And welcome back Lawrence Cross with us once the black holes swarm holes are they one in the same or are they different well they're different black holes as far as we can tell seem to exist 1st of all we've the as I say the gravitational waves we seen from colliding objects billions of light years away behave it's exactly as if they were black holes colliding thirty's forty's solar mass black holes they're pretty huge 1000000 or 1000000000 solar mass black holes in the center of galaxies were moles or whatever are sort of spectator objects within general relativity that connect distant points in space like a tunnel if you take a piece of paper and bend it around and make a little tunnel than 2 points which otherwise you have to go all the way around the piece of paper to connect can actually be connected with this little tunnel those objects are hypothetical and in fact it turns out that if normal matter is all there is you can't make any wormholes because the mouth of each worm all at each end of the wormhole will actually collapse to form its old black hole in a time scale shorter than you go through the wormhole so the only way there could be traversable wormholes in the universe of the type that Jodie Foster went through and contact that's right would be if it would be if there was the again new types of energy and we simply don't know if those energy types of energy can be created there's a lot lots of evidence that we very difficult to create them so black holes are real they're very thought of nothing light that camp escaped from them and classically and and when you fall and you get crushed and all of the wonderful things that cause black holes to be such staples of science fiction those objects appear to exist and I think here because. All we can say is the objects we see in the sky kind of walk like black holes and quacks like black holes so they they're probably black holes but but we really don't know for certain they're just so compact millions or billions of times the mass of the sun their region so small that our theories say that the only way that that could could form an object is a black hole so those are real wormholes probably not true wormholes could you pop out into another Universe Well if there was a wormhole you could pop out into a distant region of our universe or potentially potentially into into something you might want to call another universe a region of space and so far away that that that. It isn't causally connected to our universe so we're moles are very exotic and delightful which is why why. We. We would like to would like them to that once again as I say the universe is the way it is whether we like it or not and and wormholes of the exotic as they sound to simply may not exist because once again you can't make a warm all without some exotic type of energy that we've never seen on earth when you were a young boy I bet you were interested in science and had a telescope and did all those great things we did when we were kids sure I had a telescope and a chemistry set. Her foot and yeah I mean it's well I think kids should play with science that's why I write books and I think we should be too many people. I think that's science you know it's kind of funny they think well you know I can enjoy music and I'm being Eric Clapton and I can enjoy. Painting without being problems Gus but I can enjoy science unless I'm a scientist but we can all enjoy the universe we're all born scientists I mean kids babies are born scientists they exploring their world every every day and we kind of beat it out of kids in school and it sort of unfortunate because because it's fascinating and it's fun and even if you don't even if you can't master it you can still appreciate it church and were you born Lawrence when I was born in New York City but I grew I moved very quickly to Canada when I was 3 months old and I grew up in in Toronto in Canada Corona sort of right in town and yeah and I didn't come back to the United States so I went to graduate school at mit and I didn't even know I was an American at the time it wasn't so I was at Harvard a few years a few years later that I discovered I was an American Yeah you were born here you sure sure well I wish that I wish that customs officials have told me I'm a Gratian officials and told me that when I moved to the States when instead they said I needed a visa we were going to get to the point where science will solve some of these political ills that are capturing all of us around this country in this world I think I think and that's one of the sort of side benefits of the book that I wrote I think science has allowed us to to uncover the reality behind the illusions of the universe that we see the real true nature of the universe and science is not just a collection of facts but the also teaches school it's a process for deriving facts and and it's a process of faith some skepticism and a peer quickly inquiry and testing and checking your reason your sources all of those things those tools which we should be teaching students in school instead of pretending to try and fill their minds with facts we should be teaching them how to question appropriately those tools I think are an essential part of a healthy democracy those are the tools we need to cut through the garbage that politicians that we have we can. Demand evidence for why they're what their claims are and then test that evidence and and so I think that those tools of science can be incredibly useful. To it in a democracy and. To have informed voters determining to have informed legislators in fact I fear for our democracy unless we can we can we can basically train people to be skeptical and demand evidence instead of instead of only listening to those things that appeal to the things to the beliefs they had beforehand but instead being willing to go out and say that it's really true how can I check it and if someone is telling me something it sounds good maybe I should be suspicious I think you're right I think you're right let's take some calls says that line up here for the 1st time caller David truck driving in Alabama welcome to the show David go ahead. Thank you out of 3 children I love your show thank you for top dollar. Not pushing for to get us to. His Senate about all the other very serious with with the bottle what I want to know was a monetary systems that are very All right well why is the Bible considered a fairy tale Lawrence Well I don't know what your specific theory is the theories are theories and the point is we have a chance of evidence and and we we we have got and the data and the evidence overwhelmingly tells us for example that the Earth is 4550000000 years old and it just was that it was the formed around shortly after our son did the evidence tells us that that that. This the earth never stopped when it was not 1st fall the sun did not stop in the sky when someone blew a horn because unlike at the time when they thought the sun went around the earth the the actually the Earth goes around the sun and the only way the sun gets off in the skies of the earth stuff rotating If you're stopped rotating basically everything on earth would crumble from that from the sudden shock to. Basically all of the evidence tells us that the the things that they tried to talk about in the Bible were were explanations based on the time when people didn't understand how the universe works and now all we can measure and test and we can make predictions about things and certainly the earth isn't 6000 years old certainly evolution happened all these things happened then and and and as by the way in fact which most of the major organized even churches recognize because it's you can't deny the fact that the earth isn't 6000 years old thing the earth is 6000 years old this is akin to saying My theory is that the United States is 17 feet across the long distance truck driver you're quite aware every given day that you've tested that the United States is is longer than 17 feet and if someone came up he said no it's 17 feet you say look I drive a car for an hour you'll discover it's not really we can do the equivalent of driving a car for an hour and many of our tests and we know the earth is not 6000 years old it's 4550000 years old we know it's a one percent accuracy what do you think of the flat earth or should really believe the planet is flat Well you know every day I try and come up with different reasons why why these ideas are wrong for example again to earlier caller we know the one of the reasons we know your essence under older than 6000 years old is an amazing fact that you know how long it takes light to get from the center of the sun to the outside of the sun. 1000000 years wow that's a lie keeps bouncing off all the atoms so the sun will be 6000 years old would be shiny but similar with the flat earth all sorts of reasons that there are 24 time zones and if you was flat you would come back to where you began after $24.00 time zones I just in fact more over more importantly I just came back from a trip where I flew around the world so I can accept the world is round because I flew around and ended up back where I began and that's a lot of flying too it really is let's go to our Skype call and while in Richmond British Columbia Canada Welcome to the show you're on the air. I enjoy 1st time caller thank you while you're doing good to have you with us great go ahead. I'd like to say that I agree with that Professor Krauss that life on earth is just happenstance a collision basically I believe it's a bullet hitting a b.b. . I would like to propose a hypothesis to both of you sure go ahead. I'd like to preface it with with a quote. From myself I may have planetary. Fairest and I'd like to say that we have been granted the privilege of participating in the abundance of life on this unique and fascinating world my only hope is that we will all eventually come to realize that. I think that we need to have more reverence for life on earth as it is very much a rarity in the universe. I believe the way life happened was a large comet impacted Mars. And threw water everywhere and when it impacted Mars Mars was semi Molson's Afrikan and a portion of its core is dense core was spit out and you know to the left and to the right of our solar system I believe the planet Mercury is part of Mars core and out on the right side spat out was that asteroid I believe it's called site or site. And. This well water was then sort of sucked up like a vacuum cleaner by the planet Earth and Venus Well let's find out from Lawrence about just some of the things you've said go ahead Lawrence Well it's nice it's nice. To believe these things but the point is that we have. That. Lots of evidence which tells us about how where water on the Earth comes from for example and and and we we know that ever there are enough comets and asteroids that have been hitting the earth over 4 and a half 1000000000 year history to actually provide enough water for as before to fill all the oceans on earth there are some issues because it turns out we can also measure what I call the different isotopes to cerium an idea in the ocean water on Earth and it's slightly different than the water in many of the comet so we know there's a class of comets from the outer solar system it's probably provided some of the water but in fact remarkably when the Earth formed then when that's is one of the problems with your theory if if if if something impacted upon Mars anough them that make it molten the water with with with of course not be. With it which is incredibly volatile would be one of the 1st things to go remarkably when the Earth formed the temperature in the neighborhood of the Earth was about a 1000 degrees in that part of the solar system some for a long time we thought all the water on earth had to come from distant comments but now we've learned that water can be trapped deep in rocks so it's possible that some significant fraction of the water on earth actually. Was her mortal what it was trapped in the rocks when when the in the small rocks the form the Earth Benchley as far as as far as your notions of mercury again we know the thing composition of reference difference and the composition of Mars there they formed a different times in different places but it is true that we have lear
