Years of planning will be put to the test in three weeks when des moines hosts the ncaa mens basketball tournament. Justin surrency explains why the Basketball Court isnt the only place you can find a gameplan during march madness. The game plans for the ncaa tournament in des moines wont only be on the court. between logistics of transportation hotels, team functions, in arena aspects, its kind of been a collaborative efforts. the Police Department will be providing a large downtown assist. one of the Biggest Challenges we have with this being at wells fargo is we are bringing thousands and dense area downtown. scouting has been key. we did have a team that went down to omaha last year. We were able to witness what the Police Efforts were there and how they handled traffic flow and brought that info back to our police crew. so police plan a full court press of the downtown area. one plan i saw had one officer on every corner between wells fargo and court avenue. and when it comes to the bill for extra policing. you are going to see a lot officers waving people through lights. local businesses will largely take the charge. majority of it is wells fargo and area hotels. like a team ready for march, their also watching their minutes leading into the tournament weve actually used some adjustment of hours so we can alleviate overtime. Police Escorts will be commonplace and in years past its even included referrees theres some security escorts that i wouldnt expect a college team to need but when you look at the scale, its a national event. with its definitely been something we have been working on for a long time and we feel like we have a good plan in place. hoping to leave many with some highlights of their own. our officers we love interacting, we want to make sure everyone leaves des moines with a great impression and that includes the Police Department. While we still do not know which teams will be playing in des moines, the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau has already designated 8 hotels where the teams will stay. Its all to help with the logistical planning ahead of time. Battered and bruised. A corrections officer is recovering from an incident inside the mitchellville womens prison. This man was one of four Corrections Officers injured. When Authorities Say an inmate attacked one of them. The Union Representing the officers says the incident could have been prevented or descalated had more staff been on duty. They also say staff should be able to carry pepper spray and here they got the pepper spray locked up in the captains office and ya gotta run back and get permission to get it and by the time thats don the incidents over. Somebody is hurt. An inmate could be killed. An inmate could be dead. An officer could be killed. A Statement Issued by the department of corrections says quote the department of corrections is committed to operating safe and secure facilities and will continue to work to improve our operations for the safety of all. End quote the department of corrections declined to explain why the officers are not allowed to carry pepper spray. Jurors in the murder trial of a boone man are hearing his side of the story. 41 year old alex fazzino is accused of killing his wife, emily, in january 20 12. Today, fazzinos hour long interview with investigators played out in court. In it, he told them her addiction to Prescription Medication was putting stress on their marriage. He also talked about the night found her dead in the bathtub. She was. She was dead. I mean, there was, because i wanted to give her cpr, and i dont know cpr, and like i said, i started screaming, like as soon as i saw her, i was like, help help the defense argues Emily Fazzino accidentally drowned because of drug withdrawal symptoms. Her father acknowledged that addiction in court today. Her sister, however, denies it. Two more iowans have been diagnosed with the zika virus. That brings the total number of cases to three. More than 200 teens representing all of des moines high schools gathered to have a safe place to talk about some of the issues facing americas youth. we wanted to create an event that brought young people from all over the city together to discuss social issues, and create art using one of the urban art forms and we wanted it to be youth led, youth produced. emily lang helped start the urban Leadership Class at central campus, a class that has grown from just short years. The two day event offers town hall style meetings and artistic workshops like graffiti writing, street art and spoken word poetry. And teens say its a place they feel comfortable expressing themselves and talking about tough issues. i think its important that we have it in des moines, because a lot of times people think iowa is perfect and corn and there are problems going on here and i think its really important that we have an outlet to talk about those problems and have people relate to those problems and listen to us. tomorrow the public is invited to a Community Showcase featuring all the art the teens created as well as a performance from joshua bennett, who is national poet. The event tomorrow will be held at performing arts hall on drake universitys campus at 1 00 p. M. The event is free and open to the public. Theres still much more to come tonight.
