It's Morning Edition from n.p.r. News I'm Steve Inskeep in New York and I'm Noel King in Washington d.c. Good morning in Puerto Rico last night the old colonial section of San Juan looked a little bit like a war zone. Police fired tear gas they shot at protesters with rubber bullets and threw flash grenades these protests started out peacefully during the day but by evening things had gotten chaotic Puerto Rico has never really seen protests like this people want their governor Ricardo will say oh to resign but he is refusing and so the protests keep getting bigger Adrian Florindo of N.P.R.'s Code Switch team is in San Juan Adrian I know so protests of this size are really unusual in Puerto Rico you were there yesterday would you see how big was it I mean it's hard to say for sure how big it was there are no official estimates but there were many many thousands of people during the height of the protest it was really hard to even just move through the streets of old son one there were there were so many people and you're right it was an unprecedented night of political protest against a sitting governor this sort of thing doesn't really happen hasn't ever happened in Puerto Rico one reason it was so big was because of international famous artists from Puerto Rico bad bunny Ricky Martin the rapper as he then there who all called on on people to come out but you know the others that Puerto Ricans are just really angry they're really angry and fed up with their governor and with the government and they say they've had had enough of them things started out as you said pretty peacefully during the day and then at night it's sort of descended into chaos what happened yeah you know after nightfall sort of you know the energy changed at the protest you know you could sort of touch and start to feel tensions rising as as some of the more aggressive protesters started to confront police a little bit more than some point there was a trigger of some sort and the tear gas started for flying in the in. Iraq started being hurled and then things devolved into into chaos and so it was it was a chaotic end to what was otherwise a very peaceful protest why are people so insistent that the governor resign remind us what he has done here well the thing that sparked these protests initially over the weekend was the publication of these leaked text messages between him and members of his inner circle in which they used really offensive language to talk about political opponents women and really every day Puerto Rican. Puerto Ricans were really offended by these text messages but but really it was kind of the final straw for Puerto Ricans who have been really frustrated about a lot of things on their island for a long time the economic crisis and the fact they feel like their governments are often corrupt cronyism. Slower response and recovery from Hurricane Maria and then to see their leaders making light of a lot of the struggles of everyday Puerto Ricans that it just became too much and people took to the streets is there any sign that Rose say oh is going to listen and step down given that things are getting larger and violent now he has been insistent that he's not going to step down he has been you know facing increasing pressure from obviously the protesters but also his political allies his political opponents. There has been talk within the Puerto Rican legislature of beginning impeachment proceedings but that is unclear whether it's going to happen protesters say they're going to continue taking to the streets until he either steps down or is removed from office Adrian Pfleger of N.P.R.'s Code Switch Team Thanks Adrian thanks now. 4000000 people have now fled Venezuela they departed a country that is rich in oil and other resources and which now faces political and economic chaos this is a story of the millions who remain how do they get through their days when goods are scarce and their money is almost worthless N.P.R.'s Philip Reeves. It's Morning Edition from n.p.r. News I'm Steve Inskeep and I'm no well King good morning face app is a program that takes your photos and transforms you into a much older version of yourself by now you're either probably using it yourself or you've seen a friend or a celebrity show off their transformation on social media face app was developed in Russia by Russians and that has raised a big question how might those photos be used the Democratic National Committee doesn't want to take chances and it's telling presidential campaign staffers to quote delete the app immediately Jeffrey Fowler is a technology columnist at The Washington Post he ran his own forensic analysis of face app and he talked to the company's c.e.o. Jeffrey good morning good morning so explain how face app works because the end results are pretty cool it's neat to see yourself much older it's a wonder of artificial intelligence that it can map all these points on anybody's face and then figure out how to morph them just enough to kind of figure out what your future self might look like it's actually been around since 2017 with other type abilities it can also change your gender or your hair but people really started paying attention to it recently with this aging effect you didn't Alliss of face sap should users and this is the big question Should users be worried about privacy and security where those photos going all really good questions I think you should worry about face app but not necessarily any more than all the other apps on your phone I think it's great that this app has caused us to have a conversation about hey wait a minute where is my data going is it possibly going into the hands of the Russian government and we have some answers to those questions but not all the ones that we necessarily want but I didn't see anything under the hood that made this app seem any more particularly dangerous than a lot of the other ones that are also really popular and the fact that it was developed in Russia by Russians doesn't alone make it a security risk but democratically. Hers are worried about it can you explain why one of the things that makes face app controversial is that it has this privacy policy in terms of service that privacy advocates have started pouring through and it's really broad It basically says that this app has the right to take your photo and hold onto it and use it kind of whoever they want for as long as they want that kind of language is actually pretty common in a lot of companies terms of service you'll even see that like an Instagram and Facebook but we now look at Russian companies a little bit differently especially after the $26000.00 election where we know Russian technology had a role in shaping that election I think we also look differently now at apps that are collecting pictures of our faces because we've been having a big conversation about the power of facial recognition and how that might be used if you talk to face apps c.e.o. What did he tell you he offered some specifics about what his app is doing to respect our privacy that the Terms of Service and privacy policy and his website don't really offer and I think some of them are important so he said for example Face Apple only uploads one a photo at a time not your phone's entire camera roll there were some people that presume that it had access to every single photo was sending that all up into the cloud and that is not the case I also saw that in my forensic analysis another important thing he said is that fees at delete most of the photos from its systems after 48 hours so again we have to believe the c.e.o. In this but he says most of them are gone after 2 days and the other thing he said that I think is important that they're not using these photos to do something else they're not running some kind of side business and facial recognition they're really only using this to provide this service in the app which is to morph your face into something cool and if people do want to delete their data is there some place they can go and figure out how to do that quick. Yeah well it doesn't really help just to delete the app itself because well as we've learned your photos are going into the cloud or being processed in a server elsewhere but you can go in the app and if you go into the bug report settings and you submit a bug report and you start it with their word privacy The company says they will pay attention to that when and delete their data of yours that they've got on their server Jeffrey Fowler is a technology columnist for The Washington Post thanks so much Jeffrey you get what to some American voters say of the American member of Congress who represents them Rashida Jolley of Detroit Drew intense attention is one of 4 Democrats pushing to more directly confront the president President Trump seized attention by saying the u.s. Born lawmakers should go back where she came from Quinn Klinefelter of w d t spoke with some of her constituents. When President trying to do this certain progressive Congress women hated America and should go back where they came from this is a place where u.s. Representative Rashida to leave was born she'd likely return to Detroit's main thoroughfare Woodward Avenue walking towards his job at the local Veterans Affairs Hospital Desert Storm veteran Satori a Davis says the president's tweets don't represent the country he fought for should be even said like that especially coming from the president and the people that make America is all walks of life further along Woodward Avenue in Detroit or Denise Avery takes a harder line and says Congress should do more than simply censure the president I think they should. Trump has never been particularly popular here he barely won Michigan in 2016 and lost in heavily Democratic Detroit and he's certainly never been popular with Congresswoman to lead who has repeatedly called for him to be impeached on the campus of to leaves all mater Wayne State University student for Team Alina is a Muslim like to leave she says their faith makes them targets for Trump who uses it to try to energize his base I've never really heard him say anything that doesn't have divisive empathy.
