Many people enjoy a bowl of but how does the Agriculture Sector remove the seeds and dirt from their grains before wheaties . We look at the process at Iowa State University, up next in our agribusiness report. Stay with tv nine. Welcome to the agribusiness harvest. Grain and seed products will add in rocks or dirt. Or low quality seed. Its all mixed together. And farmers need a way to separate it out. At an gravity separator. Which is used along with cleaning. For dry granular separation. On food grade grain and cereal. A gravity separator is basically a more precise mean of density separation. My name is alan gaul and im the seed conditioning specialist here at Iowa State University seed science center. Basically we have a layer of seed thats at least three to five seeds deep. Air is introduced, it starts to lift the seed. And at that basically floating. The heavy seed sinks to the bottom and the light seed floats on the top of the layer. The heavy materials make contact with the deck, and the deck is shaking in such a way that anything touching the deck actually works its way up the hill. Since were at least three seeds deep. The product in the top layer is now more or less isolated from the effect of the shape. And since the deck is sloped it tends to run down the hill pulled down by gravity. Heavy product is working uphill, and the light product is going down. And the entire mass working down the length of the machine. At this point we wind up with a range from the lightest product to the heaviest product. Typically the light is its thought to be the better seed. And then the difficult part is deciding what were going to keep and what were throwing away. Nats gaul says a gravity separator can make three to six fractions of weight measurement depending on the application. He adds Technology Like this improves the quality of what farmers and consumers use. The pro farmer tour starts up this week. N on the board. Got a little bit of green, kind of a mixed bag starting off the week. Corn lower, real choppy though, mostly sideways, kind of getting spillover weakness from the wheat. Trade with wheat being lower. Not any fresh news over the weekend, lack of farmer selling still supporting the market here today despite the choppy, penny, penny and a half lower trade. Over to the beans, got a little more excitement here we do have a bit of a fresh sale to an unknown that is supporting the market. Its all based off demand and that will be the key to keep the market supported. Little surprising trade here today, we started off lower based off the cattle on feed report just being a tad bit bearish friday afternoon. Key will be cash trade this week. I think the bulls will still want 120120 to hold the market together. And we also got to see too how the labor day demand bookings ended up too. Choppy lackluster, still not very impressive. I just dont see much going on in the hogs at all with the big, big supplies overhanging the market. I think you still want to be a seller. The colfax sheep and goat auction on saturday saw a run of 367 head of sheep. Feeder lambs fetched the days high average price of 2. 06 per pound, while fed lambs averag auction. A pop i call it pop, definitely soda. Pop just doesnt sound right. One of the oldest border battles. What you call your fizzy drink. Whether its a pop or soda its one of those words specific to your region. Just like where you take a ever use water fountain. We say bubbler. Ive never heard bubbler in minnesota. With just a river to separate us. Or maybe just the other side of the state the words we use differ from place to place. We all speak differently and we all have that same sort of pride about our language, ass ociate professor stephen mann is socio linguist. He studies the way people speak. And he says the words we use are influenced by those around us. Here in la crosse. It dates back cet you have a lot of different peoples who settled in this area. You have the german settlers, you have norwegian settlers, you have the french coming through, and so you have all that influence. How about this cook book . What do you see . Its definitely a hot dish. Casserole. Casserole kind of sounds like from the oldendays, whoever you ask, their answer is always right. Many people feel the way we speak is the right way to speak because its what we grew up hearing, our language is a part of our identity and we dont like to be wrong.
