Trade policy toward China but the interview range far beyond trade policy while Bannon has a history of harnessing white nationalism 1st at Breitbart News and later in the Trump campaign Kuttner says Bannon disparaged the philosophy behind last weekend's violence in Charlottesville Virginia he says it's no nationalism it's losers it's a fringe element we got to help crush it and then he says these guys are a collection of clowns at the same time Bannon says he welcomes Democrats focus on racism describing identity politics as a loser for Democrats at the ballot box Scott Horsley n.p.r. News Washington the White House says it's working to find a convenient time for President Trump a talk with family members of the 32 year old woman killed this past weekend when violence erupted after a white nationalist rally in Charlotte. Well Virginia Heather higher it was in a crowd of people protests against the rally when she was struck and killed by a man who drove his car into the crowd stocks tumble today all through the major u.s. Indices down more than one percent N.P.R.'s Jim Lee has more prices were already falling early in the day and they declined even more after the deadly attack in Spain the markets have been growing more volatile many analysts believe the standoff over North Korea has made investors more nervous there's also concern about turmoil in the White House the fears were aggravated by rumors that chief economic adviser Gary Cohen was stepping down and by President Trump's decision to disband 2 Business Advisory Councils a number of the corporate C.E.O.'s who sat on the councils had stepped down over Trump's response to the violence in Charlottesville last weekend Jim n.p.r. So person. Will Fail crash injured a state trooper and blocked I 70 westbound traffic near silts yesterday night the post independent reports that the trooper had a vehicle pulled over on westbound I 70 when another vehicle crashed into it the Garfield County Sheriff's Office said the driver of the car that had been pulled over was killed the sheriff's office also said the driver of the car that struck the car pulled over was taken to the hospital this is a news. From n.p.r. News this is All Things Considered I'm Kelly McEvers And I'm Robert Siegel we begin the hour with the terrorist attack in Barcelona that local officials say 13 people have died more than a 100 were injured when a van drove into a lock way crowded with tourists Andrew Roby of Washington d.c. Was near the attack when it happened all of a sudden we just saw the white van that went into the crowd. And more so all of the people there just started running you know from that location we just ended up started running because we didn't know what to really think of it and were more so you know shocked at the situation but then you know coming back to look and see what was going on in the area we saw you know I'm not sure there was a man or woman that was laying on the ground that got hit by the actual van since then 2 people have been arrested and ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack we talked earlier today with Fiona goven She's a journalist in Barcelona and we asked her what the local authorities were saying about who did this well we were just having a press conference from the head of the Catalan place both has been telling journalists that I have t. People in custody and I said suspects he is being found that having attempted to dry physically except for him and hit and hit several places that is crack the place of this is on how the man is now being found dead. So the police are claiming that they believe they have identified one of the the man he was driving the van that tout into the people earlier this afternoon and asked Lana. And it's unclear the role of the other people whether they were all linked together or whether they planned other attacks that then somehow did not manage to be carried out it's so developing very fast and it is not completely clear at the moment what is going on you know the police had asked. People to stay away from the part of the city where the attack happened earlier today what are they telling people now well it was incredible actually how fast the police Meester on the area within seconds of that van mounting the pavement and knocking into people and there was a huge police presence and they just locked down the place unfortunately not quickly enough to actually detain the driver of the van he then fled on foot but very quickly that the house which was put on lockdown the center part a very touristy center part of the city was was lockdown our police everywhere there cordons people were told to stay in the hotels go into bars restaurants to keep off the streets don't wander around to get about sites saying you need they say. Things of calm down a little bets. But people are still being told get a fair shake so we know what's going on to just stay safe as they move around unless it's absolutely necessary and that's a lot of people are very nervous as one would understand they would be after an attack like this right people are nervous what else are you hearing from people there in Barcelona today well as usual as we have become very aware of in the aftermath of these attacks people have put together and saying such sort of solidarity and in concert really to each other that as with so many injured at the hospitals of Qatar who was to ask who they nations that are people going to hospitals today at the labs to help the injured there are the taxi drivers have offered free rides to to people in the city to get back to that place of safety and other people are taking people in and people he's hotels have been evacuated are being invited to go in and stay with that with other other local people in the area and this is in a city that in recent weeks has made headlines because of the the pressure of the huge number of tourists in the city it's really kind of it's a very big change that we've seen today Western me everyone is put together that is pulled apart over the saturation of tourists. Fianna govern is editor of the local Spain it's an English language news site covering Spain thank you so much. The trumpet administration says it's monitoring the unfolding situation in Barcelona following today's terror attack there we're going to turn now to N.P.R.'s Jeff Bennett who covers the White House and Jeff what's the u.s. Response to the terror attack Well the White House chief of staff John Kelly says he's keeping the president updated and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson delivered a statement earlier with this morning for would be terrorists terrorists around the world should know the United States and our allies our resolve to find you and bring you to justice and President Trump posted a tweet vowing to do whatever is necessary to help in the aftermath but in a separate message Robert he encouraged people to as he put it study General Pershing of the United States did to terrorists when caught and in doing so the president is reviving a myth he promoted on the campaign trail and the story goes that this Army General stopped Muslim attacks in the Philippines by shooting them with bullets dipped in pig's blood that story has circulated online but historians who have looked at it say it's a hoax. And that wasn't the only controversial tweet today either before news of the Barcelona attack President Trump appeared defiant in tweets this morning about his response to the Charlottesville protests defending what he called Beautiful Confederate statues That's right he said it was sad that the history and culture of the United States is being ripped apart as he put it by the removal of these statues and monuments Confederate statues and monuments to be clear but you know I think the president's pivot to statues may put him on safer ground politically than his previous statement that both sides share the blame for what happened in Charlotte Charlottesville and as evidence of that there's a new n.p.r. P.b.s. News Hour merest poll that finds that some 62 percent of Americans think Confederate statues should remain as historical symbols but here again the president is suggesting that the white nationalist protest in Charlottesville was fundamentally about a statue when it was really a pretext for a rally aimed at expressing white supremacist views with some of those in attendance by the way clearly seen on video shown to shouting anti-Semitic slogans and raising Nazi salutes and interesting political development and in response to all this today we've heard Republicans distanced themselves from Trump's comments about Charlottesville but very very cautiously today one senator not so cautiously a few senators actually the critiques are far more pointed Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina the G.O.P.'s only black senator said the president's moral authority is compromised Ted Cruz had some choice words and take a listen to what Bob Corker said today to reporters in his home state of Tennessee the president has not yet been able to demonstrate stability. Or some of the confidence. That he needs to demonstrate these. We need to be successful nation needs are in the base and Corker also said the president has not demonstrated that he understands the character of this nation I asked the White House what response to all of this no word back yet pretty tough word not demonstrated the stability to do that so fighting words from Senator Corker That's right so Jeff Bennett at the White House thank you Rick. Wisconsin helped Donald Trump become president his near victory there may trump the 1st Republican to carry the state since Ronald Reagan in 1904 Trump's recent comments about the violence in Charlottesville and about con federal monuments do concern some of his voters in Wisconsin but many say they're still behind the president Chuck Orbach of Wisconsin Public Radio has more the suburbs west of Milwaukee have long been a key g.o.p. Stronghold and while voters there didn't go for Donald Trump as wholeheartedly as they have for some other Republican candidates Trump carried the region last fall. As a man riding along more cut the grass outside the post office and while we're toast or retiree Jerry Randall says he's not bothered by Trump suggesting both sides or many sides were to blame for violence at the White Supremacist rally in Charlottesville he told the truth what else do you want to be asked for should tear down statues or monuments of things like that people are trying to rewrite history change what happened 150 years ago it makes no sense Randall says he would absolutely vote for Trump again today because Rendell says the president is telling the people what he thinks is trying to cut taxes and get rid of the Affordable Care Act Another retired man Jim Lampa also says Trump was right to blame both sides for the Charlottesville violence but could have made his point another way this is dead sometimes he talks a little out of place and people misconstrued what the he's talking about this is something I believe we shouldn't be going to. The tweeter impetus says he's willing to give the president more time Katie Mattson says Trump's comments about Charlottesville are correct but Mattson says that doesn't mean she likes everything about the president there's been a lot of things that he's done and said since he's been in office that I don't agree with and that you know a person thinks twice about it and then like. We have to remember he is not a petition but we knew that going into this outside the post office in West Allis bill he doesn't criticize Trump's comments about white supremacists as he Cox says it's a racist country it's terrible you know they think they're doing this I don't know because she falls apart but I think. You know making this country great again I back for that Latino Don because Steele won't say if he voted for Trump last fall calling himself an independent because Steele says Trump is not very diplomatic but not entirely wrong about for Jr if the president is supporting free speech we have that are co-existing in this country whether you like them or not hate groups other groups religious groups. And they are all protected under the same language and these are the issues that people should be talking about all while opinion polls show that President Trump is maintaining his support among most Republicans he's struggling to hold on to other voters a statewide poll earlier this summer showed him it 41 percent approval in this battleground state for n.p.r. News this is All Things Considered I'm Kelly McEvers And I'm Robert Siegel Republicans in Congress wanted to spend the summer talking about taxes and that's the reason a group of senior House Republicans gathered in California this week but President Trump's response to the white nationalist protest in Charlottesville has drowned out that conversation here's n.p.r. Congressional correspondent Susan Davis before any hard battle it's common to seek a little spiritual guidance so ahead of the fight this fall to overhaul the entire tax code a group of Republicans traveled here to the ranch of former President Ronald Reagan near Santa Barbara where better to make big promises on taxes than here where Reagan signed a major tax cut into law Here's Texas Congressman Kevin Brady and we're all focused on in moving forward legislation this year they'd much place in the recent reducing taxes on every American who grow jobs and paychecks nationwide Brady will write the House tax bill that's expected out in September Republicans want it to be the most ambitious tax bill signed into law since the Reagan era tax cuts a generation ago and their allies in the business community do too it's why out
