A short time later the all clear was sounded and the meeting was able to continue one of the hardest hit areas today was in des moines. Moines. Thats where a tornado touched down at the international airport. Widespread damage was reported in neighborhoods around the metro area. Significant damage was also reported in nearby knoxville, where witnesses say a tornado ripped part of the roof off a walmart. Fortunately, no serious injuries have been reported. There was a blackout today in iowa city. But it had nothing to do with the weather. Weather. The university of missouri has been under fire for the way theyve handled racist incidents. People at ui say theyre only one step from being in ththsame boat. Boat. No justice, no peace no justice, no peace peace its important its important that we share their message because its the same message. The shouts on the university of iowa campus were the opposite of what university of missouri students heard on wednesday. After gaining National Attention for rhe way racist incidents were handled at mizzou, ustudents felt it was timemeo speak up. Up. No justice, no peace peace were family, were black hawkeyes, we support the people in mizzou, we love yall. Yall. Everybody deserves the right to Higher Education and they shouldnt feel scared to be on campus. Students say the discrimination doesnt end at mizzou. Mizzou. Donthink about what you would do in the 1960s, if you were in that era like during civil rights, because were that now. They say theyve been feeling the effects s their own school. School. Most predominantely white institutions like iowa is and mizzou is then youll have the same things kind of happening and so almost as a message to our campus, that were fighting for equality and freedom and to be able to sit in our classrooms and not be ostrazed andmarginalized. Marginalized. We all know that it exists, it takes catatasts, so the fact that we got this going today leads into the next time that we have. Have. Veterans day was celebrated by the young and old. In fact, one of the areas oldest veterans. Veterans. 94yearold donald marx, was recognized for his s service during worldldwar two. The entire audience at the Veterans Memorial building downtown, stood and appluaded his service and sacrifice. Larry van lanckerwas also recognized for the work he es heheing stock food pantries for vets. He received the veteran of the year award. His grandson jackso even asked his mom if he could skip school, to be part of the onceinalifetime moment. It just makes me feel really great to know that the community is helping out our veterans, and that veterans are being recognized for their services. And for what they do for other veverans in our community and it just makes me feel great that my grandpa was picked this year for that larry holds a fundraiser each ar to help stock the veterans food pantry. Hyvee continued a tradition this year, serving their annual veterans Day Breakfast for veterans, active military members and their spouses. Hyvee also hh been asking customers to round up their grocery bill to the nearest dollar. All the money raised will go to their Homefront Initiative which supports veterans and several organizations. The Homefront Initiative runs through sunday. Some veterans were also being treated to free haircuts. Great clips offered the free service to vets. They also gave customers free haircut cards to give e to someone they know who served our country. In waterloo today todaycongressman rod blum marked veterans day by making several stops in his district. District. The congressman met with veterans, thanking them for their support at becks restaurant. Blum says getting the chance to meet those who served their country is one of its like a living history book, i met people that have bronze stars this morning, i met a pow from vietnam that spent four years in captivity. I met a couple of gentlemen from world war ii. I mean, thats a history book. Ok. Blum even worked a shift himself at becks to get a feel for how the business is operating. Captain n shaela bresnan of the army reserve is preparing to leave immediate family. And an extended family of 300 art students. Its really a privilege to be able to deploy. We spend up to five years training for the portunity to go o or and do the jobs weve been trained for. Its the second time shes going to afghanistan and the objective is the same. To is to make sure that every soldier has a bed to sleep in, has a hot meal and has a safe environment that they can come home to when theyre finished with their mission. About 40 soldiers are training to be deployed in a few days. Some fofothe first time. This is something ive always wanted to do i feel like this is how i get to serve. As a veteran. By going on this deploymentsoldiers say part of being ithe army reserve is understanding that you can be called for dututat any ime. As a soldier, i havent been through it yet, but i can say personally that its going to be a very emotional time. My family is going to be there. Bresnan says for her. Veterans day isnt just about recognizing service men and women. But also those who make them able to do their jobs. The backbone of the military is their Service Members. The support of the Service Members comes from their family and their families are able to support them because of the theres a problem many servicemen and women face when they come home from those deployments in the form of crippling debt. I was in World War Two fella and i know what its about. Ron knew what was happening back home this was not his fathers war. I becamamproud of my service, i mean i think i always was and my family certainly was but publically i wasnt afraid to speak out anymore. Thats why freshman moan jones joined a new group at her School Called the Fearless Initiative. Its about wanting to live too, feeling empowered, feeling good about yourself and who you are. Katie bergmann didntlways feel that way. She was once hospitalized with suicidal thoughts. Now shes raising awareness and helping her peers. Weve taken it from Suicide Prevention to all of the things that come before that and all of t things that surround that. Katie and mrs. English started the Fearless Initiative because they both saw a need teens dealing with body image issues, anxiety, and just trying to balance everything with added pressure from social media. Everything they do is publicized. Mistakeses arent just little mistakes anymore. Theyre out for everybody to see. It felt like a safe place to me because i pressure and stuff like that. The fearless itiative provides a place for teens to talk face to face. The group recently took part in a Suicide Prevention walk. They also hear from experts on everything from staying healthy to lf defense. There are signs all around that the feararss initiative is having an impact outside the club, from positive messages on the lockers, to the way they recognize and reach out to classmates who need help. Other schools should have Something Like this because every Single Person is struggling with something. Thats the plan once the leaders of the program determine what works. But parents can have their Fearless Initiative at home. Ask about the childs day, things coming up, the test they had or the problem with a friend. And then really listen. Being heard and knowing somemee supports t tm can be a lifesaver for young people who are struggling. Its really a safe place. Ive felt safe.
