Police were called to an apartment just before three this morning on reports of shots fired. Officers tell cbs 2 news shell casings were found near the scene and a car was hit. Why a man shot and killed two Police Officers in the Early Morning hours yesterday. Yesterday. Des Moines Sargeant Tony beminio and urbandale officer Justin Martin were both ambushed. Officer martin killed first police say at least 15 rounds were fired at him while driving. Minutes later and less than two miles away beminio was shot at a stop sign. The suspect scot greene arrested hours later. He was walking down a gravel road in Dallas County which is just west of urbandale. Greene flagged down a dnr employee showed his id and told him to call 911. As questions remain on just why the shooting happened cbs 2 learns more about the suspect scott greene. Greene. Back in 2014 he was charged when he refused to be searched for weapons. Days after that he was accused of threatening to kill a man at his apartment complex and pleaded guilty to harassment. Harassment. Right now officers are trying to figure out if the man in this image from youtube is the suspect. The posting claims the man in the video got into an altercation with some African American fans at a High School Football game because he carried a confederate flag. Police later removed him from School Grounds after several co. Complaints. Still developing authorities are looking at the video and whether it may have sparked wednesdays violence. Hes had multiple recent runins with the law, and des Moines Police say he was known to be armed. He surrendered without incident around 9 am, eight hours after the officers were shot and killed. Just months ago they lost two other officers in a headon collision on transporting a prisoner when a drunk driver hit them while going the wrong way down the highway. All four people involved in the crash died. Then in august a West Des Moines officer died on duty while driving his motorcycle back to the department after testifying in a hitandrun case. According to the officer down memorial page 114 officers have lost their lives in the line of duty this year alone. Beminio had been with des Moines Police since 2005 after working for Indianola Police department martins team says they had high hopes for his future within Urbandale Police. Sgt. Scott dwyer, Indianola Police department 19 42 40 tony was goal oriented and i think thats why he took a step to go to des moines. He was a good family man. Chief ross mccarty, Urbandale Police department enough to hire a very good young man we hired him august 2015 he started his academy shortly after graduating last december from the academy. . Sargeant beminio was a state wrestling champion at iowa city west in 1996 the next year he helped west win a state championship in football as a captain. While both officers led different lives they also shared several similarities. Graduated from Simpson College in des moines. A lot of people on campus are now in mourning. Professors who knew the men say they were dedicated to their work and thier passion for criminal justice studies showed through their school work. The fact that both of them were our graduates because weve had this program for a lot of years and weve had all kinmds of graduates, the fact graduates has really hit hard. Hard. Staff who knew the men faculty and students say theyre angry but all they can do now is wait for the results of the investigation. This year there have been multiple other instances where Police Officers have been killed in ambush style attacks. Attacks.
