KGAN CBS Evening News With Scott Pelley September 21, 2016

There we go if it continues moving east like it is right now you can see carville, national and plainfield would be the path of the storm. It appears to be tracking a little bit to the south of charles city, we should be moving east in those communities and eventually maybe nora new hampton will be under the gun as the storm moves on to the east from there. Lets take a look also if we could i would like to get in just a little bit closer on that it does look a little more nazi and you can see it has tightened up a little bit since we last saw it, wouldnt you say . We are starting to see a little bit more circulation and some stronger winds with those brighter green showing up. If there was a tornado being produced it is likely to the east of daughtry and south of southwest of marble rock. If green you just want to be in your safe place. Stay inside away from the windows. Regardless if there is a tornado being produced there could be wind damage or hail that could knock out some windows. You definitely want to stay inside. Lets flip it back over little about this outing give you an idea of what in the world is causing all of this. It is a very strong warm front that is currently stretched out across northeastern that runs from about mason city and charles city then back to near cedar rapids. Weve not quite got into the real toasty air here today. But it was not far away, almost 90 comments close to us as tama this afternoon, ottumwa was over 90 degrees and from their west and south all across western and southern iowa temperature in the 90s in northeastern iowa is barely been in the low 70s. That is the temperature contrast that is fueling these thunderstorms. Eventually i suspect we will weather and everything will form into a big cluster and thats what we have the potential for some very heavy rains to develop across parts of northeastern iowa. That is the area that has seen 48 inches of rain already this year. The ground is really saturated up there. This is the type of storm that could certainly cause some flash flooding. Believe there is already a Flash Flood Warning already issued for the storm right here. Is that right question at yes there was one just to the west, there are a lot of warnings out right now. There you go. That is up around mason city in cerro gordo county. Thats until 10 45 p. M. Tonight. So the thunderstorms of art he dumped 1 inch 2 inches of rain in a short period of time. This year has that capability as it works its way on across the southern portion of floyd county. It looks like the core of it is staying north of Butler County right now. There you can see marble rock in the circulation is still hanging pretty close to marble fast these moving . A lookalike about 15 miles an hour. Thats pretty slow. Thereve been times where we have seen them going 40 50 miles an hour per thats another issue of flash flooding many times for a moment as 50 miles an hour and youre getting rainfall rates of 4 inches or 5 inches and are thats really going to crank up those totals as far as the rain is concerned. I do not see anything new in terms of any reports from the National Weather service from the chat, do you . Know the only thing across as saying there is definite tornado potential otherwise weve not gotten any reports of any damage for any sort of boards of hail, wind, or tornado. Lets go back into velocity motives if we have any updates on that. It still hasnt shown any dramatic changes, but thats would expect to see a tornado back into the updraft there. So not too far away from marble rock is where we have our circulation. If you are in marble rock writer were east of that this is heading your direction very slowly. Lets check it out one more time as far as who is in the path of that cell if we could please. It looks like on the warning we are actually tracking a little bit southeast of the east, but not by much so youre probably going to be close to new hampton, nashville nashua and in the next 50 minutes and eventually by the time we get to 6 00 p. M. It should be pretty much out of floyd and butler counties and heading off to the east so than getting into parts of Bremer County and maybe even northern Black Hawk County as the storm moves off to the east southeast. There is your loop. One thing about the core, looks like its gotten a little raggedy its not quite as defined as it was. You can see the purple area in the middle it has a really nice little core, nice circular core but now it is getting a little ragged so maybe it is weakening a little bit. Is still a formidable storm, that is for sure. Theres what we are looking at their down a little bit from where we wer about 2inch diameter hail. There are the rainfall rates we talked about a little bit earlier. You can see that they are pretty significant. And with the storms moving as slow as they are 15 25 miles an hour youre looking at rainfall rates at around 3. 75 inches in our time for it would not be surprising to see some places there south of charles city between there and green could certainly cause flash flooding. And the other storm up around mason city also dumping rainfall amounts that are pretty significant two. Now that looks a little bit brighter there were starting to see some brighter brain and reds in there. This particular scam is showing it hanging in there. No confirmed tornadoes reported just yet but those were the storm is most intense right around marble rock. We have not gotten any reports it is still going to keep this Tornado Warning in effect this is northern Butler County including the city of county including marble rock and towers fell and that goes until 6 00 p. M. We could also be the Weather Service is now saying a trained weather spotter spotter freak tornado touched down 3 miles west of marble rock. On our hail product, just east of green lets do a query on that. We are still up there probably around 1. 5 inches as far as what we are indicating for size. Earlier it was much larger run 2. 5 inches so it has come down substantially, overall it appears a weakening trend in as we talked about. That is something we are just going to have to watch. It is still up there 57,000 feet and the atmosphere, that is a very large thunderstorm particularly for this time of year. False starts work tomorrow . Fall starts tomorrow. So it is a pretty strong storm so we have some unusual weather that has been going on in this late season with the warmth, humanity, a lot of instability. Because of all that warmth and humidity and tropical air that is w we have been talking about the Tornado Warning itself in some of the other Severe Weather parameters. And a general sense the biggest concern tonight, this will go on through the nighttime hours is the potential for heavy heavy rain across the northern lets say two tiers of our counties, they be three counties before we go through the rest of the night. Its an area that has seen so watch the available water in the atmosphere right up there around 2 inches. That is just extremely high. And every time this year that we have gotten levels close to that some places seeing 4 inches 5 inches in some places more than that. So that is what we are talking about with this tropical moisture with amazing amounts of water vapor and if you get thunderstorms they are going to produce rain and a lot of it. That is a big issue as far as northern iowas conservative on tonight. We did get a report in marble rock ds that was about eight minutes ago. You can see the couplet slowly you will be able to see how in the last few frames it has fall apart. The circulation is definitely gone down substantially. And unless it ramps up again the threat has certainly gone away as far as the tornado is concerned. And probably some spots with some decent sized hail. As far as the actual rain goes there you can see on a regular reader of the reflectivity there is a few places where its dark. You get those rainfall rates 2, 3, 4 inches in that time. Could see 3 inches of rain in an hour, hour and a half. You see the rates. 3. 45 according to the radar itself. And i still dont think there is much evidence that the storms have sped up. 20 miles per hour. Doesnt seem to be to be slowly moving this last half an hour or so. And we have one of the warnings expires at 6 00. Is that the Butler County . That was floyd. So floyd county. Unless they are going to reextend it, which i seriously doubt, that should be done. The rest of it will be confined to the northern parts of county. Thats out until 6 15. Yes. And maybe there is a chance they will even cancel a little bit earlier if we continue to see the trends we are seeing on our radar here. As it stands now, clarksville, nashau and plainfiled the storms are coming your way between now and 6 17 this evening. And there is going to be some very heavy rain and high winds, but the tornado threat seems to have eased up a little bit. We will go back in on the velocity now and show out
