How do you do good evening and welcome the jumbo had a show for Westwood One Radio we're at 186650 Jimbo 186-650-5462 extension 65 fighters a jumbo hadn't showed dot com You can follow me on Twitter at Jimbo talks we can talk about a problem by which we have heard about and we've all said all that's terrible. There's been of course washed out of the major headlines by all the other stuff which we deem more important quote unquote Well this is very important and we're going to talk about it tonight in some detail with retired Marine Corps colonel my cousin he is the. Senior Director of government solutions at Clear force and a man here to talk about veteran suicide thank you for being with us Colonel and thank you for your service Jim I appreciate you I mean I absolutely well we're glad to do so we're sorry for the reason involved but. Just how serious is the veterans suicide crisis I would say that suicide in the nation that we frame it that way at 1st the v.a. Has done some really good work and research what they put out in their 2019 annual port about 45000 Americans die by suicide each year and inside that you know about 6000 that's runs who died by suicide and that might seem like a small number as that larger $45000.00 but veterans die at a rate of about $1.00 times higher so it is a serious issue and it's a national issue. It certainly ought to be one and a half times the national rate to what extent have we determined or can we determine that this might be related to p.t.s.d. . Well I think there will always be a connection I think to stress in your life right so for the military members p.t.s.d. Comes from their service to this nation and our own courses right so what but you would also say that that isn't necessarily a job wrecked linkage another way to be at p.t.s.d. You're on a path to commit suicide I know that's not a proven connection but what you can say is and it is also under a great deal of stress looking for ways to address or deal with that often find themselves struggling alone so we can do as a national epic on an all hands on deck effort to notice those individuals who are struggling and think that Dr helped them sooner and I want to certainly talk a lot about those who do face a serious problem here but the Colonel Mike Hudson has touched on something that has been that a raw nerve of mine since I became a Vietnam veteran lo these many decades ago and that is the notion that if you're a veteran your damaged goods some people suffered severe trauma by virtue of their service of defense of their country many others did not and if I'm not mistaken veterans as a group are better educated are better informed more civically involved then the average us citizen and I'll tell you something as a person who's worked in news for many years and there's a 2nd reference that I used to see a great deal to a given subject of a story and let's say the story was a. Convenience store was held up this evening at 103 Main Street. Police charge Judge John Doe in the case 2nd reference the Vietnam Veteran are you quote are you kidding me now the 2nd reference had been the African-American the Hispanic the this or that whatever of course people would go crazy but that 2nd reference was except oh well a Vietnam veteran now damaged goods holding up a store what can you expect that drives me crazy. Yeah I would I would suggest to you that you are. Hiring about you know being you know out to bring it back into your work work space is a good thing they are as you pointed out they're highly trained very motivated and my experience 1st hand experience is you know some of the finest men and women that our nation produces serving their military and so when you bring them in they are very focused they're task oriented they're interested in building something larger than themselves and when that transition out that can be a bit of a challenge but organizations that bring that net I think we've got it for it. And I think that's why the focus is there were always be individuals in our nation do bad things right and some of them if you could discover what those external drivers were that might put them on a pass a path to end up doing something negative either to the organization they work for or to themselves that early detection moving left is what we should be focused on not trying to say hey because you were in the military you somehow are coming out damaged and therefore you are shouldn't be considered for a job I would disagree with that as a Cessna Yeah right off the bat having having established that it just needed to be made clear but again to the main topic at hand and that is that there are veterans out there who are are hurting and they do need special attention they have given their service to their country they have agreed to say if you wish to place me in harm's way then I will in fact go in harm's way some of us the government took us up on that offer and did in fact said this to harm's way there's a guy I knew would be it I will mention his name but be are will just use as a bishop I've lost track of b r. Last I heard he was a Nashville in and out of various v.a. Facilities and honestly I don't know whatever happened to him he like I am getting older and I just hope that he has somehow found peace and a reasonable degree of security each year more than $6000.00 American veterans take their own lives really that's a startling statistic to me. Yes it is it is to me and I think that the conversation that the nations haven't I know that the a c. In the work come out of the White House out of Congress they are all engaged on figuring out a way to early discovery drivers right so why someone there must be events activities that are driving individual down that way so the V.A.'s do a lot of good stuff as a veteran service organizations the Fiba ones when it's an all hands on deck effort to help come up with ways to detect and want to think think about it some of the modern technology automation went out and he specially if you think about a workplace environment right so a military member served in their unit they bonded within that unit that was there their family that was there struck the deployed down ranges as you discussed in Vietnam I mean those bonds became really tight right specially when your external pressure of conflict is applied to La Times and the transition out there is that there's a they have to reconnect that way and some of them have no problem they just move from from serving in the military to certain and in the peacetime force here around not to be some force but in a civilian organization and there and they're ready to go a few other sometimes might need a little bit of help with the dad would tell you just kind of sharpen that is that that's the highest risk of taking their lives by suicide tend to be those when the 1st year or so in that transition so they've just left that the military or they tend to be an age group about $18.00 to $35.00 So those are the veterans that are at highest rates there's a phone number I'm going to mention that we will mention several times of course there's our number here 186650 Jimbo when 866-505-4626 we would like to call in and speak with retired Marine Marine Corps Colonel Mike Hudson the other number is for veterans who feel they need to reach out there is a Veterans Administration crisis why it is 180-273-8255 I'll repeat that the v.a. Crisis line is 180-273-8255 who should consider calling that number Colonel. Well I think it is a couple things to think about there one clearly if you're an individual and you're in your Russell you don't have to necessarily have been in the military so if you're wrestling with some some decisions or if you're moving towards a dark place and you need to talk to a trained professional call that number if you are at home and in the family unit and there's someone close to you that you think is could use some solid support or help or you yourself need to get some guidance call that number they are 247365 ready to be part of the solution. Again the v.a. Crisis line is 180-273-8255 that is of course for veterans who feel they need some help it's not a number to call. For those who are idle leak Juris about the topic at hand if you'd like to express your curiosity with questions or comments to Colonel Mike Hudson retired Marine Corps leader senior director of government solutions at Clear force that number is our usual number 186650 Jimbo 186-650-5462 extension 68 will be back with more of a job go ahead and show it just a moment. He was a retired Marine Corps Major Mike Hudson a partly criminal forgive me I devoted you or her Marine Corps colonel my cousin he is the senior director of government solutions at Clear force what exactly is clear force you could force is a kind of a work force early detection and looks at risk we use technology and automation to enable an organization to focus on employee well being to do that in a way to discover. Early external drivers correlate those with internal workforce drivers might be cyber monitoring could be some security apparatuses we help an organization detect individuals that are struggling and that allows them to focus some of their internal resources sooner get out in front of the problem or we support their their capability to do risk detection if there's an individual that is tempting to do potentially something they get in a work space very good and they get their websites their name clear Force dot com But again the most important number we have for you is that v.a. Crisis Line 180-273-8255 know a lot of folks are calling a bit like to speak with Colonel Hudson and we'll start off with another my key is in the Hermiston Oregon Good evening Mike. Good evening Jim sever fire Colonel I'm a pastor August 2nd calling Ahmed Jarhead also founded 2nd calling as a pastor and one of the things are running into as I tried to work with the v.a. And the local mental health offices to set up not so much counseling but veterans groups who could come together and just talk about things and and shared experiences and I signs that it seems to be there seem to be roadblocks because we're a religious organization nobody wants to touch us because of the separation of church and state and all this other stuff I was once maybe the colonel maybe had some suggestions. Yeah I would. Say I don't work directly with the v.a. But I would I would point you towards some of the veteran service organizations that are in your area start there and then potentially some of the cyber ones that are focused on helping veterans I think that would be a really good place in 1st off I should say give you some profile back and thank you for your service and to this site I would as you know as well Mike is at the chapel and you're a key player in maintaining the Marines and sailors and in that case the Army the Coast Guard in the whole mine so what you're doing right now has sought that's really good being able to help individuals reconnect find some solid footing a spiritual pathway is never a bad one. A bit of that. Thank you v
