Gary barta of discrimination. Former Senior Associate Athletic director jane meyer says she was moved to a less important position a week after telling barta about an alleged pattern of wage, sexual orientation, and gender discrimination. The school says it moved meyer because at the time, her partner, Tracey Griesbaum intended to sue the school for discrimination after being fired from her role as the head coach of the field hockey team. The ui says griesbaum was fired over allegations of bullying players. The school says it did the dust has now cleared in University Heights heightsafter elections in the small Johnson County town required a recount. The town of just over 1thousand people will now be led by a mayor who wasnt even on the ballot. Write in candidate Wally Heitman defeated incumbant louise from by just 10 votes. University heights had the largest voter turnout by far than 56 percent of registered voters casting ballots. A corridor hot spot is hoping to attract more customers by sprucing up its store fronts. Mellaney . The drafted guidelines are a how to for Downtown Business owners on their store fronts. There is a open house here tonight to discuss them. Owner joni schrup wanted even more visibility after that. 35 20 thats when we decided to get the blade sign. Schrup says she loves the eyecatching sign, but it took some careful looking through city code. 2 10 its confusing, i think laughs i think any city code is a little bit complicated. Leaders hope new guidelines from the city and Downtown District will bring it all in focus. Nancy bird, iowa city Downtown District executive director2 21 16 it will provide a lot of guidance and education and best Management Practices for store fronts so it will encourage businesses to think a little bit differentlythe guidelines will impact new businesses and owners who want to give their store a face lift. The Downtown District says they want to encourage a vibrant street scene appropriate for pedestrian traffic. 2 47 i think the other element that Design Guidelines can bring downtown is to provide some predictability to the kind of effort or process that theyll have to go through with the city around permitting. The city and Downtown District started working on this with a retail architect from st. Louis this summer. 5 53 were really taking a step back and looking at ways that we can work Better Together to express an intent and encouragement of creativity, how you really think about your really think about your signage and store front and then back that out and see what code changes may need to apply. A new report out today from the march of dimes says iowa has more work to be done to reduce premature births. The state received a c on the report card, but one board member cbs 2 news spoke with today says, theres a lot of progress being made, and shes very pleased with one new addition to this years report. Report. Cbs 2 News Reporter joy howe is here to explain. Premature birth is the number one killer of babies. Every year the march of dimes releases a report to try and bring those numbers down. One woman who knows firsthand about this says, there are Great Strides being made and even more to come. Come. We really need to find the problems of premature births so that all babies are born healthy 22. 39. 02. 18 Christy Scimeca is a woman with a mission you might say shes been on her whole life. 22. 32. 22. 20 i was born normally at 35 weeks, just a month early. Fast forward 5 years and then my brother was born and he was born at 26 weeks while christys birth didnt have lasting effects, her brother stevehe spent 125 days in the nicu fought hard. He had a shunt put in his brain, because he had brain bleedinga. He was one pound, 13 oz. 22. 33. 11. 25 but he survived, and to christy, is the Perfect Little brother. People look at me and they go oh how do you do that, how do you live with that . The different medical things, the needs that he needs. to me, its all normal. 22. 37. 14. 16 when christy decided to compete in the miss america system, her platform was easy the march of dimes was a chapter to a story she lives out every day. The march of dimes works to research why babies are born prematurely. In iowa alone, more than 3 Million Dollars is put into Research Grants to look at how cholesterol and even a womans height can trigger premature birth. Now, as a march of dimes board member, christy actively works to educate she says thursdays report card that lists iowa with a c grade shows work still needs to be done, but shes encouraged that the report is digging deeper. For the first time, the state numbers are broken down into counties. And we can work specifically on these different counties. While the research is exciting and the strength of numbers is improving, christy reminds us remember that nothing beats the strength of the human spirit. 22. 37. 22. 05 when he was born, we were told hed never walk, talk or be normal. So just because the prognosis that they tell you when youre borna it doesnt matter. You can break through it and you can live. 22. 37. 45 a spokesperson for the march of dimes says, they believe part of iowas c grade is because much of the state is rural and women may not have as much access to healthcare, and knowing how each countys doing, will help them educate physicians there. His visit is part of the leadership iowa program. Folks from all over the state and from all walks of life are spending today and tomorrow in Washington County focusing on iowas agriculture economy. As we speak, one of iowas largest events for up andcoming businesses is just getting underway. Launch day in cedar rapids has businesses from throughout the u. S. Delivering short pitches. Some of the local businesses there are goquets, the Online Flower delivery company, swineguard, which is targeting hog farmers, and caredrop, a Health Technology startup. The event is the culmination of 3 months of teams refining their Business Models with help from the events organizer, cedar rapids iowa startup accelerator. The event at the hilton doubletree in downtown cedar rapids is expected to draw close to 1,000 attendees. Those who park in downtown cedar rapids are going to be paying more for the privilege. Privilege. Regular users of city parking in cedar rapids may soon be paying more to keep their cars downtown. Thats because monthly parking rates, and fees for violations, will increase january 1st. Park cedar rapids, which manages city parking, said the increases will affect parking fourth ramp and lot 44 off 8th avenue. Theyll also be hiking up the fees for violations at metered spots. Park cedar rapids said all net revenues will pay for costs like Facility Maintenance and planned improvements at the five seasons parking ramp. The old science station building in cedar rapids will soon become a commercial and office space. Thats thanks in part to tax assistance to be provided to the projects developer, which the Cedar Rapids City Council okd on tuesday. The conversion two properties on the 400 block of first street se is estimated to cost 2. 5 million. Once completed, the properties should annually generate about 160,000 in City Property tax revenue. But about 40 percent of that revenue will go back to the developer, station on first llc. Property records list the buildings owner as bruce lehrman, who is also ceo of involta, the cedar rapids based data center company. The council didnt discuss the deal at the meeting tuesday. Tuesday.
