Brouhaha with the Secret Service one out one in and the allegation is that he found out about it on c.n.n. Let's find out if that's accurate with then Emmett retired Secret Service agent author of within arm's length and I'm a Secret Service Agent My Life spent protecting the president how you doing Dan I'm doing well how are you today I'm doing very well always good to talk to you so I need you it's been a while it has been a while so I mean I love having you on giving insight you were Secret Service agent for 3 presidents for 2 Bushes and a Clinton and we'll get into some of those stories but our 1st I want your out your reaction about the removal of Randolph tax Ailes who we think was removed by Trump and then found out about it on c.n.n. . Yeah you know this is one of those things that I would really read a great deal into it with this president of generals was not actually fired he was he was told several weeks ago that the shake up was coming and he had plenty of time to clean out his desk and look for a successor if you want to look at being fired and the federal government look at dance call me you know he actually discovered that he was fired by watching television but it was in the Los Angeles field up right right so there's a considerable difference between what happened. To James Comey which is a firing and general als which was a decision on the president's part to realign the Department of Homeland Security so talking about that as far as him being removed they had this breach in Mar a Lago with this train when it came in and now we're finding out the large number of electronic devices including malware and thumb drive and a bunch of other stuff at the at this point. I mean not good stuff this looks like spy stuff and external hard drive laptops thumb drives malware listening devices signal detector another cell phone 9 u.s.b. Drives 5 sim cards cash Democratic cards in her name if you had to guess what that's of how that is not a vacation in America I'm guessing right now it's not in my opinion and it's only one person's opinion who actually worked in the intel community for a while over at the agency that the People's Republic of China intel service is one of the most aggressive in the world probably the most aggressive in the world and in my view this individual probably came from that organization she was probably sent to mar Largo her actual mission I don't know that may never be made public but my concern as a former Secret Service agent is simply that perhaps the Chinese sent her to see how far within the parameters of security she could get before she was apprehended in other words maybe she had no salacious intent but in terms of physical physically harming the president but wanted to see maybe how close she could get to him or on the cyber end of it how far she could get before perhaps implant think some of those devices with then the electronic systems of Mar-A Lago So before we get to her and how far she got the question is the fact that a she was caught Ok. As you're saying she may have tested but this is like a pretty obvious deal what's interesting is that the Secret Service put out a statement kind of thrown some shade on Mar-A Lago saying we don't decide who gets in we just have to deal with who live there lead in the she got past the 1st desk you got to 1st 1st level of security she was driven by a cart into reception so she got into Mar a Lago she should have never gotten even that far with the story that she had and she was claiming she couldn't speak English and cetera now when she was in her hearing they said she was very astute spoke multiple languages etc So 2 things Number one the throwing shade at the president Mar-A Lago you think was there was retaliation based on that and we surprised that the Secret Service even did anything related to that because they're usually pretty quiet about this stuff and number 2 the fact that she was such a booby getting caught I mean this was something so obvious when she got there that almost anybody should be able to shut her down why would they do something so obvious if they wanted to get in town again maybe she wasn't there to get and tell as much as just to see how far she could get the devices she had on her might have been sort of a red herring to take attention away from what she was really trying to do with the Chinese it's very hard to tell they are they have a certain way of operating but I don't believe that she was just some lunatic or crazy person who happen to be from the p.r.c. I think she was sent and I think she had a very specific mission you know what that mission was the agency the f.b.i. And the Secret Service will have to figure that out and maybe they already have. There's a good possibility they have that we just don't know it's all right perhaps we never will so then how hard is it to protect the president's President if at a Mar-A Lago I mean that must prove almost impossible I mean based on people coming up to him club members had Sure vetted but they can bring friends and relatives their lead swimming etc And again. They kind of threw a little bit ashamed at the White House saying Well this is who they bring in we don't make the list. But whenever you take the president to a private club you're dealing with an entirely set of new set of dynamics or different set than you are at the White House or at a venue that is controlled exclusively by the Secret Service this goes back to you know even when he was Candidate Trump you know living and working in Trump Towers so the Secret Service had to deal with put private security in that situation and denim are Largo they have private security also because remember when he's not there there still has to be security in place because he might return virtually at any moment but it's very difficult it's a balancing act the Secret Service and places like that they have to walk a fine line they can't be too heavy handed because you have people who are paying you know hundreds of thousands of dollars to belong to this club so you really don't want to strongarm them nevertheless So what you want to go another place is he's not there he's away for a couple of weeks and there are members going there as they always do just to do their thing and somebody comes in as a guest remembering their vetted so we could stick a device I mean they're allowed to roam free and then when the president comes they have to do a total sweep of every inch of the place assuming that somebody may have done something in the interim sweeps are ongoing you know they never really end up matter where the president goes so you know you know when after he leaves then they revert back to a certain level of security certainly not as high high as the one when he's there but when they know he's coming back then yeah you've got explosive ordnance disposal teams canine teams that are going to go back in there and look for anything that might have been placed subsequent to his last stay there got it and there may be a connection also to this other woman's Cindy Yang who was there take a picture with took a picture with him to Super Bowl and she said she was arranging contacts and trip. To meet. It in Tamara long ago and actually have contact with the president we don't know if there's a connection there but the president called this a fluke situation does that concern you. Well the entire situation concerns me the way the security is done today is it's a little different than in my time we were a little more heavy handed in the old days. It's just a different era now so one thing I can tell you about the Chinese is that they're capable of anything don't put anything past them and believe absolutely nothing they tell you so when you have she visiting and he's going to Largo and he goes to the men's room you go to sleep after he's in there we don't know what he's brought and correct. It's a challenge let's put it that. You know these guys and girls today that are protecting him they have their hands full agents have always had their ANCYL protecting presidents but let me put it this way every president going back to Theodore Roosevelt when this all started protecting presidents they all present their own specific set of challenges when they come into office depending upon things they like to do outside the office friends that they like to surround themselves with places they'd like to go. There's in the Secret Service adapts to it you know simper company you have to be extremely flexible when you're on the presidential detail because things change by the minute they have been because you also have to have a relationship with the president talking a Democrat card Secret Service agent author of within arm's length and I'm a Secret Service agent my wife's been for taking the president aren't you the guy who went into the to meet Clinton came down you met him you're not supposed to talk much and you went out the door but when the wrong door in the other comes back into the Oval Office and he was looking at you like what the hell are you doing and you had to make it sound or kind of look like you knew your your doing. I was new to this it was one of my 1st days on the presidential detail I've been an agent for 11 years but I was new to the working shift and the internal layout of the White House around the oval so yes one morning after escorting him into the Oval Office I exit the door that I thought went out into the hallway across from the Roosevelt room and found myself private dining room and. In order to get back to running to go I chose the option of going back through the same door and back into the old and that's when I met a somewhat annoyed or irritated looking President Clinton who looked at me like what in the hell are you doing here I didn't call you what you want why where you're in my office again and Secret Service guys don't communicate with the president I mean you're supposed to give brief answers if they ask you something and that's it you're not supposed to give your opinion your insight your analysis your judgment calls correct you're supposed to be there and a sentry on watch basically make sure he's Ok or she corrects correct the average agent the every day standard issue Secret Service agent on the presidential detail never initiate a conversation with the president you simply respond to anything he might say you might say good morning sir but you don't certainly don't engage in any in-depth conversation with him those conversations are reserved really exclusively for the head of the detail the 1st the agent that is within arm's length of the president at all times they have somewhat of a different more in-depth more more personal relationship that the work rank and file agents to the other thing that's insane about your job knowing what I know about sleep and sleep cycles and circadian rhythms you guys do I think a week gone like day shift or 2 weeks day shift then 2 weeks of night shift and then a week of training and then you start all over again you must be upside down as far as a you're circadian rhythms be your family and trying to get in some kind of schedule like that Billy have a graduation this week or did I forget right and also there's a high divorce rate with Secret Service and I think you're going to pointed out that being single has its advantages when you're in Secret Service. All of those things are true 1st of all when a concerning sleep sleep is something that you do after you die when you're a part of the presidential detail you really don't get that wrapped up about it because you have to do so much so many things without it for so long it's one reason that presidential protection is for the young only someone who is in the prime of their health prime of their life can really put up with the sleep cycle deprivation and changes in the cycle. The family situation it's tough you know when you're on the presidential detail you have a family but it's really the secret service you can still have a family you can have a wife you can have kids but you never see them. You're with your Secret Service family a lot more than you're with your or your spouse or your kids so that the White House really becomes your home and your home you're paying the mortgage on is really just where you hang your suits and you show up from time to time to see what's going on I'm also assuming than that you're going to take stuff to your death because you've got to you know to hear stuff and see stuff in in private that you never be revealed collector I mean you get to really see the personalities of the future under all kinds of duress in all kinds of situations that others don't have any kind of access to. Presidents become really amusing to our presidents they become so used to us that they they really do conduct their lives as if we're not there so you do you see things you hear things that you would say to yourself gee I can't read I can't believe you just set that right with me standing here but that's the level of trust that the president has and his age is that you're not going to go out and repeat those things so there are 2 levels of it one you sign a non-disclosure agreement when you leave the details saying you will never disclose any classified information that you saw that you heard that you were in the presence of the other level is just simply one of respect for the office of the presidency that you don't talk about personal things that you saw the president do or hear him say even though it may not be classified it would be an embarrassment to him and his family so you stay away from those things what about the level at which they're working now and on 2015 the House Oversight Committee issued a long report United States Secret Service saying that about misconduct etc and they were also in 2015 an alert that the agents were overworked and that they were fatigued and there was a big morale problem which is not something we hear about people who are protecting President and are supposed to be protecting our monetary system too. Yeah that's right back during that time the agents were overworked Well they've always been overworked we were we were overworked in my time the agents were overworked back during J.F.K.'s time there never seem to be enough agents to go around based upon the mission at hand so that's always been an issue and I would say however with since generally all has been the commander the. Running the Secret Service there really haven't been any incidents of misconduct by the Secret Service in the media there was a little bit of dribble left over from the previous administrations but pretty much when he took over he square right at the ship and I would say that he did a real good job in that in that area so what's the change why change then to go to James Murray what are we going to see what is the president going to see is far is a different relationship there. That's a good question you know the general came in he's the 1st director in the history of the Secret Service to not come from within the ranks and I agreed with his appointment I felt that at that time they needed to go outside of the Secret Service but I know James Murray Personally I helped train him in fact it was one of my students when I was an instructor at the training academy and I worked with him again when I went back to the presidential detail from my 2nd tour he is a squared away 1st rate individual he is a prior United States Army officer commissioned officer brings a lot of leadership with and he had a great career in the field as an investigator as well as in protection level headed Square you know the head straightforward common sense kind of guy and I think he's going to be a great director before we go Dan Do you ever have those the dreams and I think when he saw dreams of it apparently under 20 some watching a movie a president but do you have any of those moments you wake up sweating because you're somewhere you went oh my gosh I did this wrong every night. Well that's good to know every night you're still I woke up this morning and my wife. Jenny tries that I was back on the detail again. I spent a lot of time I think I spent as much time back on presidential detail in my dreams as I did and realized who was it last night was it the Bush or Clinton. You know it was just one of those crazy dreams where you know we had to go somewhere and I couldn't find my shoes I couldn't on my gun. So this is one of those kinds of dreams you know that. Like you're you're having your final exam in college but you know have been the cloud guys you know you don't know where to go I got the story is a great like a lot of stories are in the book you should read it's a great books within arm's length then I'm a retired Secret Service agent author of the book and I am a Secret Service Agent My Life from protecting the president and it's always a pleasure thanks for being so gracious and
