But when overused or taken incorrectly, they can be deadly. Kcrg tv9s mark carlson shows us the challenges doctors and law forcement faceen keeping them out oothe wrong hands. The death of former hawkeye football star tyler sash shocked fans and former teamates. Methadone and hydrocodone. Both are forms of opiods powerful and increasingly popular prescriptions painkillers. Doctors nationwide write nearly 260 million prescriptions a year for them. Obviously they dont want to see patients in pain. With so many of the painkillers hitting the streets annually experts say millionsare goi unused. They then become easy targets for people looking to get high. One of the big keys about all this drug control needs to be the diversion issue of prescription medications, to find a convenient way for people to take their no longer needed or expired drugs and get rid of those in a safe way. Doctors and pharmacists are now using databasese to better track whos been prescribed opioids. But Officials Say drug take back programs are lacking. The Iowa City Police department is the only police deartment in Johnson County that offers an aroundthe clock drug opbox. Its t to be like pop cans, we got to be able to do it 24 by 7 when you finish a prescription that is unused, no matter what the streets decline. Users are turning more traditional way to get highh theell go to different doctors and talk about different ailments that they have and try and get the doctor to give them a prescription and when that fails, then theyll turn to street drugs like heroin. Heroin is becing a big deal, its becoming the replacment drug for opioids. Last year 8 people died of heroin overdoses in Johnson County. Four times the average from 2010 to 2013. And the streets is only getting stronger. When we find people dead at a scene, youll see somebody literally dead with the needle in their arm, or literally fall over forward or backward in the position they were when they were injecting the drug. Its definitely a a oncern, we are seeing an n ncrease in the number of clients coming to us. The increase in heroin use also means more people are seeking treatment. So far this year nearly 120 adults have reported heroin as their primary drug of choice at prelude behaviorall services, a drug treement center in iowa city. That number has more than doubled in the past five years. But finding a solution to this heroin epidemic wont be easy. I think there needs to be greater awareness, i think the fact that were having is interview is very good because a lot of time people dont know whats happening unless its happening directly to them. Police say awareness has led to some results locally. The Johnson County Drug Task Force put a bigger emphasis on fighting heroin after the up tick in deaths last year. So far in 2015 only one person in Johnson County has died from a heroin overdose. Unfortunately it usually takes someone dying before we are aware of a certain change or a certin distributor, and often times with those cases well tracac that backwarr and try and get to the dealer. Farmers are packing it in for the winter as harvest season wraps up. And a new report says theyre getting more bang for their buck in corn yields. Thats coming up in our agribusiness report. Good morning this is the david geiger. A big crop report yesterday shows iowa can do more. With less. At least in cor. The usdas statistic ervice. Bumped up iowa corn yields by six. To a hundred 89 bushels per acre. Thats 11 more than last year. So even though fewer acres. Iowa farmers are expected to produce nnrly two point five billion bushels. Thats almost a hundred 30 million more bushels than last year. Soybeans are expected to produce ten percent more than last year. The us da bumped its yields by three to 56 bushels per acre. Making it five more than last year. So iowa farmers are expected to produce 50 million more bushels of beans than last year. With the addition of 50 thousand acres. The novembe1st report margin of error aveeges 100 million bushels for corn. And 40 million bushels for soybeans. The Production Report on a National Level was more negative than the trade anticipated and many grin contracts are down double digits. I ggt analyst don r rose to give me a rundown after its release yesterday. Well, i think when you look at the report overall, it was a supply bearish report on corn, beans and wheat. And a demand bearish report on corn and wheat. The yieeds were bigger on corn and soybeans, they were larger than. The trade had anticipated. But the government also took an axe to the demand taking exports and ethanol usage down, and at the same time ending stocks on soybeans jumped to 465 million, thats certainly a large figure. 40 million over the last. The corn ending stocks jumpd to 1716 million almost 200 million more than the last report. So, its a market that pushed us to the down side here. Negative news, negative reaction. The cattle markets, we really are having a price adjustment. Slower exports, larger imports, were seeing some fund selling, some technical selling hitting the cattle maqket the hog market, is at the seasonal tiie frame where we do usually see the weights increase, which is beginning to happen, we also see the overall supply continues to be large. We haveo move down to a price level where we can clear the pork at t he retail level along with the beef. Earlier in may. The us da announced a hundred Million Dollar partnership with 21 states though the biofuel infrastrucucur E Partnership to double the number of fuel pumps that have renewable fuels. Iowa is going to get 5 million of that and the far Service Agency is in talks with the department of transportation who applied for the grant money. The goal is to put in around a hundred and 85 pumps and 25 tanks around the state. Private partners match the funding in a one to one ratio. Its an opportunity for consumers to puhase someththng higher than an e100blend. That in it of itself will boost the domestic energy, domestic biofuels, which iowa is a big player ib. Thats the big boost that we get from that. Is an opportunity to sell highgh blend of ethanol. Whitaker says making biofuels more available helps support low commodity prices. Adding it helps get into new generations of biofuels like cellulosic ethanol. And thats all i have for the show today. Thanks for joining us. Ill be back again tomorrow well post a video every day in the agribusiness section of kcrg. Com. Youll find it under the news tab. Im david geiger with the aribusiness report.
