A Road Construction project in iowa city is causing some dangerous conditions at one Junior High School campus. Some drivers are cutting through the campus to try to save time. Crews in iowa city are raising the Railroad Tracks and creating an underpass for vehicles along fifit avenue near south east Junior High School. But to do that, they created a temporary road, which comes into contact with part of the campus. Now many drivers are cutting their drive time by cutting across campus. Kcrgtv9s Iowa City Bureau chief mark carlson joins us live. Mark, those drivers are causing a lot of concern . Yes, uce. And the city is planning to make some changes. Now to understand what were talking about, you really have to see for yourself so take a look. This is the temporary road along first avenue that crews built for drivers to use while they reconstruct the old first avenue to go under the is south east Junior High School where that temmrary road just barely comes into contact with middle school campus. And this is what we saw drivers doing all day long getting off the temporary road, and driving down this campus road meant for buses and parents as a shortcut a a a way to avoid a nearby intersection. As an unintended consequence it moves the street closer to the driveway to our school and people are starting to use the driveway to our school as a cut through or an offrara and it creates and unsafe situatioio and its not just a few cars we saw dozens of cars cutting across the schools campus. Some driving up to 30 miles per hour, and haly slowing down as they turned in. Its all about the kids, i just happened to be here the other day and we noticed cars, about one per minute going through, and right at the front of the school is where traffic. Fortunately no one has been hurt and the district is working quickly with the city to solve the problem before it becomes an even bigger issue. What we are looking at doing is basically make it so its not as convenient totout through, it would still allow people to enter the parking lot and get to the school as they needed to, but it would just make it so its not quite as convenient to get through if youre just cutting. City crews hope to get those barricades set up within the next week or so, maybe even by the end of this week. In the meantime the district is asking people to not use the school as a cut through. In iowa city, mark carlson, kcrg tv nine news. The Iowa Department of education has released a public schools. It rates schools according to their performances in several categories, including student assessment scores in math and reading, attendance, and graduation rates. Each school then receives one of six different ratings. Three schools in the Cedar Rapids School district scored in the lowest category, priority. Superintendent brad buck told tv nine the district is already working to addre shortfalls in academic performance in the schools that need it. Where our schools are, we recognize that were on a journey. And were really doing some innovative and Continuous Improvement work to continue to provide even greater experiences for our students. Buck says there appear to be a connection between a schools rating on the report card and the percentage of students who are getting free and reduced lunches. Users of state park beaches have until next monday to tell the Iowa Department of Natural Resources if theyd like to see some new rules regarding alcohol. Alcoholfueled fights led to early beach closings at both lake macbride and Pleasant Creek state parks. The dnr says theyve heard multiple concerns about other drinking incidents on state beaches since then. So the dnr is considering changes that could restrict drinking at the beaches. And that starts with comments from users. We have fights here that are alcohol related too and when it gets to that point i think mething needs to be done when about whats happening on our beaches. Park Ranger Fairley says there are other parts of the park where alcohol use can become a problem. But the majority of the issues happen on the beaches. He notes some county parks and federal recreation areas, such as coralville lake, already ban alcohol on beaches.
