Having said that, we know that the protests are going to be relentless and theyre going to continue and continue and continue. We saw in the midterm elections where even socalled red states voted for higher minimum wage. Is this going to be a reality . Walmart hasnt come out going against the minimum wage. I think in some cases they have got to be for it. If you raise the minimum wage, they can raise it but the Small Business competitors cant. So on that one ive got to say im not really a fan of walmart when it comes to the minimum wage. I looked at the making change and they talk about Small Business being part of the coalition. But to your point these higher wages will hurt smaller businesses before it hurts walmart. Vinny, nice seeing you. Thanks for having me on. All the major averages are up big this month. The nasdaq up 3. 5 . The dow ending the month at a new alltime high. Notice the difference between ferguson protests earlier in the week and now. It looks like all those outside agitators went home for the holidays. And no crowds here. The administration trying to sell obamacare at malls all across the country today. Hows that working out for you . This guy looks a little bored. Wheres all the demand . Happy. In love. And saving so much money on their Car Insurance by switching to geico. Protesters shouting shut it down as the ferguson protests shifts from the streets to the stores. At the st. Louis galleria mall protesters disrupted holiday shoppers. Reporter charles, on one of the busiest shopping days of the year, you can see right now that the police are actually blocking the entranceway to this mall. They have shut down this mall at least temporarily. About 100 protesters inside protesting the Michael Brown shooting, staging a diein. They were lying on the floor and taking over some of the escalators. There was no arrests made but people inside the mall were asked to leave at least temporarily. They were calmly escorted out, no real sense of panic. When you talk to people who have been asked to leave the Shopping Mall on black friday, they are pretty much furious. The numbers of protesters have gone way down. Since the violence on monday weve seen a real decline on the outdoor protests. Last night pretty much nobody out on the streets of ferguson and no arrests made. Charles, back to you. Thanks, steve. After two days of violent protests in ferguson this week, the demonstrators were seeing today, at least they appear to be peaceful. Is it because the outside agitators took a holiday break . What do you think about what were starting to see right now . Thanks for having me shall charles. First of all, the outside agitators have played a role in this and we put forth a sevenpoint plan that said one of the things that these communities have to do is disinvite the outsiders. Tell them you are not welcome, you don not have a platform her. I think the people of the Community Want to get past the racial divide and racial animus thats been stirred up. We just need to have people in that community atropical depression the issue instead of outsiders. Who are the agitators . Can you tell us who are some of the agitators . If i live in ferguson, how do i identify them . You have people who come in with an ideological perspective and spewing a lot of rhetoric. The new black panther party, for example, comes into these situations. Frankly, al sharpton always comes into these situations and they have got to stop letting people like that come in and take over a community and set the tone. But there are a number of far left groups that come in and exploit these situations to advance their own agenda. Bishop, what do you think it is . Do you think that these communities are just broken down, that theyre spiritually so broken down that anyone can come in with a silver tongue or an everyone is against you sort of rhetoric . Why does that always seem to work . Theres a long history over the last 50 years, charles, of what i call racially obsessed people using race to manipulate the black community. This is not 1955. Michael brown, its tragic that he lost his life, but hes not emmitt till. Officer Darren Wilson is not the kkk. This is a different era. These kids need jobs, they need education, they need stable families. Instead of doing sitins and dieins at walmart, they need people working at walmart and shopping at walmart. We need people with a vision for community rather than exploiting racial division. Ive been saying as much for a long time myself. I know, ive heard you, charles. One of the issues and problems seems to be within the communities you say where is the embedded leadership or how do you call that out . In other words, we know that the lefters are going to flock there but when do the others with the other side of the message flock there as well . Charles, let me say it right now . Ive talked to pastors and say dont let your community we taken over the new black panther party, al sharpton, stand up and take the leadership that youve been given. These communities i think are able of getting past this racial animus but its going to take pastors with vision. Theyre there, charles, but they have to stand up and be heard. You know, after work on friday, my show ends at 7 00. I went over to one of the nicest restaurants in the city and in strolls al sharpton. It just hurt me that he would be in this nice beautiful restaurant while people were getting arrested thinking they were following his lead. Bishop, ive got to leave it here. Thank you for everything youre doing. Thank you, charles. If we keep letting more gitmo detainees out the former s. E. A. L. Whos had enough of it. Female announcer through thanksgiving weekend get three years interestfree financing and save up to 400 on beautyrest and posturepedic. Even get three years interestfree financing on Serta Icomfort and tempurpedic. Mattress price wars ends sunday, at sleep train. More detainees getting out at gitmo. A new report that the pentagon is preparing to transfer another round in december. No word yet on just how many, but is there anything like the seven guys that we just let out this month, we should be worried, all of them tied to al qaeda or some other terror group. Thats why Jonathan Gilliam says closing gitmo is a nono. It seems like were doing the de facto closing of gitmo. Weve gone from 800 right after 9 11 to about 143 now. Were dumping these people all over the place. Were dumping them and we know that it was something obama wanted to do when he ran for president. But you cant just say i want a place closed. You have to say who are these people who are in there and what reason are they in there . Is it good to keep them in there . Thats the question you should be asking, not just how should we close it. Whats the procedure . It feels willynilly right now. Lets just get them out until no ones left. I have a feeling you might be on to something here. Lets sneak five out here and seven out there. I think attorneys are making these decisions rather than warriors. I would rather just see a large camp set up over there where were fighting and youre a prison of war and thats what they are. Youre a prison of war. You stay there until the war is over with. If they try to escape or if they mounting some type of rescue operation, then you bring the full force of the military to that fight. The guy who started isis, we held hip at one point. He was a captive of our military. We let him go back. I would suspect these people were letting go seven, five at a time to go to other prisons, radicalize people around them, they get out, they go back and fight. How do we know how many of joined back into the war against americans . We dont. The one that you just brought up is statistic enough. This is one person that went over and then started leading an entire military army, a smaller military army of isis, but youre exactly right. Lets say its 70 out of a couple hundred. Thats still a lot. 70 people that have that kind of clout can do a lot of damage to military forces and they bring certain secrets. This is how youre going to be treated and they can do certain training so people who may be caught they really do see a good picture once they get out of there. What does this do for the troops out there that know theyre fighting but were letting these people go . I think its just another example of the administration and dod leadership that is not paying attention to the fight. When you have that, you have people that are in the fight that are saying what are we actually doing . Whos gall the plan . We may have the plan for the overall operation. And theyre giving their lives, put their lives on the line every day. Appreciate it. Oil prices plunging today. Will that get shoppers to spend more. And do you want the gift of obamacare . Check it out. No ones buying. A 3,000 incent
