This is ellis road at 18th street nw, right near ellis park, and as you can see its under water. So is manhattan robbins park, and the water is really high at the boat houses on harbor drive. The edgewood road bridge is also closed. South and east of the city, the u. S. 30 bridge is open. Upstream, the cedar river flooded a sizable area on the north side of the city. The crest came in at nearly 21. 8 feet. Quite a few homes and businesses took on water most of the visible flooding was in the Northern Edge of downtown, including the Benton County sheriffs office. Some in the zone had been built up after the flood of 2008 one longtime resident of vinton told tv9 he felt the city and forecasters did a good job of warning them well before the flood waters hit. The city has done a very good job in preparing so people had time to do stuff, and getting the right heights. The city has pushed. Twic e to approve funding flood protection. Voters said no both times. Federal lawmakers have approved funding. But not set the money aside. Cedar rapids city manager Jeff Pomeranz said, in yesterdays news cf that permanent flood protection is the citys top priority but it will cost 500 million dollars. Permanent Flood Control protection is critical to our future weve made a number of moves and measures through good planning and implementation and execution for new infrastructure to protect our community, but permanent flood protection will be a necessary solution.
