Lost hope and believe it is time for a change. For the conservative all stars in the. Days . Ranks how can we not believe in the greatness of America how can we not do what is right and needed to preserve this last best hope of man on earth from Wall Street to Main Street we believe free market capitalism is the best path to prosperity the Larry Kudlow show where. Politics he's a former associate director with President Reagan's Office of Management and Budget . So just tell us on the radio. Call. Welcome back I'm Larry Kudlow it's Larry Kudlow show that so you can tweet me at Larry underscore Kudlow and buy the book the book j.f.k. And the Reagan revolution it's all about tax cuts and the dollar and all the things we've been talking about. And current politics so you might want to buy that book hate to push it but there you go on pushing it anyway I want to. I tell you it's a theme President Trump out of about giving several interviews news conferences and whatnot perhaps some changes in policies perhaps not one of the people he interviewed with as our next guest Michael Goodwin Pulitzer Prize winning journalist in The New York Post columnist and a Fox News commentator. Michael welcome back 1st of all and Happy Passover Easter 2nd of all. Thank you for doing this and not quite sure I'm actually hearing you know there you are much oh Larry much better for you thank you for giving us your your Easter Passover weekend so I I read your interview. Very carefully and with great interest and I want to ask you know everyone's talking about names who's up and who's down and all the palace intrigue stuff but I guess from your standpoint veteran political observer writer analysts and so forth has President Trump actually shifted philosophically to the center as some people are saying and away from some of the more nationalistic you know border security immigration refugee type issues that he highlighted in the campaign do you think apart from the gossip Michael Goodwin has he in fact changed. I don't think in fundamental ways I for example I think that you can you can line up the campaign promises and then the other ledger line up all of the events are actions he's actually taken and I think there's a pretty close correlation for example I don't really see any deviation on the immigration issue I think he's quite serious about building a wall we know that he tried on the refugee issue twice with 2 executive orders that were both held up by the courts. And I think that Jeff Sessions is carrying through with it with the idea of. Deporting illegal aliens who have committed crimes I mean I think that the sanctuary city issue is really in their sights. So I think on that issue for example I think he's been very consistent. I think on on matters of trade we'll see. His meeting with President Xi of China. I thought went well as an icebreaker the president basically said I'm not going to call them a currency manipulator and talk to get a better trade deal if they help us with North Korea I guess you could say that's somewhat of a deviation but we don't really know the details yet and you might also argue that if unless it's a terrible deal the North Korea issues so important. And so emerges some so much of an emergency that you could understand the trade if there is a trade involved. And on taxes I know what you're very concerned about I am too but a slightly different way and that is I don't know where Congress is at all I mean I have found the torpor of the House particularly bothersome from the very beginning I don't know what Paul Ryan is doing he seems almost to be operating independently of the president's agenda and I think I think this is Ryan I think the way he held himself off from the president during the campaign they occasionally come together and then they seem to go their separate ways Mitch McConnell was very silent on Obamacare has been really silent on taxes. So I think the congressional aspect of the president's agenda to me is unclear at best but you would necessarily conclude that his campaign agenda and just kicking off some of the things you said the wall the vetting of the refugees the deportation the sanctuary cities I could probably add to that the emphasis on Law and Order for example I mean what Michael just you please correct me if this is wrong but I read all this stuff on line in papers. I hate to use this word but I'm going to use it anyways the so-called mainstream media. They I think they want Trump this is an imagination thing they want Trump to be a centrist and they want him to move away from all the campaign stuff the tough stuff the law and order stuff the security stuff and so they're finding ways and means to do that with respect to some of the city or senior staff people who's in who's out who's up and who's down but actually as I listen to you he's not making big changes he's not making big changes at all well I think not to say that they won't come but I think the evidence is scarce so far of any wholesale remaking on the campaign promises you know and as to the media's interpretation of this. I have a somewhat more cynical view which is that they they will damn him for moving to the middle even though a stance oblique that's what they want for them it's another way to criticize him to point him out as a phony as a liar to say he betrayed is supporters. So I don't know that they are an accurate or fair gauge of what's actually going on and I also think Larry you and I have been around the track enough times to know that some of these labels about centrist and everything they don't always match up I mean you can be pragmatic on one aspect and quite doctrinaire Orthodox on another at the same time so I think they don't do justice to the complexity of these issues I mean without getting too deep into the weeds but you're right on this point the complexity. Everybody's picking on Steve Bannon this is the moment you know the back. Down I get see your interviewee. Was really forceful about Steve Bannon in favor of that he he didn't cut a lot. I don't know how you maybe just before I can he give me is a sense that when you heard his response to Steve Bannon What was your thought well you know I asked the question of of the president during my interview do you have confidence. And I think that's the the right way to gauge the relationship between any superior and subordinate and the answer was yes but I like him but. So there were there were some pretty big butts in the answer and so my view is that Bennett is probably on thin ice. I'm actually writing about this for my column to Laurel and I think that the uproar over the president's comments in my interview and subsequent ones one with the Wall Street Journal. Should alarm the president because it's not clear to a lot of the so-called deplorable people who voted for Donald Trump and probably gave him a victory in Pennsylvania and Michigan and Wisconsin and places like that it's not clear at all that they are wedded to trump permanently because Ben and spoke to them and they credit Bannan with guiding the campaign in their direction now Trump disputes that I mean that's port part of what seems to be going on here Trump feels abandoned is getting too much credit whereas Trump feels that hey I'm my own strategist I mean use those exact words to me. But I but I do think that if he does jettison Bannan wholesale I'm a diminishing him is one thing it's hard to read but if he's out of the White House then I think the president is going to face a lot of blowback from supporters on a fundamental tenet of who he is and what his presidency is about that's more than any one campaign promise that is fundamental to the idea that you are the disrupter of Washington as usual and I think that's the gorilla in the room here lie all these things we're talking about is is this going to be a Goldman Sachs president or is it going to be a deplorable presidency now in reality it has to be a bit of both but there's a fight going on it seems to me is a fight going on for the presidency within the White House and within the term constituents that before we take a break. There's another name I want to inject Ok so Bannon may be on thin ice he may be demoted or in fact pushed out the door and that's what I think you're saying those are the options. But there's another chap who's very important guy and that's Steve Miller who I worked with in the campaign Steve Miller is a very senior guy he's a very powerful guy among his many duties he's a presidential speechwriter but he also kind of holds the scrolls of the trunk policies if you will and you know we talk about a Goldman Sachs presidency or trump moving to the center and Steve Bannon losing Steve Miller is best I can tell is us sending he's a stronger stronger than ever I know I'm rather well I have a lot of respect for him and he's attached cutting supply sider but he's tough on trade tough on immigration and so forth kind of the baton issues such as wonder how much does Trump really change and if one of his key guys inner circle guy like Steve Miller is still very much around Well I think that that gets to the heart of some of the confusion about Ben and himself. A lot of the president's unhappiness with Bannan as I understand it is has to do with the infighting and maybe the leaking as well that there have been numerous reports about infighting within the White House and m.s.n. B.c. For example has openly said that Bannon has been leaking unflattering stories about Jarrett cushion or no I have no idea whether that's true but it may be that the president knows this or believes this and. So it may not be so much a policy issue as it is a conduct issue. And that would be something I think we could all understand I mean there's got if you're here losing the fight in the White House to the president's son in law or to anybody else and you want to take that public then you might have forfeited the trust of the president and that's what I heard in him was this lack of confidence where he ended by saying I've told them straighten this out or I will he clearly was acknowledging that there is a lot of infighting and it's gotten to the point where he is annoying by it and he wants it to end and he seems to be pointing the finger at band van and directly annoyed more by personalities or in this case the personality a case you know with my experience with candidates. You don't like people who get out and front of their skis Yeah or even worse you don't like people who get out in front of his skis. Right and I think that balance came close to that well yeah and I mean the cover in Time magazine has been bandied about it I would also think you know Larry there is an element here of this is what the mainstream media does to every Republican president Bill Kristol of course Dan Quayle as vice president Bill Kristol was called Dan Dan Quayle's brain Steve Bannon is being called Donald Trump's brain or conscience or is rescued and. You had the same thing with Ronald Reagan the amiable dunce somebody had the thing for him George Bush Karl Rove got all the credit for everything and all the blame too so if you didn't hear the Barack Obama one of his aides was brain you didn't hear that about Bill Clinton either you only hear about Republicans leading the way of rip of the media labeling Republicans as dumb Michael you know this. Republican presidents are all dummies Yeah right has to be absolutely right why they get elected. I can't take a break a producer is screaming at me hand they were talking to Michael go and polled surprise winner New York Post columnist recently interviewed President down shot much more common I'm called La Please stay with us Larry Kudlow show.
