Now, the city is reminding people that if they want their sandbags taken away, they need to be ready for pickup this morning as soon as possible. People should put sandbags in the public rightofway along the front curb, on the street on lightlytraveled streets, or on any portion of a driveway. The city broke ground on the levee that will protect the newbo district from most flooding yesterday. That levee will stretch from south of the sinclair site to the African American museum of iowa. It will eliminate the need for many of the hesco barriers that helped protect the area from last months flood. Cedar rapids mayor ron corbett says this project is just the start. Its a great starting point, move over and protect Czech Village the city says the levee will hold back water of a cedar river level of up to 20 feet the flooding last month reached 22 feet. It expects it to be completed by the end of next year. But the city is still short millions of dollars to complete the full flood protection plan. The Cedar Rapids City Council is looking at paying millions of dollars for flood protection on the citys west side. The Council Agreed to ask for bids for moving underground utilities that are village.
