Thanks for being here this morning. So much to talk about this one a. Lot of people. Yesterday from the Washington Free Beacon new study out Philip Philadelphia tax makes soda more expensive than beer the Tax Foundation released a new study on the excise tax last week finding that a $1.00 cent per ounce tax has fallen short of revenue projections cost jobs and has forced some citizens of Philadelphia to drive outside the city to buy groceries The study finds that the tax is $24.00 times higher than the Pennsylvania tax rate on beer purchases a beer and a less expensive than non alcoholic beverages subject to the tax in the city according to the study written by Courtney short and Scott. Empirical evidence from a 2012 Journal article suggests that soda taxes can push consumers to alcohol meaning it is likely the case that consumers are switching to alcoholic beverages as a result of the tax the paper aptly titled from coke to Corps further shows that switching from soda to beer increases caloric intake even as soda taxes are generally aimed at caloric reduction the Tax Foundation points out that unlike most cities Philadelphia passed the tax pacifically to raise revenue not to fight obesity the city even includes diet sodas in its tax as a way to raise money for pre-kindergarten program however less than half of the $39400000.00 collected since a tax went into effect on January 1st has gone to education funding. So sales in Philadelphia also declined since attacks went into effect at the beginning of 2017 threatening the long run sustainability of the tax they write according to some local distributors and retailer sales have declined by nearly 50 percent this is likely due to higher prices which discourage purchasing beverages in the city. Earlier this year Pepsi Co announced it was laying off up to $100.00 workers because of the tax which the companies blame for the costing a 43 percent drop in business will of course that it's going to happen. Citizens of Philadelphia no longer able to buy 12 packs or 2 leaders of Pepsi products in grocery stores due to the tax the tax foundation said from an operational standpoint the tax rollout continues to create problems for the city as collections have come in less than projected the Tax Foundation added in July city officials lowered beverage tax revenue projections by 14 percent leaving the pre-kindergarten programs that the tax promise to fund in jeopardy Furthermore So the taxes are regressive hurting low income earners the most Philadelphia's experience serves as a cautionary tale for other areas Wayne similar beverage taxes the group said so there you go well. You know this this whole promise it was going to bring money and remember what the the city leaders did after they started after the retailer started advertising why. It was the cost was going up and then of course because they weren't absorbing the cost then they got mad the city leaders you should absorb the cost it was greatness like the big the you know basically the big box stores need to be paying this. Now they pass along to you but you're not taxing them you're taxing the consumer. Yeah you know you just said they wanted it to be a typical you know because at that at that point they were trying to turn it into some kind of hidden tax so it doesn't have an impact in the large companies going to absorb this they have the money to absorb this on never forget that they they've this this is just disgusting that they're not absorbing it but I'm going to know. C.n.n. Pulled this from The Daily Caller c.n.n. Pulled the headline Tuesday afternoon referring to a memo issued by the now fired Google employee as an anti diversity memo changing it to a controversy Oh manifesto engineer behind the anti diversity memo was out of Google read cnn's initial headline on the c.n.n. Tech website roughly a half hour later c.n.n. Changed it to engineer behind controversy all manifesto is out at Google Earth now the interesting point is when we actually go through what was written. By different media on it. And the analysis and I read the whole thing yesterday and we just before the top of the hour when the symbol of what he's you know with the engineer was saying was not anti diversity simply he simply was saying look there are differences between men and women that we need to acknowledge that if you're saying that that we don't have the exact same number of women or it's harder to find women in this that it's not necessarily just because we have a sexist society that there are differences in men and women and not that some women aren't extremely interested in things that men would be interested in and vice versa or it's the fact that over all the research has shown women are drawn to different things than men. In different professions. And it's because of the differences of the sexes it's the Lifetime channel versus Spike t.v. . Yes. And we know we know that there are programs that Hollywood targets. Women only well I mean if you look at lifetime and you look at and you watch Spike t.v. You know the difference in the audience is you know by the The Because what you see is the demographics and then turn the advertisers that show off to cater to those demographics but then the nature of the programming if that didn't if the advertising itself didn't tell you the nature of the programming clearly does. So a couple of conservative outlets did they go through what the liberal media looked at this oh this is from the Federalists dot com brief Peyton The Washington Post the newspaper which likes to remind us that democracy dies in darkness posted this doll right lie about the whole affair and snapshot a Google engineer said women may be genetically unsuited for tech jobs here are the most shocking parts of his essay The engineer never once said that women are genetically unsuited for tech jobs saying that men and women are different in that ignoring those differences will harm employees by causing stress or creating tensions is not the same as saying that someone is genetically unsuited for a particular job and they go to c.n.n. And the tweet Google c.e.o. Cuts vacations short to address controversial memo that argued women aren't biologically fit for tech jobs the subtitle on the article linked in the tweet is bonkers. That the Google c.e.o. Has condemned portions of the controversial memo sent by the male engineer at the company who argued that women are not biologically fit protect roles the now fired Google or number one states that women are biologically unfit the men will merely states that men women are biologically different and that those differences need to be embraced because pretending these differences don't exist is harming the mental health of women in the office as evidence by higher levels of anxiety among female employees Time magazine a magazine that's been slowly dying for nearly a decade published a write up on the deal calling the memo a tirade tirade in their headline. Is anyone's actually read the memo it's clear that that was the least accurate way to describe it it's calm it's rational it's not angry at all or rant like then the bench Shapiro. From the Daily Wire did the same thing things that Google manifesto doesn't say that the media claimed that it did and there it is number one women are biologically unfit for tax c.n.n. Actually ran a segment today claiming that that was the suggestion from the engineer it's patently false in fact he says the opposite the media seem to completely be completely unable to comprehend the difference between the statement women on average are different from men and this particular woman is different from this particular man. And that's because the media are stupid on average. But here is the engineer and explicitly stating that women are not unqualified as individuals I'm not saying that all men differ from all women in the following ways or that these differences are just I'm simply stating that the distribution of preference and abilities of men and women different part due to biological causes that these differences may explain why we don't see equal representation of women in tech and leadership many of these differences are small and there are significant overlap between men and women so you can't say anything about an individual given the population level distributions I you know and and while he's not making that point that they are the differences are just I would say that in some cases those those differences are trust because it it's who we are oh no no no no no I don't think you meant that kind of just I sorry I should have qualified that it's like that that they're just differences that's how I think he meant it he didn't mean that they're not he was looking at that whether they're just in a moral way he wasn't making that kind of are we sure about that I think that's how I viewed it yes that's only half. A little. Later on what you allege to look at the actual way that he you know I mean I've seen it I've read it but I tell you differently you know that's what he was that he was talking about because I his entire analysis wasn't about whether it the point of it wasn't to determine whether it was just only to point out the differences Ok . Oh I could be too all right but I would go on to say you know because of what we do here what he was doing there is of ever very different job than what we do here what we do here is we comment on things in the news and I would say that those differences in fact are just to the degree that if they are the makeup of who a individual is regardless of their gender then of course it's just a difference is it because that's how one person is made versus another whether it's an entire group of people versus then and the other group of people this male versus Or as opposed to a female is one thing or we'll get back to the you know what what they have used for years the idea that I was born this way so to that end they are just but it's Ok Because here's the thing if we don't recognize where the the differences are how do we find the strengths and each individual and that and they reiterate that later on in the memo I'm also not saying that we should restrict people to certain gender roles when I'm advocating for quite the opposite treat people as individuals not as just another member of their group and right right to see exact that's tribalism right because because if the idea is to go out and say we need to be more active and in creating diversification for the sake of diversification I think within the company or let's say in the military or wherever your trying to recruit people to do something any particular job then you look for that person to meet that certain standard you want the best person for that job. Because it's always implied the whole the implication is that the door is being shot on an entire group of people off I'm not saying sexism doesn't exist but let's take a look at the dynamic in and then talk about Ok Why is this group as a whole less likely to be drawn to this line of work and what is it that they are really great at in this line of work. I happen to know firsthand because I have a few of them and my family but analysts and you talk about breaking down and seeing something that a lot of people have via look at it I see a bunch of numbers on a page and I see a grid or or a spreadsheet and I can't make heads or tails of it and people I'm very close to see something and are great at seeing they're almost to the level of a savant you know I mean you're looking for the you're looking for the strength of any individual to be to be the best in that particular role the other thing the diversity is bad is what he was promoting and he says the opposite by stating I value diversity and inclusion and actually he offers an entire section of his memo devoted to nondiscriminatory ways to reduce the gender gap. Sexism and sexism doesn't exist never said that in fact he said the opposite right right now it's clear that I'm not saying that diversity is bad that Google or society is 100 percent fair that we should try to correct for those existing biases that minorities have the same experience of those in the majority my larger point is that we have an intolerance for ideas and evidence that don't fit a certain ideology and so you know again everything that they were claiming that he was saying was not what he was saying you know that's the kind of react now because you can't you have real you can't say in today's world this is what it's become. To the point that he lost his job at this massive company to the point that the c.e.o. Of that company came off a vacation in order to fire the guy because we can't have anybody point out that there are differences between people even groups of people it doesn't mean that one as last now by the way just like Collin Caprona he's sui
