Hermine made landfall this morning in northern florida as a hurricane, the first to hit that state since 2005. A man was killed by a fallen tree. Tonight, hermine is a tropical storm, churning up the coast with torrential rain, damaging wind and dangerous seas. We have a team on hermines trail, beginning with Omar Villafranca in port richey, florida. Reporter hurricane hermine barreled into the Sunshine State around 2 00 a. M. This morning. The deadly storm flooded entire neighborhoods. Wind gusts of up to 80 Miles Per Hour snapped trees, one of which fell on top of a homeless man, killing him. L power, with power lines down in most of the state. I dont know the condition of my house. I dont know if its flooded or if it isnt. Its really, really, really bad. Like, ive never seen it this b bad before. Reporter here in pasko county, 18 people had to be rescued from the rising waters which barely receded in some places. We tell people first and foremost, evacuate, get out of here, and then just try to go to higher ground. Reporter well, maurice, coastal communities from here in new england down to the mid atlantic watching hermines progress very carefully this weekend. Theres a big complicating factor with this storm. So, today, its been moving very quickly across the southeast, but look at the pattern as we head into this weekend. Builds over the top of the storm. That closes the escape hatch, if you will. It cant get out to sea, so it slows down and then it stalls. In fact, if even drifts back to the west, at the same time reintensifying and maybe becoming a hurricane again as it nears the jersey shore. Its not just this weekend but into monday, into tuesday, into wednesday and thursday. It will drift offshore, really churning up the ocean and the bottom line is as we head into the day on sunday, at the the bottom line is from mid atlantic to new england, significant beach erosion, some major coastal floods are possible, especially in new jersey.
