And so we decided to invite Dame Carolyn Mccall in for a separate meeting so that we could cover off all those issues. And this other really important bit of pre legislative scrutiny doesnt get overwhelmed by whats been going on at itv. So what are you hoping to get to find out. 7 what are you hoping to find out . What are you hoping to get ttom find out . What are you hoping to get ttom ttt find out . What are you hoping to get from it. 7 you find out . What are you hoping to get from it. 7 you know, t it . What are you hoping to get from it. 7 t t. Get from it. 7 you know, so mean. Its not a witch hunt. You know, its not a witch hunt. You know, i dont really want to sort of get into the weeds of the individual cases around around. Philip schofield but that case has raised some genuine concerns , learns about Workplace Culture , about things like potential abuses of power. We know that among some of these big Public Service broadcasters , they have service broadcasters, they have these kind of gods of broadcasting. You know, these big celebrity media stars who have a disparate , passionate and have a disparate, passionate and very large amount of influence. And its just really important to ensure that theres the right safeguard in place to make sure that that influence isnt used to disproportionately affect the careers of other younger Staff Members , that theres the right members, that theres the right systems and processes in place to protect staff who work at the organisation. And its the same organisation. And its the same for any organisation. But within the media there are there is this sort of disproportionate split of power. If you like, but also its been become apparent over the last few days that there are a number of attempts to draw attention to this , to to draw attention to this, to itv bosses. So do they have the right systems and processes in place for whistleblowers. 7 are complaints being taken seriously . Complaints being taken seriously. 7 and then finally, i had a letter from Dame Carolyn Mccall earlier this week saying that they have appointed a barrister, an independent barrister , to an independent barrister, to look into this, but it hasnt set out what the terms of reference are for that inquiry. It hasnt set out the timescale and there are a number of it almost sort of posed more questions than it answered. And thats why we really want to try and get to the bottom of some of the concerns that the committee have. Caroline, what would you say have. Caroline, what would you toy to have. Caroline, what would you toy to poooto have. Caroline, what would you say to people who caroline, what would you say to people who said that . You, say to people who said that . You, you say to people who said that . Well, you know, say to people who said that . Well, you know, unlike the bbc out well, you know, unlike the bbc out uuttto well, you know, unlike the bbc out uutttou well, you know, unlike the bbc and unlike4 itvs and unlike channel 4 itvs a tomato and unlike channel 4 itvs a private company and unlike channel 4 itvs a private company may be subject totou private company may be subject totou uto private company may be subject to law like everybody else. To the law like everybody else. Out to the law like everybody else. And therefore to the law like everybody else. And therefore its to the law like everybody else. And therefore its not really the and therefore its not really the business and therefore its not really the business of and therefore its not really the business of a parliamentary ootoot the business of a Parliamentary Select Committee the business of a Parliamentary Select Committee be looking select committee to be looking at select committee to be looking ottutomot at its entire internal procedures at its entire internal procedures. in . At its entire internal procedures. Yeah, i mean, at its entire internal procedures. Yeah, i mean, i at its entire internal procedures. Yeah, i mean, i can procedures. Yeah, i mean, i can ihave procedures. Yeah, i mean, i can i have heard that argument, phil and what i would say in response is that itv is also a Public Service broadcasting broadcaster. Our committee and the public at large. I think , the public at large. I think, feel that there is its really important that they do have a duty of care towards their staff, that this is a matter regard , issues of safeguarding regard, issues of safeguarding regarding issues of complaint handling. And thats of high importance. And the public must have confidence in Public Service broadcasters to make sure that they are robustly safeguarding the interests of their staff. So i do think this is something that both the committee and the public at large concerns with. Large do have concerns with. Unfortunately the itv do not have a very good track record over the last few years , weve over the last few years, weve had incidents with with love island, with caroline flack, terrible , tragic incidents. Terrible, tragic incidents. Weve had the jeremy kyle show, you know, there seemed to be lurching from one tragic disaster to another. And i do feel that its time that Carolyn Mccall came before the committee and answered a few questions. Okay. Can i can i also ask what the okay. Can i can i also ask what the process okay. Can i can i also ask what the process to okay. Can i can i also ask what the process is going cit q can i can i also ask what the process is going to be . Is tuto the process is going to be . Is ttto tutt the process is going to be . Is ttto yuot goug the process is going to be . Is this just going to the process is going to be . Is this just going to be a one off ovttouoo this just going to be a one off evidence session this just going to be a one off evidence session with itv, or you evidence session with itv, or you gotug evidence session with itv, or you gotug to evidence session with itv, or are you going to be producing a report are you going to be producing a report on are you going to be producing a report on tho are you going to be producing a report on the back are you going to be producing a report on the back of this ovttouoo report on the back of this evidence session with your oououottou evidence session with your conclusions about whats happening conclusions about whats happening ot conclusions about whats happening or is it just going to be happening or is it just going to to o happening or is it just going to to o otto happening or is it just going to to o ott happening or is it just going to be a one off standalone session 7 at be a one off standalone session 7 at the be a one off standalone session . At the moment, be a one off standalone session . At the moment, its be a one off standalone session . At the moment, its just a one off standalone session. It was really because we have the, as i say, the draft media bill coming before us on tuesday and there was real worry that that would was a real worry that that would be overwhelmed by the be completely overwhelmed by the committee with questions about whats going on at itv. And whats been going on at itv. And that then allow that that would then not allow that piece important legislation piece of important legislation to properly scrutinised. So to be properly scrutinised. So i thought was important to have thought it was important to have a meeting a standalone meeting with Carolyn Mccall. I hoped do it Carolyn Mccall. I hoped to do it on same day, but she wasnt on the same day, but she wasnt available. She gave us an available. But she gave us an alternative which weve alternative date, which weve taken moment theres taken, but at the moment theres no the itv themselves are doing an independent inquiry. No the itv themselves are doing an independent inquiry. Well an independent inquiry. Well keep on that. And then if keep an eye on that. And then if more, work necessary in more, more work is necessary in the future, then of course well do it. But, know, im not do it. But, you know, im not i dont want to sort of disproportion use the committees time for this, but there certainly there are certainly some unanswered if unanswered questions. And if other people wanted to come and give evidence about whats been going you would you going on, would you would you would consider reopening it would you consider reopening it and doing something bigger on it, or are you just literally just going to speak to the chief executive and you dont really want to open up any further want to open it up any further than that at the moment . Well, i mean, i think im phil, mean, i think im as ever, phil, you know, really keen that you know, im really keen that this committee serves the interests of the british people and parliament. If people have evidence that they want to share with me via via my email address, theyre very welcome to send and if and i feel send it in. And if and if i feel that that would warrant a, you know, inquiry, then of know, a full inquiry, then of course what we will at course thats what we will do at some point in the future. Ive got quite a ive got quite a backlog things that the backlog of things that the committee looking at. Weve committee is looking at. Weve got gambling paper got the gambl
