News I'm going to mosques in London and despite the recent attacks in London Ariana Grande day held her one Manchester benefit concert today telling a sold out crowd where we go any further with a girl from the bottom of the heart of the hit say I love you so similar to the. Comforts are coming together and these are the some of that the concert will help those killed and wounded in the attack nearly 2 weeks ago as a concert wrapped up in Manchester Justin Bieber Katy Perry Coldplay and Marcus Mumford are monkey acts that played that concert today in former f.b.i. Director James Comey is scheduled to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee this week where lawmakers expect him to talk about the investigation into Russian meddling in the u.s. Presidential election and possible connections to the Trump presentation team Komi headed that investigation until Trump fired him but Russian President Vladimir Putin in an interview with N.B.C.'s Meghan Kelly airing tonight says he hasn't seen any proof of Russian interference in the election presidents come and go and even the pardon power. Our change but the main political direction does not change but that's why in the grand scheme of things we don't care who's the head of the United States we know more or less what is going to happen is speaking there through an interpreter and when asked whether he had any damaging information on President Trump Putin told her that's just another load of nonsense in Portland Oregon several 1000 demonstrators from varying groups have converged on a downtown square in the wake of Friday's fatal stabbing of 2 men who tried to stop another man's anti muslim tirade N.P.R.'s Martin costly has more Portland police wearing riot gear just cleared out a whole plaza here of so-called anti fire anti-fascists which are sort of street brawlers who oppose Trump supporters they came here to oppose this Trump rally apparently things got a little heated between them the police the police who smoke bombs now to clear them out of the plaza N.P.R.'s Martin costly reporting but the truck rally was allowed to continue this is n.p.r. News. In her in Italy more than 1400 soccer fans were injured when panic swept through a crowd of event us fans watching the Champions League final against Real Madrid Police say a loud sound just before the end of the match panicked thousands of fans gathered in the stadium causing a stampede because of the noise is unknown but officials say it may have been a firecracker in Hong Kong thousands attended a candlelight vigil to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Beijing's Tiananmen Square massacre for the rest of China though marking that incident isn't allowed as the B.B.C.'s Michael Bristow reports the organizers said more than $100000.00 turned up for the annual event in Victoria Park the authorities said the figure was much lower but once again people in Hong Kong remember the hundreds perhaps thousands of people who were killed by Chinese troops in June 1909 a huge banner on the stage says if a speaker said simply and dictatorial rule in China there was no such memorial event anything there that even makes reference to the massacre so it is an Internet posting he's banned by the authorities the B.B.C.'s Michael Bristow comedian Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial gets underway outside Philadelphia tomorrow and though he doesn't plan to testify the testimony gave a decade ago in the accuser's lawsuit could be pivotal a pivotal rather in this trial his accuser is taking the stand this week and will tell her story publicly for the 1st time he has acknowledged giving many women he had sexual affairs with pills or alcohol but he denies any wrongdoing I'm joining her post n.p.r. This is All Things Considered from n.p.r. News I'm Michel Martin we're going to start the program again today in the United Kingdom which is coming to terms with the 3rd terrorist attack in 3 months as we've been reporting throughout the weekend 3 men driving a van drove into pedestrians on London Bridge Saturday night when their car stopped they jumped out to stab people at restaurants and bars 7 are dead and some 21 are critically wounded the 3 assailants were shot and killed by police we're going now to N.P.R.'s Eleanor Beardsley who's in London for the latest Eleanor thanks so much for speaking with us it's good to be with you Michel So what has been happening after the attack last night Well today police have been raiding houses in East London and they've arrested 12 people that may know or be associated with the 3 men who they say are involved in the attack the London Bridge and the Borough Market area of restaurants and where the attack took place last night has been cordoned off and people were going out there today you know just to lay flowers or just to see it and there was a group leaving with you know rolling suitcases out they were from Los Angeles and I talked to Wesley Gross and he says their hotel was right in the middle of it all and here he is you know we heard the gunfire we were in the room and we could hear people yelling and screaming hammering running because it's just down the street so they were running in a bunch of them came inside the hotel. To do to have cover and then they locked the doors to make it see the police outside with automatic rifles and yelling at people getting people in and continue to going heard gunfire and and so was pretty well and then finally we went to bed and then about half an hour later they came pounding and said Get out right now can you tell us a little bit about how the police brought all this under control last night and well of course as the violence started the calls began coming in and today the spokesman for Scotland Yard talked about that a little and it was the 1st responding officers who came upon these stabbing lunatics who were just going in restaurants and slap. Ashing people on the streets so Mark Riley the spokesman he was trying to explain why 8 officers had emptied 50 rounds into the 3 attackers He says it's justified because the men Michel were wearing suicide belts and at that point no one knew that they were fake and here's what Mark Rowley said. 'd it had already taken him into 'd it had to be stopped immediately So Eleanor given all this could you just describe the mood there how are people reacting to all this well you know I feel like I've been through this too many times I was in Manchester less than 2 weeks ago when there was an attack where people say they do not want to stop living their lives the way they want to but Michel this is the 3rd terrorist attack in 3 months is the 2nd with people being you know hit on a bridge and it's again less than 2 weeks after the Manchester concert attack that killed $22.00 people Ariana Grande and other famous artists are back in Manchester tonight for a benefit concert that sold out and it's being broadcast live on television tonight but people in London I have to say were a little jittery the feeling of God It's happened again and I spoke with London cab driver Glen unit and here's what he told me too awful sorry I didn't get that after we started because it's so you can. Call me an artist. You know. Look at all I feel I'm not bored because what windows in the. Room Or lot or where I go his comment sort of summed it up people don't really feel safe but they're determined to keep living their lives before we let you go Eleanor you know the president of the United States Donald Trump expressed himself in a number of tweets in the immediate after that one of them criticized London's mayor and a number of American news organizations have pointed out that he seems to have mischaracterized what the mayor said but I was wondering if there was a reaction there to these tweets coming from the u.s. President yes absolutely mayor said the cause. Said he had more important things to do than to respond to Donald Trump's ill informed tweet he called it and he said Trump had deliberately taken his comments out of context Khan who had told Londoners don't be alarmed when you see more police you know and armed officers on the streets and Trump had tweeted that he said Don't be alarmed after all of these deaths and so concept he's busy working with the police in response to this act and to lead this city and reassure the people that's N.P.R.'s Eleanor Beardsley reporting from London Eleanor thank you so much for speaking with us you're welcome Michel and you're listening to All Things Considered. Let's turn now to a different side of this story which is that now that we know that there is a story how should we be telling it last night and for much of the day if you turned on the cable networks or clicked on the home pages of most major news organizations you were likely to see the same cell phone footage frighten victims pictures of emergency vehicles racing to the scene and as these attacks and the images that go with them are becoming sadly more common more people are asking if the way the American and indeed the international media cover these stories needs to change and Nonis one of the people asking that question she's a veteran journalist and she holds a chair and journalism ethics at the Poynter Institute that's a nonprofit dedicated to journalism education she was kind of to join us in our studios in Washington d.c. Thanks so much for joining us and well thanks so much for inviting me you know you wrote about this actually you wrote about this after the attack in Manchester 2 weeks ago you said look yes the attack is news but does replaying footage of victims for hours are turning over the entire homepage to the story as c.n.n. Fox News and Breitbart did elevate the public understanding of why terrorism is committed or and I'm editing a little bit here or is it just lazy and sensationalist tabloid journalism blowing the murder of 22 people out of proportion to stoke fear I take it your view is it's the latter my view certainly is it's the latter and I think the problem with this is that by playing this endless loop of the same images of terrified people running away from the scene of an attack we are essentially playing into the hands of the terrorists who are doing exactly what the terrorists want we know study after study shows that terrorist groups and particularly ISIS is extremely savvy about the use of social media and mass media they are looking for the spotlight this is what they thrive on and they in fact use this spotlight in order to recruit among vulnerable people who are attracted to this sense of notoriety but we also know that all terrorist attacks are not treated the same way for. Yesterday in Kabul which experience a horrific a car bomb attack you know just a week ago which killed 90 people and wounded you know hundreds of people just yesterday that 7 people were killed in another suicide bombing at a funeral in Kabul and we also know that somebody drove up to a bar shot people in northern Mexico you know 6 people were killed you know $22.00 people were injured that's that's equally horrific but I would venture to say that most people don't know that those latter 2 things happen unless they are very close watches of the news and so the question would be why is it that some of these incidents receive a tremendous amount of attention and some of them don't you're right and if you do a close analysis of the news you'll see that Western media outlets the closer that a terrorist attack is to the United States or to some Western country the more coverage it gets now in a way this is natural we are naturally more worried and scared if an attack is happening in Orlando or in Paris or in Manchester England than we are if something is happening halfway around the world where we don't live or we don't know people who live there my issue is more with the fact that you know how do we cover this as journalists in a way that is for the people who are trying to serve right our readers our listeners our viewers what is the purpose of our coverage Well if war news journalists our purpose is to we have to cover the news if it happens I'm not saying we should cover it up obviously we have to cover it but we have to elucidate eliminate the incidents that have happened and inform people in some way tell them more what does that look like what does that sound like well how does that work I may add to the conversation tell people something they don't know give them more information that is clear that is precise that is responsible that is not based on bias or assumptions that have not yet been confirmed by authorities so for example just yesterday the president tweeted out a link from the Drudge Report that cold the. Attack in London a terrorist attack before the authorities had done so as it turned out that was correct but for drug to be reporting that it was a terrorist attack before the authorities had even said so London authorities came out and said please don't do this you know we don't know what this is yet so you really have to be wary of unsupported theories because sometimes things aren't what they appear to be and there are many many cases where things that were initially assumed to be terrorists have turned out to be just a crazy person who didn't have another agenda and the other point that you said in your piece is reconsider referring to terrorists as claiming responsibility aren't they admitting guilt Tell me about that that's right I mean I dislike this convention of saying ISIS claimed responsibility for this in this I mean it's murder you know if 100 people are killed that's murder that's not responsibility it's not responsible in any way so why are we adopting the lexicon of what they say I mean what I find really interesting is that study after study has shown that these groups to Rob on the attention they get Michael jet or a behavior economist studied 60000 terrorist attacks between 199-2012 that were reported in The New York Times and he found that terrorist groups are increasingly seeking in recent years to exploit social and mass media and what keeps them alive is the oxygen of this publicity and another separate study found that terrorism deaths are the single most heavily covered type of death per capita in the 1st pages of The New York Times compared to every other way that a human can die again this fuels the perception that we are living in some sort of a terrorist state out of proportion from the reality that it is what then would be your metric for determining how much coverage something should get. I think the coverage the amount of coverage is determined by each organization I'm talking about the quality of the coverage I'm saying don't cover it in an ignorant why. Say tell people something about who this person was who did the attack tell us something about the victims who suffered tell us something about the agenda that's behind it tell us something about how this city fought terrorism or solve this crime in an important way you know give us a solution that worked one place Well clearly there's a lot to talk about here and I have the feeling this isn't going to be the last conversation we have about this so thanks so much for coming in that's in.
