GBN Breakfast July 3, 2024

Breakfast on gb news. Now ive got a friend whos got Rheumatoid Arthritis like that andifs Rheumatoid Arthritis like that and its particularly affected by the weather. And sometimes she everythings painful when its cold she just sees the. Yeah, yeah. And just doing ordinary things with your hands particularly becomes really, really painful and its Awareness Week so well be talking about that through the programme if you if you suffer from it , how do you programme if you if you suffer from it, how do you manage and in what sort of way, what sort of help is available . Yeah. And also how do you get going in the mornings . Because my auntie celia has a and she has a, she works in a lace factory for all of her life. So she really depended on her hands, but used to have to hands, but she used to have to warm them up the morning, warm them up in the morning, blast them with water or massage. Its. Yes. And yet its still painful. Think must painful. Yeah. I think it must be horrible. Minutes to get going. 20 minutes to get going. 20 minutes to get going. Awful isnt it. As oh, its awful isnt it. As if its not more difficult enough actually getting up early in and theres lots in the morning and theres lots to talk today. Going to talk about today. Were going to talk about today. Were going to bit on in to be debating a bit later on in the programme. The naughty step. Yeah. Bring up your yeah. How did you bring up your children . Your with children . Maybe your with grandchildren at the grandchildren as well at the moment you discipline moment and how do you discipline them . The naughty step i mean, in the olden days you used to smack didnt you clip round the ear. Yeah, thats right. Yeah. And thats sort of become completely unacceptable. I never completely unacceptable. I never smacked my children, i dont think. But we did use the naughty step. Yeah and funnily enough, it really works. Yeah. Enough, it really works. Yeah. Ive never hit my kids, you know, i just wouldnt go down that although there that route. Although there was discipline my house clip discipline in my house or clip round mainly, but round the ear mainly, but i definitely used the naughty definitely have used the naughty step because, you know, toddlers cant with. Theyre cant be reasoned with. Theyre like they like chimpanzees when they completely get going. I mean. I mean, to them. No mean, you cant talk to them. No you cant reason with them when theyre little and theyre throwing a tantrum. But is amazing yeah, but what is amazing about the naughty they about the naughty step is they will they will . Yeah. Will sit on it. They will . Yeah. They take that form of they will take that form of discipline. Most of the time. I just think so many parents now soft on their now are really soft on their kids. It supermarkets kids. You see it in supermarkets when kind of act out. Now i when they kind of act out. Now i smile because my kids are 14 and nine. There but the grace of nine. There but for the grace of god, was me. But i think so god, that was me. But i think so many, especially middle class parents, now. An parents, are so soft now. An whereas well i personally whereas back well i personally think causes think thats what causes an awful of problems later kids awful lot of problems later kids young people who think they can do like and do what the heck they like and they always get their way. They always get their own way. So up with a sense of so they grow up with a sense of entitlement. Naughty entitlement. I think naughty step a good place. And were talking a lot about that sort of thing today because the actor jim carter, you know, the actorjim carter, you know, the actorjim carter, you know, the butler in Downton Abbey, i didnt know married to didnt know he was married to imelda oh, yeah. But Imelda Staunton. Oh, yeah. But anyway , they are the front anyway, they are on the front page the telegraph page of the telegraph today because say and i think because they say and i think this is a great idea , they say this is a great idea, they say gardening should now be on the on the national curriculum. Brilliant idea. It should be taughtin brilliant idea. It should be taught in schools because it gets you out in the in the fresh air and its good it teaches you how to nurture something and i think thats a great idea garden ing on the national curriculum. Yeah in schools my mum was a Home Economics teacher, you know, so i was taught to cook, got to about 14 which is how old my son is now. She said, thats it, im not cooking for you anymore, take of yourself. And i it take care of yourself. And i it was thrown in at the deep end and i cooked for myself every day taught kids and i cooked for myself every da cook taught kids and i cooked for myself every dacook already. Taught kids and i cooked for myself every da cook already. You ght kids and i cooked for myself every dacook already. You know, kidss to cook already. You know, kids should be sufficient, should be self sufficient, taught reasonable, valuable life skills pure academia. So gardening could become so gardening could become part a of home economic, part of a sort of home economic, i think its a great idea. Do they home ec . They do home ec . Its mostly phased its mostly been phased out. And was a it was and because it was a it was expensive to have the kitchens and everything in the school and of Health Safety of course health and safety and in burned, well, in case you got burned, well, you know, ovens tend to be hot. Well, thats about learning. You know, ovens tend to be hot. Weiyes. Ats about learning. You know, ovens tend to be hot. Weiyes. Thats out learning. You know, ovens tend to be hot. Weiyes. Thats a|t learning. You know, ovens tend to be hot. Weiyes. Thats a very rning. You know, ovens tend to be hot. Weiyes. Thats a very important yes. Thats a very important lesson learn, isnt it . So do lesson to learn, isnt it . So do know anything about home ec, is it . Youre teacher. And it . Maybe youre a teacher. And why you up early . You why are you up early . You deserve we can watch deserve a lie in. We can watch us youre lying in. But us while youre lying in. But yeah. No, i think home ec is terribly, terribly important. And phasing it out, we and if we are phasing it out, we should phasing back in fast. And also a good thing they do in ec is budgeting so a in home ec is budgeting so a recipe costs this you can cook this portions therefore this many portions therefore budget therefore and see these are practise useful are really practise useful skills than of just skills rather than sort of just learning for the pure sake of it. Yes i quite agree. So its something we need and maybe something we all need and maybe in the olden days it was your parents that taught you how to cook and how to garden and everything. But maybe now it has to be part of school life. Well, they on youtube. Well, they go on youtube. Its very easy to learn how to do anything. Now on youtube, you can change carburettors, find anything for anything you want. No excuse for not hands dirty. Not getting your hands dirty. No, absolutely. Not getting your hands dirty. No, absuthely. Not getting your hands dirty. No, absus know you think. Let us know what you think. Vaiews gbnews. Com now, as we were saying , the Prime Minister were saying, the Prime Minister has vowed to ban american bully dogs after a man was mauled to death. Actually, a lot of people have been killed by these dogs. Thats right. And in a video message, rishi sunak said that such attacks could not be allowed to continue. Lets have a quick look at how we got to this point. How we got to this point. It out of control. Dog it out of control. Dog attacks have risen significantly in recent years, and this breed, the xl bully , was behind six of the xl bully, was behind six of ten fatal attacks in the last yeah ten fatal attacks in the last year. The xl bully, a variant of the american bully breed, is thought to have been brought to the uk in around 2014. Footage the uk in around 2014. Footage of an xl bully dog attacking people in the street in birmingham include , including an birmingham include, including an 11 Year Old Girl, prompted demands for the dog to be banned. The demands for the dog to be banned. The 11 Year Old Girl caught up in this attack and suffered shoulder and arm injuries as promoting the home secretary. Suella braverman, to seek urgent advice on a ban. On friday, it was confirmed a man in stonnall had died after an attack by two dogs, with residents suggesting that they may have been bullies. Residents suggesting that they may have been bullies. And that may have been bullies. And that was swiftly followed by this announcement from the Prime Minister. Minister. Today i have tasked ministers to bring together police and experts to firstly define the breed of dog behind these attacks with a view to then outlawing it. It is not outlawing it. It is not currently a breed defined in law, so this vital first step must happen fast. We will then ban the breed under the dangerous dogs act and new laws will be in place by the end of the year. These dogs are dangerous. I the year. These dogs are dangerous. I want to the year. These dogs are dangerous. I want to reassure dangerous. I want to reassure the public that we will take all necessary steps to keep people safe. Safe. The Dog Control Coalition, which includes the rspca , which includes the rspca, opposes the ban and has called on the government to focus on the enforcement of responsible dog ownership. Ellie costello. Dog ownership. Ellie costello. Gb news i mean, there we saw dogs on leads, but the problem is when there particularly is when theyre let off the lead. For instance, again , huge for instance, again, huge double page spread. This is a big article in the daily mail today and its about the woman you can see there who actually rescued a one of these dogs and she thought that because she believed in nurture, not nature , she believed that it wouldnt hurt her if she could train it. And love it, give it sort of love and look at the size of its head. Its resting there against her face. Its an enormous thing. Anyway. Yeah, she took it out for a walk one day, and for some reason she was with other dogs as well. For some reason it as well. For some reason it turned on her and killed her. Yeah. And theres a bloke in my local park who has one of these and it has to be said hes fairly unsavoury character and when it goes, its like hes being tugged by a tractor. He cant control the dog and hes a big grown man. Hes ploughs him along. Hes got no control over the when wants to go somewhere. Lets talk webb now, lets talk to anna webb now, whos behaviourist very whos a dog behaviourist very good anna is good morning to you. Anna is rishi sunak right there to point out that this is not out the fact that this is not a specific breed, is it . So if specific breed, is it . So if theyre going to ban them , how theyre going to ban them, how are they going to be able to prove that that is an american bully dog . Bully dog . Well, good morning, bully dog . Well, good morning , anne. Well, good morning, anne. Good morning, martin. Yes absolutely. You hit the nail on the head there. I mean, for me, this is quite a backward step. It seems like a completely run of 1991. Also remember when the bill was banned . Um, so it is bill was banned . Um, so it is hybnd bill was banned . Um, so it is hybrid dog, so it is across between various big dogs now at the moment have these cropped ears which is actually also illegal in this country. But it does sort of define their look now and these ears blocking these dogs look like many other big strong dogs that are not on the banned list and dogs that have not got injured and killed humans. So my worry and that is that many innocent dogs are now going to be seized , taken to going to be seized, taken to kennels , have to be analysed by kennels, have to be analysed by experts , and many of them will experts, and many of them will be killed for no reason. Be killed for no reason. Anna, its good to talk to you, but im afraid the sound coming from you is very , very coming from you is very, very dodgy at the moment. So were going to love you and leave you there, if you dont mind. But there, if you dont mind. But youve made that point. Yeah youve made that point. Yeah youve made that point. Yeah youve made that point very well that i think a lot of people are going to be really upset about that they they will say, well , that they they will say, well, mine isnt xl bully dog. And mine isnt an xl bully dog. And anyway cant it is. Anyway, you cant prove it is. And theyre going to say, you know, would be culling if know, you would be culling if thats what they do to an innocent dog. Innocent dog. Yeah, id be interested to find out the numbers. I mean 50 of all deadly dog attacks are by this breed. And this rose to 60 in 2022. Year, 11 confirmed in 2022. Last year, 11 confirmed fatality via this dog since 2021. And three suspects deaths there are only 1 of the dog population. So theyre not hugely popular. But still an thats a significant number of dogs that presumably would need to be destroyed. I think what dogs that presumably would need to be meroyed. I think what dogs that presumably would need to be me ised. I think what dogs that presumably would need to be me is the i think what dogs that presumably would need to be me is the factnk what dogs that presumably would need to be me is the fact thathat dogs that presumably would need to be me is the fact that you scares me is the fact that you could just be walking in the park, walking down the road if somebody has one these dogs somebody has one of these dogs and particularly if they are off the lead , then what do you do . The lead, then what do you do . You could be attacked at any point. And sadly, this has happened. Weve got so many instances of that just in todays newspaper , frankly, in todays newspaper, frankly, in front of us. Yeah people whove actually been savaged by a dog that they thought was okay or savaged by a dog, thats just sort of leapt up at them out of the blue. And its interesting how people say, oh, its not the dogs, its the owners. But i think its fair to say that these dogs seem to attract a particular type of owner generally. Not generally. Obviously not. Not not they are not exclusively. And they are gang some places, arent gang dogs in some places, arent they . And their defence dogs, you theyre a guard dog. You know, theyre a guard dog. Theyre to theyre they are there to attack. And you look at the attack. And when you look at the number is there is definitely, i think, an a compelling for think, an a compelling case for banning dogs. Banning these these dogs. Dont know what the but we dont know what the ban means. Does that mean that your dog would have to be euthanized . It probably does. Yeah. And it probably does. Yeah. And they said theyre given a grace period, werent there . Yeah. Theres going to be a grace period, like year, 18 months. But what you meant to do in that grace period, well thats planned for its guess. Planned for its death, i guess. I mean, in brutal terms, yeah. I cant see people taking that. Can you . It would be very good to hear from you whether you nature or you think its nature or nurture. These dogs are nurture. These these dogs are obviously to look and be obviously bred to look and be scary and savage and why would you want to own one anyway . I think is the question id like to know. And also, i mean, what do you think they should do . Is do you think they should do . Is it the dog or the owner whos behaving badly . But theres got to be difficult. Both. Both. Yeah. Its going to be difficult as you say, because theyll have to measured , theyll have to be measured, weighed. And very weighed. And thats very difficult mean, how difficult because, i mean, how how a crossbreed are how much of a crossbreed are they . Its going to be a real i think, you know, sort of in terms the bureaucracy, terms of the bureaucracy, its going massive. Going to be massive. Yeah, absolutely. Do let us know what your views are on that. I can it views are on that. I can see it dividing people gb dividing people terribly. Gb views news news. Com and well views gb news news. Com and well move on to another big story of the day, and thats lucy letby. The day, and thats lucy letby. Now she has filed an application to appeal against her convictions and letby was handed 14 whole life orders last month for murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others. Well, joining us now from outside Manchester Crown court is our north west of england. Reporter sophie reaper. Morning, sophie. What do we know so far is going on . Well, good morning to you both. Well, its been 29 days now since lucy letby was found guilty of seven murders and seven counts of attempted murder. And we now know that she hasindeed murder. And we now know that she has indeed made a formal bid to appeal against those convictions last month, she earned the title of the worst serial killer of children in modern british history with justice goss, the judge presiding over the case, telling her you acted in a way thatis telling her you acted in a way that is completely contrary to the normal human instinct of nurture , knowing and caring for nurture, knowing and caring for babies. He nurture, knowing and caring for babies. He thus sentenced to her a whole life order which should mean she would spend the rest of her life in prison. However we have heard from the court of appeal staff that she she and her legal team have now made an application in to try and overturn all 14 of those convictions that she was found guilty of here at Manchester Crown court. Now this isnt as simple a process as just making an appeal. Instead, theyve had to make an application to do so , which will now be reviewed by a judge without a formal hearing. If that is then refused. And. If that is then refused. And then lucy letby is within her rights to ask for that, to then go to a formal hearing and have it reviewed by typically 2 to 3 judges. So its often a lengthy and complex process. So it could be quite a while before we know a if the application to appeal is successful and b, if it is successful, what that then means for lucy letby Going Forward. For lucy letby Going Forward. And its just a continuation of the awful agony that the parents and the survivors have gone through and, you know, its just dragging it out all over again, isnt it . Absolutely. And i think that has been at the heart of the Crown Prosecution Service of Cheshire Police of the courts, making sure that the families feel that they are acknowledged throughout this entire process. Of course, not only this now, we still have the statutor
