For the next two weeks, students will spend six hours a day focusing on social justice. Thursdays lesson surrounds poverty, but teachers sean voigt and Leigh Ann Erickson say its more than that. Its great that we get to serve and help, but for my students i want them to know people, and i want them to be known by with people, and to talk to people. While this lesson is served working hard at mission of hope, the kids will have plenty more lessons on poverty incarceration and race. Theyre starting to see things, and starting to understand things about poverty, about race, about injustice, about our incarceration system. Things that arent normally taught in school. And shes so thankful shes in a school that allows her to show them. Besides Community Service projects, students will learn from reading, writing, and guest speakers. Ericksons idea stems from her experiences when she taught in chicago and queens, new york. She wants students in eastern iowa to change the communitys narrative. If we dont know people who are different than us then ultimately we become afraid of people we are different than us. That fear that leads to anger that leads to injustice so i wanted to break down those walls. Students say in this short period of time, walls are already broken. At first youre a little nervous, but then you get out and help the community. Its just a great feeling. It really helped me become more open minded already just in the first three days. Senior shes taking the class for her grandma. Before she passed away was really big into justice and social justice and getting to know people. I feel like she would be really proud. Today, governor branstad signed a proclamation declaring january as mentoring month across the state. He says more than eight thousand mentors across the state already help kids through various programs. But he says thousands more could benefit from such an opportunity. But the connections these two young women are making, is making a huge shes sometimes grumpy when she comes to school. But after an hour with me shes happy and shes really focused on school. Tori ochs is a social work major at Loras College. As part of the check and connect program, shes paired with mia, a student at the alternative learning center. Ochs works with students like mia to monitor school work and grades. If a student is falling behind or their attendance is sketchy, the mentor is on top of that. Program directors say the mentors motivate students to keep up with school work and balance that with social and home life pressures. The pairs often discuss life after high school. They see what being a College Student looks like and what it takes and thats a huge motivator. Shes only 16 and shes already talking about college. And she has a great future ahead of her.
