Thank you dave. Scientists with the u. S. Geological survey were in cedar rapids taking water level measurements. Theyre trying to make sure that the flood gauges are accurate. Theyve been following the flooding over the past several days. How long have the crews been out following this. We started on thursday because we knew what had happened in green. And we knew that in 2008 there was an event around 11 inches of rain. 12 inches something is going to happen. So we started sending people out the flood and to make sure they were okay. Some of our crews from the fort dodge were going out and measuring on the winnebago river. Well look at the projections of the Weather Service is getting. We start to think we have and so we can look at what elevation they have projected and our instrumentation may have a problem at that point and lets prepare for 5 or 10 feet higher than they are expecting. We specifically focused on sites where we havent measured that height before. What are some of the challenges with the complexity of the river system that you encounter on a regular basis in a situation like this. So the complexity is a big deal. All of the river is confined to this bridge. When it leaves the confinement of the bridge and starts flowing somewhere else we have to figure out where it is. And well wade the water. And measure the discharge. So were covering the entire amount of water thats going 57 was closed because there was water over it. So we measured discharge over highway 57. And then we walked through it and measured the flow. Back to you. Impressive. These guys know what theyre doing and we appreciate everything theyre doing as well. Because the actual crest had been so close to the forecast. What is happening right now with the river level. Any change. We are up to 21 feet. And just had no information what thats two feet below the crest at 7 00 a. M. Right now at 20. 77 and were not done yet. We are in the second place. We did break that 20 mark in in oons along the wapsi were sitting at 24. And along in dubuque along the mississippi 16. 9 currently. 18. 3 on friday is when we reach the crest. Slow going in cedar rapids. Thats the wilson avenue exit as cars come on to interstate 80. Heavy. Bruce and beth back to you. Please keep that left lane open on the interstate. I know it backs traffic even a little bit more. That is for emergency vehicles and thats very important. Cedar rapids mayor ron corbett says that the next 48 hours is really critical and most dangerous. And this execution has given us all the quiet confidence. We have this confidence that humanly do. But i want to make sure this confidence we have doesnt let our guard down. Corbett says hes also very grateful for the help other communities have sent to cedar rapids. For those who need help for iowa. From a land line simply dial 211. The city has two imagine shelters open for evacuees. One in st. Pauls united methodist. And the other in the Cedar Rapids Community church. Red cross volunteers expect at least a dozen to check in by the end of the night. The red cross brought in portable showers to the cedar Hills Community church. They experience a sense of relief after signing in. I advise anybody whos at home to let down their pride and come in. The red cross said its prepared to serve hundreds of people. Even though the flood walls are holding in cedar rapids this flood could have a big psychological effect on many people. Especially those that w 28. For the olsen marriage and family clinic. Anybody who feel they might be experiencing from stress and anxiety can call this number. The clinic is open monday through friday from 9 to noon to noon. And people can make pams in person online or through the mail. Well its a little tough getting from one side of the only the i380 bridge remains open. And the traffic is backing up on that this evening. Allof the downtown exits are blocked off. 7th street is open. And 33rd is open. And we understand near the 33rd traffic was at a standstill. Now we all agree that we are moving very slowly right now. Now this is obviously during rush hour so you know that the roads are extra packed with people trying to get home. But there were still log jams earlier today. Things did not better. This is video taken three hours of drivers on the bridge waiting to turn on the 380 northbound. When im in the car i dont feel right. Its really packed up. And the i want to try to hurry and get somewhere. Much as i can. And interstate 380. They do not want any accidents to happen from people being distracted it looks like they are moving. Not driving in the passenger. In the left lane is for emergency vehicles. Really keep it clear. Still ahead were talking to cedar rapids mayor ron corbett about the critical next hours. This is a live look at the cedar river which is slowly rising. More of our Flood Coverage is next. Well take a live picture from thats where a lot of the houseboats ended up in the nowed of 2008. Well take a look at all of our thanks for safely sharing your photos. Its going acros the eastern iowa along the wapsi as well as along the cedar. Those water rapidly moving in that area. One of the photo to share. This is a house near troy mills. Again be safe. We appreciate you taking those photos and well look for those we now down to vinton where the crest happened at 21. 8 feet. Thursday evening when we find that flooding ending in vinton. Also the second highest crest on occurred at 21. 8. Continuing down the cedar, and cedar rapids. Were sitting at 21 feet. We should reach that the 23 foot level. And in its banks in cedar rapids that comes on saturday morning. Want to encourage you to alert weather app. Tomorrow is the couldnt ask for better weather. It is quiet and dry and staying that way. No problems at all. In fact we stay clear tonight. Well stay sunny as we head through tomorrow. Maybe a sprinkle or 2 across eastern iowa. Forecasted for tonight were down in the 40s with very light cool winds. The winds pick up tomorrow. 64 to 68 . Under partly cloudy skies. And that dry weather does persist. Our nineday forecast shows 60s through thursday. Overnight lows in the 40s. In the weekend were dry. Joining us now from the city of the cedar rapids is mayor ron corbett. And mayor so much work and sweat has gone into this preparation over the last few days. The flood walls are holding. Whats your confidence level right now. My confidence level is high. Weve seen the system working. Im not as concerned as the height. We built this to 26 feet. It looks like the crest to be at the projection of 23. So it isnt an issue of going over the temporary system. Its really the pressure over a 48hour period that were worried in the breach. But the flooding now is from the stormwater system which is a gravity system that goes into the river. Thats why all of the crews are working on plugging all those are there any other things that are popping up now that the flood is here. Thats the main concern for the 36 hours or 72 hours we spent constructing this. Thats where all of the people were focused. Once that got done then we were able to work on the Manhole Covers and the storm sewer systems. The core offing nears are going to send tonight so we have plenty of pumps to put the water back in thats coming out of the stormwater system. Right now we feel confident. School was canceled. I support. But i want to make sure that know where your kids are. I was down at the system and doing some interviews and i saw kids down riding their bikes and we dont need that. Theres no school wednesday. Make sure that your kids arent wandering next to the river. The next 48 hours crest is not the end of this. Youre correct. The crest is the peak but the river is going to fall slower than it has risen. Really we have this critical period now here. If we can get through this. If this we sure hope. In hesco we trust. The flooding, piling up sandbags and building flood barriers. And a number of local sports teams have volunteered their time and muscle toward the cause. Tv nines Scott Saville has the story. They use teamwork on the field and the court and that experience came in handy today helping sandbag. The wash Football Team and the mount mercy mens and Womens Basketball bags to help their community. We got somebody to hold the bag somebody you know dumping the sand its like somebody for a shot like that so its teamwork we are always doing different stuff so it is right in our neighborhood serving and giving back to people. You have teamwork on the court youve got and so its all teamwork. This is just like right in our neighborhood. We like serving and giving back to people. Its just a community is working as a team. These a helped out this weekend. I saw posts on social media from every sport that donated their time to help fight the flood. And its just really important to stick together. Obviously theres a lot of competition in the schools. We all just come together and Work Together to get things done. We need to come together as a scott sable, tv 9 news. Well have another look at your lets go back to joe to get a final look on the latest informs on the cedar river. It still stand at 21 feet. Lets take a quick look at 380 at wilson avenue. You can see traffic backed up for a period of time. When the people are heading home from work. We are seeing better traffic flow. 21 foot thats our latest as far as the stage. 23. 0 is the crest. Thats still expected Tuesday Morning. Flooding will come to an end and well have continuing the next hours will be have confidence that weve done a tremendous amount of work, a tremendous amount of planning and weve come together as a community. The cedar river is raging through cedar rapids this evening but so far the citys temporary flood walls are doing their job holding back the water thats now reached its second highest level on record. But it is still rising. We expect the crest to come tomorrow morning at 23 two feet from where it is right now. What is the latest reading on the cedar river.
