So just before we ducked back into the phones I want to wrap up that caller from the top of the hour asking about whether he thought I felt that there could be a demonic influence that's causing a spike in high school shooter related suicides. And I I will tell you that I I mean I can't answer that I don't have any data on that nor do I have any particular insight but I am always reminded and it's worth a consideration I think of the work of a famous French been in the late teens with the fifty's and sixty's a meal Durkheim a guy who did a study on how the suicide rate in rural France had spiked during the industrial revolution. And this was super unusual. People were committing suicide in a rate that was unheard of in these rural parts of France and he saw some sort of conclusion as to what was the cause of this spike there have been other studies by the way about like in America America. In Europe during the height of Calvinism in the Protestant revolution suicide rates went way up because people were convinced that there was a better life waiting for them on the other side and they were hearing these messages of your life your might suck but you know you get to heaven and it's just it's it's all unicorns and rainbows and so people were committing suicide and that was an interesting dial down of the rhetoric after that to not make people feel like this worthless life isn't worth living and just to fast forward again to this industrial revolution thing it's really interesting to consider whether Durkheim was right in his conclusions that the reason why suicides spike in agricultural areas in these small towns in France was because the industrial revolution had presented another option that other people felt that they couldn't live up to. That going to the city and becoming a successful industrialist or working within this new economy of industry was the way to go and it depressed people. And if it had been a fairly simple life I think in rural France for example where if you were a farmer you had you gave birth to more farmers or farmers you know wives or whatever if you were a baker or your kids were expected to be bakers if you were a tailor your kids were expected to be tailors and it was a very that part of your life was done it was other aspects like Who are you going to marry how many children going to have are they going to survive diseases that was different but the industrial revolution came along and said you should be rich you should be trying to become rich you should be going to the city you should abandon this and that's part of what cause the spike in suicides No in this country I don't think a lot of rates of change I think for example among white males in America it's there isn't a big deviation they're not the ones most likely to commit suicide in fact I think it's still Native Americans. Native American. Native American males and females are the most likely to commit suicide very sad but I think as of that last report I read that was still true so no easy answer but definitely a great question thanks for joining us on Coast to Coast Bradford is west of the Rockies. In Angels Camp California I don't think I know where that is Bradford Angels Camp. Bradford. Bradford did you fall asleep. For if you're hearing my voice send me all your money. Get up in the morning just to thank you. Write a check send it to. Bradford if you're listening in your sleep know that we love you sorry you were left on hold that long we'll try never to let that happen again maybe that'll be the thought that will stick with you let's find out whether for God let's not have to narrow Steve from Norman Oklahoma are you hanging on on Coast to Coast Steve Yeah I'm here. We're already we're already head of the game that yes we are. I want to share 2 ghost experiences I had as a child Sure. One was my 1st one was when I was about 8 o'clock 8 years old. I was asleep in my bedroom. My bed was right in front of the hallway and I always let my mom always let me leave the light on in the hallway sure I was going stream way afraid of the dark right. But I couldn't sleep and I was. Not my eyes kind of gave them the house on the hallway and I had and I saw a figure come around the corner and stand in the. Doorway and he was dressed as a kind of a gangster alltime gangster really wearing one of those. Hats to have the flip over lid and like a foot or a kind of like of like a door right in like a pinstripe suit and spats or something like the he was a he was kind of like a leather jacket and old. I wouldn't say blue jeans but some old boundaries Yeah Hungary's and grease Yes but his eyes were red and he. Grand like an evil Willy grand thing. And I was so frightened. My brother was right. We both slept in twin beds and he was right beside me with a desk in between us sure and I tried to yell out to him in my voice I just couldn't them of oyster to raise my voice. And it faded away right in front of me. And my 2nd when one was when I was around 11. And the 1st one happened around 2 or 3 in the morning. But the 2nd one was when I was it was about 10 o'clock I was in bed I was in the same room but my brother had moved out to another bedroom. By bed was not facing. It was not facing the hallway. And I could hear my mom working in the kitchen doing dishes. But I saw this little lady come into my room she was in a month's robe and her nose was sticking out like an old evil witch bike and Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs and she was floating I know that sounds really strange but shoes clothing and she floated right through me. But that feel like as you remember it you know it I really couldn't. Sad I felt really different but. It was just exist a weird. Happening when I didn't have any like an inward confession. But. You know I wasn't scared like I was the 1st time but what what's your take away from that all these years later well my my family was always really were religious and. There were devout Christians and I always would I always look at the you know the 1st who was always demonic. And there's I don't I don't have any other way to explain it and I never really did ever shared it with my family I was just chill with my friends but I never told my mom and dad about it but you know there's. You know a lot of people think they're disappointed spirits or whatever but I was specially the 1st one I thought it was kind of demonic. To fear I felt when it was in the room. But yet you didn't feel that way when it was a witch that passed through you correct. That's going to strike out here just how to ratify it how stupid. I can't. Just. You know it might have been possible that you know I imagine the 1st thing the 2nd one. Is a look so funny but. But not that I know I know for certain the 1st one is we'll. Leave it there take your witness Thanks for sharing it that's what open life is all about do we still have Joe east of the Rockies Dan. Ok Joe from Long Island on coast to coast am Joe high end I don't. You know I took consider coast to coast pop culture and how it's done but I consider you coast to coast pop culture. But I just want to say to Cornelius he should look into doing movie extras and no woman has a pretty big movie industry you know that would be a way to hang out with some Hollywood people but I was going to ask you what she's like steroids and sports. And matches not kind of ties and trying to be done you know really aren't type of thing a little bit or I consider that a contradiction someone getting in touch and then doing something mounted on my compromise or how what was your take on the whole issue well I mean I think. I'm not sure what. Enhanced means we're talking about if you really think about it gator raid was a scientific invent you know invention at the University of Florida to help athletes perform in a particular environment that where they lost a lot of water and and salt in their in their systems through the course of the game and they came up with a solution for that which they gave to their players which gave them a competitive advantage and we think of that as being quite normal and I think we look even at the all of the breakthroughs in nutrition. And how athletes eat better workout more sensibly that's still part of the same idea is being better than you would be quote unquote naturally so I think steroids if you're talking about doing something that's a performance enhancing drug. You know. I think we all. I hate to have see anybody take anything that ruins their life or shortens their life just for a short performance but people do the same thing by smoking and drinking and doing whatever that shortens their life but they have more pleasure in the meantime or so they would think so I'm not I'm not sure I take a very strong position against Arabs I think that has to be winner take about competitive sports they have to agree on a horizon line of what is and what is not acceptable so I think that part is different they should they should make an apply evenly rules on that but in terms of what anybody should be able to do individually I don't know why they I think I don't know that I see anything other than dotted lines between a lot of these things which people call performance enhancers but what's your thought on the. Well I just think it's I just wanted the psych how would she. Like looking at a picture of Jackie. Courtesy of my mom's I believe Jackie I mean I believe a ball shape. And why would she make to do all that effort time you know to you know all that long laborious work you know for months on end to get like that and I had a performance enhancing drug on top of that that would risk all of that because she's an athlete and that's what athletes do they're always trying to shave a half 2nd right you know it's a half that it's a 10th of a 2nd at 10th of a 2nd that's how that's how close the largest national I think of to make a difference and they are well there you go one of those Yeah exactly but I mean and you look at the number look at Ryan Lochte he and other people who are you know involved in taking things which they shouldn't have taken but that's how you know the idea to it's not just a matter of how you perform in the middle of race it's how you heal from a performance and from workouts and so a lot of people a lot of the athletes take it because it helps them heal like when they were younger so they can push themselves harder and still get the same effect of the self healing body. But yeah I don't know appreciate it always interesting thoughts let me move on and get to some people for the bottom of the hour let me go to Jake who's in New Hampshire on coast to coast am Jake there her hey you're on the open lines. Good. Good I watched them on number of a flatter barrier if covered by a drone I would write. Code are being said. We have snowflake machines rain machines tornado machines and then you know what the sun shining 100 days of laughter Now you explain away. Yeah I mean I can't quite imagine the flat earth argument lasting more than a decade I just I don't I can't see it through the way that the flat earth others do I know they have an answer for everything but yeah I was watching Frozen Planet and I was you know they were so on about or or Boreal or so when I write about I guess you know yeah yeah I mean it or how about it just a plain old eclipse so there's a like an eclipse machine that. Is an eclipse machine or a house like machine it doesn't. Ever And you know yeah I mean I don't get it. And that much of course our record was. Awful you know 2000 years ago you know who the real masters are not American to make. Americanised but your tongue so we have as we we have a succession of names like even the name Jesus is is not it's not Merican eyes but it is it is a form of having been Latinized. And so you know all of the disciples would have had. Hebrew names and they were written with the Hebrew alphabet and so then then you have whether it's the Latin Vulgate or whether it's in Greek you have to have those letters transliterated into another language so we don't have matching letters for every letter for example of the of the of the Latin alphabet just to give an example so right away you're going to have to make choices that's why you know in Spanish James i
