Quick note here I don't know why the audio book is set to buy tomorrow if it keeps going to space tomorrow it will have sold more audio books than the book people are going on Audible. That's going to get i Tunes to most people getting all of which I highly recommend getting ot of all dot com so you can just buy the book by the book on Amazon but the are you buy the audio book online so you might even going to Amazon you buy the paperback you might like audiobook all on Amazon but I recommend a subscription because I love audible I listen to audio books the time people ask how I can read so many books and one of them is you listen to them and also if you're reading a hard book I get a difficult book. I read it while listening to it because you know when you read sometimes your mind kind of goes scattering and you have to reread a page a couple times yeah it's really don't know any more all the time going all the time like I'll hit a wall especially like with the 48 Laws of Power or something where you get it and you read something that's so profound and then you start relating it to your life but you keep reading and you're going to learn totally gone so if you have the audiobook playing as you read it just keeps you going keeps you moving forward at a. Solid clip if you're a slow reader you're not really a slow reader there's a ton of interesting. Work we're going to. Go I'm going to like go and moan like the whole thing right now so people are really fast and reading it's their eyes this is the whole speed reading thing it's your eyes that's the limiting factor of how fast you can read and interpret to tell quickly your eyes can move it's not how much your brain can interpret and I fast you can read the tuffet past your eyes move anyway you get the audiobook you get on Amazon or i Tunes Radio Chris Kate is here the city council member what's going on Chris. Interesting. I want to. Know I'm a big 100 percent serious. Yeah I've never heard that before keeps you moving. So well now are you good where should we start Chris let me start with this Neighborhood Watch thing that you want to chat about because I want to hear about it and then I'm going to talk I want to ask you about what I think is the biggest pressing most important issue for the present and future of San Diego that's that's what I that's what I think this big topic is that's how I write that's the level of importance but what neighborhood watch give us the latest. So today we were able to undervalue on a new neighbor group in Kearney made so there's actually a bed just on the side of the Flies and the bow bow that all people know about called Royal Highland and it's just south of elbow by the convoy district area they are new never wash here but it's a great opportunity for us to promote neighborhood watch in general now I mean it's not like the old neighborhood watch groups of the past we know we have online platforms like next door and Facebook now it's really easier interact with your neighbors and really trying to just reinforce that people need to get the other neighbors they need take care of the Neighborhood Watch out for each other one of the neighborhood they can ship one of the Neighborhood Watch look like these days. I mean it's every Donita me on a quarterly basis now because you can establish a group now right you can establish next door groups and you can message each other now as opposed to having to come together. Every week or every month then add a meeting about we now you can communicate on your phone so much easier than you can. So you can either easily send a message to your groups. Would you do my looking after my house while I'm on vacation this weekend and someone that goes out driving by is always either interact now but the idea behind all this is to make sure people interact with each other and look after each other and develop that relationship the police department so we have a great working relationship with p.d. They will come out they will update both on the neighborhoods whether they died for a rash of car break or more of a rash of people trying to enter their home and kind of. Their individual neighborhood what's going on now is a good thing so if someone wanted to start an official neighborhood watch right and maybe then like you said in coordination with the police department federal How should they go about doing that is that a thing. That they actually a lot of help members really hard and sort of working on and I know that memory is the same thing and so for example if you live in whatever the my district all you would do is you get your neighbors together on your blog and call on the hey we want to start a new neighborhood watch group and he said he will come out during the week during the night talk about everything to it so for a crime that's about what's on your neighborhood and then if you get we got. To really be engaged be a part of it fly off the block a for the sign for you on that investment put on your blog. Things are very good I haven't heard about neighborhood watches in front of but obviously we've all seen those signs in the past but nice to know that it's coming back I like it very good . Anything else on that no sir I think that's excellent committed and I think it's a good thing good good throwback if you will. Like I said I think this is the most important thing in San Diego. And it's the price of housing and just housing in general so let me just cut great to the change one of the city council do the other day what has been decided so far. Earlier this week the city council held kind of a. Summit to point. Out for sure like a call that where we were able to take action on a number of different tools that. To heat up the process. As well as looked at ways to reduce the cost. Through the creation. Of a granny flat 3 unit that they are. Looking at different ways to. Act on streamlining reducing cost whatever we can do to allow. Cities built in the city and I. One of the. Top if not the top issue facing San Diego but every city across a. Way to reduce the price of. Water use this I know one reason it's so hard for you as a council member I want to mark Hersey's. Town hall the other day and there's a place going up in p.q. That will eliminate some affordable housing units to build some other housing units for middle class housing units and everyone's up in arms and there's so many people . With so many completely opposite needs. Listen with one group the people who already have their say and don't want more housing built anywhere in the city let alone next to them what do you what's your argument to them. Well unfortunately the times are like they have been in the past that. The issue that I. I tell them about it Look I was born a rating they need to go I'm fortunate to have a house here but I want my kids to be able live here as well too and I want their kids to live here I want to have good jobs in San Diego I want to make sure that the kids are going to college now how they build they have a job here and can afford to live here I also talked to have a public it's been a as well to we don't have a lot of actual police officers who actually live in the city of San Diego but with a new place Department we don't have raided your station and Miramar who lives around the base if you talk to the commanding officer at Miramar he will tell you that we have Marines right now who drive down from. To work at Miramar and that's his that's a public safety issue so I mean we we have to be able to be in a position where ever we can accommodate rose and it's not just people who are moving to San Diego it's people who are or in raising a Diego we want them to stay here and all wait to do that is to have housing that is affordable for them to be here. Persimmon a good point in that in the town hall that it's really hard to recruit businesses to come to San Diego because they know they have to pay their employees the tone of money if it were in their to the relocate people here and then pay people to the money if they want to actually buy a house here and that's a major factor for businesses I'm sure you've talked to business owners about this one of them saying. They're saying that they that I mean and I'll flip it on the other side as well is that. If we have students who are graduating and they want to work here but they see that they're going to be paying 50 to 60 percent of their salary the housing they just simply can't afford it with everything else they're not going to stay here so we're going to actually you know lose tell because they're going to try to find a job elsewhere where they can actually afford to live so it works both ways not only from an employer side but also employee side and I want to just. A year and work here and those are that's a double edged sword that we can survive as a result on in the year and then Diego by having employers not start businesses here located here or have good employees leaving Diego to work elsewhere so who is going to harm someone is that the reforms that you guys pass in the day speed up the process of building all these and then the granny flat like is that even enough like right and how much of it was all make and then also you're going to get every time you do this because the last I saw the last 5 housing developments that have been proposed in San Diego people are shooting it down every single day. So how are you going to get past that and not it's not going to solve the problem and I know what I said that what we adopted this week will will solve the problem in there and there is no silver bullet Yeah I mean for complex issues like this there never is a silver bullet more like silver buckshot or you have a number of different tools 'd that have to be adopted to allow for growth but it gets us on the path I think what's encouraging is that we have a mayor we have a council who really see this as a top priority and are willing to do more to allow for it but you but you're absolutely right I mean I think what I what I've told some of your council members as well too it's great to have a discussion about whether or not we should have more housing in San Diego but when push comes to such shove and you actually have to vote on a larger project and you have a roomful of people who don't like it and there and they're screaming about it what are you going to do are you actually going to to vote for more density more housing and areas where you know it's not going to be perhaps in the best to be you of the residents who already live there today super hard hit there they're very hard choices and I know we talked about one develop project Carmel Valley. I know a lot of the last couple years you know the funny thing about. Bill is housing projects are needed and it's housing on all levels not just the more subsidized housing but also. In which we haven't built any yet you can sense when it's either that luxury housing or affordable housing right yeah yeah there's what do we do about those middle class good folks who need homes as well too and I know the merits of a lot of effort to figure out ways to encourage that type of development as well. You're the man Final thoughts Chris. Now there's a lot going on that's for sure but it's a lot of fun this is the definite best job in the world and we're able to work with folks every single day and try to tackle some of these complex issues and it's never easy you're never going to please everybody but I think we're all trying to do what we can from our coach from our our principal ways to to make the needle better and I think what's going to be this issue is it seems like you said there's some sort of this everyone's on the same page with it's a problem and this will start from there and some and as you guys are already passing a couple things here and there so let's keep the momentum going to present your bill thank my things but I have an awesome day I want to break all that down a little bit more here coming up next I want to give you a specific example of a housing development that is being proposed everything's perfect except the people around the don't want and that's so what is going to happen. And I want to talk about the ramifications of this because as a homeowner I want housing prices to go up up up up up up up up up up up I want them to skyrocket I want I want the value of my house to increase 20 fold in the next year teams like they are at this point that's right but I also need I realize how destructive that is for the city our city truly can't function at this pace but there's one saving grace.
