Manhattan just give me that country what you think you just about any place and would love to go to the countryside right here in Auburn or any place in Northern California for that matter and of course it's time to check in with our master gardener Richard Hartley because he's been he's been up I was going to say wallowing in the dirt but I don't mean it that way I've. Been messing around in the dirt basically I have been rattling in to. $2000.00 worth of gravel on top of that die you know serious so far you know right oh yes well I'm putting a circular driveway in my front yard oh Ok too many people have been backing into my neighbor's fence you know tribe or a so I decided I better do something rather than pay for a new fence I. Grab what I would but. Now you also move in some dirt in your own front yard Well I use what I had to dig out because I'm on a hill and my property kind of steps up and so I and putting it in those exit what I did to complete the circle was put in the exit and that dirt I was moving up the hill and up the hill I have cedar trees so I have trees up there and I was going to spread the dirt around the tree and then I thought oh I wonder what I'm going to put under this tree because a lot of people and me included defense of landscaping Oh the fire season you want your trees trimmed 8 feet up now 6. He'd how you really want it and so now you have . Your lawn underneath the string would have put it in this shape Well that's when I started researching and you can go to the Rebs site best to go to rehab site or you just put in what to play and under say trees dot edu you was the educational see things and so you get a print out from u.c. Davis or different universities around the country and they will tell you what to do and what not to do underneath a tree like that where you've got one says Don't install a raised bed Yes that's one thing as I almost thought of that I thought well you know I could put the raised bed that which I have in the backyard I could move it out here and it would be above the dirt Yeah the dirt I'm moving is basically Clay Clay and rock and so when I'm digging down thinking Well one man and well I have. A person there I took out a whole bunch to do in person to hold the Juniper's to the dump so I could I was a bank there and I had Juniper's growing there and so I had to dig up the junipers dig up this is dirt that was there and move it and I didn't want to pay someone to carry it off my property and dump it somewhere so I thought well I'll move it up on Meet the trees and slope it down I'm going to put a little retainer wall there with 3 or 4 blocks high and so that would. Move the dirt and that's what I did I got a guy with a tractor come in there and move all the dirt and now I had to decide what to do with the dirt you know an old city and my mom used to tell me God made dirt so dirt don't hurt. Me and I don't care to get dirty Yes yes and with the rain everything's muddy it was you know driving through it. It's the card to get muddy your feet get muddy still day in and day out I'd have to leave my outside the house and go in. The end I don't know I don't. Take up more and then again my dog is out there with me so he comes in and taken a lot of the mud off I'm soft so it's kind of funny but so anyways getting back to the raised bed that's one thing you do not want to do. You think you know putting it over the existing saw on everything but what it does it reduces the oxygen that penetrates the underlying soil so what happens to the tree roots actually when you start watering your raised bed the tree will to turn up and pretty soon you've got a great bed full of tree whether you like it or not yes whether you like it or not they're looking for the boy stood there looking for the nutrition and nutrients that you're putting in your garden so over the years it may take 2 to 5 years but pretty soon those tree roots are coming up after that thing and that's not a good thing too because one of the problems with the oak trees we have problems here in the Valley of the oak trees falling over during the winter storm is they're playing to their lawn and you're watering your lawn so the roots stay within that top 18 to 36 inches of wood good sometimes those big toe you know you want them to go deep and you want that you know them to sort of to rot a deep and still you don't want to put you have like water zones and trees need deep water wearing goggles that's what you have to put around eventually I found out you it's kind of like a ground cover. Minor good like a buying duty free yes they're pretty Also I have another in the safety area I have laughing. And I also hear from Rosemary I'm Rosemary I'd like to Rosemary because the tracks the bees it has the flowers and it has to be said that since I was 11 you need sun. Does and some doesn't there's. Something about 20 varieties of the lavender and I didn't realize that until I started playing one bank full of lavender and I went to different stores and this lady who moved into. The order was called the Central. Central oils Oh you've got this lavender and that lavender and. I go oh wow I guess they owe you that after I looked at them but you know there are just 27 different varieties of lavender see told me there's so many varieties of never anything I have this I think I told you the story when we were back in Vienna and we went out to my house and Mom and Dad's grave and his mom always wanted clover on the grave and so it was planted when she was buried but you know you think it will go out there will buy some new clover and make sure it's going to be really really nice so we go to this mill because we couldn't find clover at the regular you know feed store or anything like that so that out to this mill we said we don't want to buy some clover and they said which variety do you want and I said there's more than one over and he said it was something like 20. And I slow but it really is yeah he showed through this looking flips the pages you know and we're going to look at all this color where we just finally what was pointed to one thing I would take that and we would brought believe it or not I think like 2 pounds of clover we didn't know all that I might yet it was a lot of clover there. You realize you could probably plant a football field. But we spread it around all over the place Ok. Make sure the grave looks like the others have really bad I don't know where it came from. Grew. He must've been from someplace else who overhear what was good at the ground good ground cover that's pretty yeah that's pretty or say really really has Ok so ground plane the ground bad plantings That's good yes what about you know maintenance tips at this point because there's not too much we can do right now is there no well now is the time if you're going to plant this is the time I was just talking yes to the guy they have a Christmas tree farm and we're And he thought he would plant a lot of the seedlings in the spring time but he found out that since we have the dry summer he was losing about 50 percent of the crop so you know this is the time of year you and you will see within the next month or so all the big. Trees and rose bushes will be coming out of the time to really be planting so the roots do get established you know they do get established and start growing before the heat of the summer so this is the time and yes so this is the time really to be planting Ok so I get that dirt spread out and start planting round. And so you want to choose plants that are basically drought tolerant you don't want to be adding moisture underneath that tree all the time and this is rooted that you have to go to grow up so you want some especially here in Northern California here we do not get rain during the summertime that you want some drought tolerant low growing. That it's not going to overtake the tree the beauty of the tree you wanted like a basically like a ground cover and yeah that tree just to kind of cover it and that's Yes Yes But you mentioned something when you get a lot of your information is called curious gardener Yes master gardeners have a quarterly newsletter and this is available to the public it comes out quarterly and it's about 1012 pages and it has all the information here in northern. California it's actually put out by the Master Gardeners a placer in Nevada County and this is valuable to the general public you go google Placer County Master Gardeners couriers gardener and they'll bring up this magazine I'm that's newsletter and it's got its soil because of the plant problems so let's check your soil now what the problems you may have in your plant may be the sawing off that you know the nutrient shelf and I'm always to pushing if you're going to start a new project in your yard always test the soil so you may go to the store they say oh you need a lot of nitrogen and that's where a lot of phosphorous here and and you may or may not you may not right so get it tested because if you're going to have blueberry bushes one year I put in blueberry bushes they like a silly acidic soil and I was giving them all kinds of compost and I think else and I realized that's. Right it's so you know a lot to. Me So definitely get it tested and but and also in your article on page 3 here Sade garden condition so that's just some of the information we gave out today is. You know what do you do in the sede where you don't get sun I don't know what that Google again Google Ok it's Placer County Master Gardeners p.c. . Mc Actually I'll tell you what it is it's p.c. M g dot you see a n r dot org Ok you go to that site and they open the upper right hand corner it's a search for curious gov and you come up with this How often does a come a quarterly quite literally and it just came out for the winter now to 2020 actually now the time that we have left I want to make sure we get into some of the coming advance notice a little bit of a. Tell January when I put it down for you right now is a question. Time and holiday time so this is everybody having the Christmas price and all that so they're not really having their meetings right now and so January 4th right off the bat right after New Year's it's the container gardening workshop that's put on by Master Gardeners it's at the limits library that's $6050.00 library drive right off the mains. Master Gardener So the Master Gardeners are pretty busy Come spring time they do when they get very busy putting on workshops sure Now again if they have any questions they can always get ahold of yesterday have a hotline that's 24 seventh's that you recorded the hotline except on Tuesday Wednesdays and Thursdays There's a live person couple of them in there in the office from 9 to 12 noon Tuesday Wednesday Thursday but other times any other time you call 5 through your own 889-7388 and leave a message and they'll research it and get back to you Well there are 3 days I mentioned you can take your special men or whatever in a plastic bag.
