The Gunnison country has always been partial about its entertainment today Western State College the Gunnison Arts Center Cattleman's days in the roaring and boisterous 4th of July celebrations in Crested Butte are front and center in the old days one could find great entertainment at the Smith Opera House on Boulevard or could've watched a traveling troop perform oncle Tom's Cabin in the big tent on a vacant lot just south of the movie to hotel and near the Edgerton house sports events ski racing foot races pole climbing rock drilling billiards and hose kart racing were common in the Gunnison country at the libido hotel it was common to have 2 dances a week in the big ball room with 200 people dancing the live feed it was surrounded by other establishments boarding houses and saloons on a bandstand knew the libido Gunnison city band put on concerts twice a week on this corner were stage some local price fights well attended $1.00 of the fighters was the legendary soon to be heavyweight champion of the world Jack Dempsey Dempsey was born in the NASA in the San Luis Valley and work for the railroad western Colorado in periodic Lee fought to earn money for the 1st rodeo respond affairs just contests to have some entertainment on a Sunday afternoon participants were Ran chan some 2 or 3 ranches the Cowboys gathered at the corral and took turns riding the wild Bronx or engaged in calf roping This led to Cattleman's days of early contests including calf roping bronc busting horse racing balance races wagon races Cowboys foot races wheelbarrow races log sawing greased pole contests and others many of the early day events were held on Main Street. One of the early rodeo grounds was just west of the president's house on the western state college campus ice rinks were also a common with a big one just east and south of you the hotel one of the great contests usually held on the 4th of July was a tug of war pitting the cattlemen versus the amount of Gunnison the other got us a nice were but larger they were not as physically fit as the Cowboys and found themselves dragged into the mud puddle which awaited all losers after all competitions the participants adjourned a nearby taverns to brag of their accomplishments or drown their sorrows with a few glasses of beer.
