Good at this all right so listen I this is I think an important topic for us to consider. We want to know what's going on with not just with Donald Trump but how he got elected the people who continue to support him he maintains you know 38 right now he's got a 37 percent approval rating and that's according to most of the credible polls about a 37 percent approval rating and about a 56 percent disapproval rating Why are those 37 percent 36 percent whatever they are why are they still supporting this guy and you think with all the scandals that arise that they're going to say oh no this is not my guy anymore I mean I even look at Evan Jellicoe Christians and I wonder what in the world are they thinking this is a pretense to think that Robert that Donald Trump is any sort of Evan Jellicoe Christian himself he's not and he actually exemplifies some of the most disgusting behavior that would anybody else you know they'd call down fire and brimstone on their heads if they exhibited this kind of behavior but for some reason Evan Jellicoe Christians in some parts of the country in particular are still supporters of Donald Trump So what is going on what is going on well we hear from some people that if we really want to deal with Donald Trump or beat Donald Trump though what we have to learn is to think like his supporters there's a piece that appeared in The Washington Post just recently and this guy is a person who. Excuse me who's from Venezuela and he said that he thinks that he understands what's going on with the people who support Donald Trump he said You gotta get down you got to understand who these people are and why they're supporting Donald Trump and once you understand and you have to you have to not lecture them you have to listen to them you have to listen to why it is they support him what he has said that causes them to support him and how what he has said relates to what they considered to be the biggest challenges in their lives and once you understand that then you may be able to talk reasonably with people and bring up better solutions real solutions solutions that can work for the country but be serious about it I mean solutions that you're really going to hammer hard on I mean this is one of the reasons I think all of us agree that Bernie Sanders had the popular appeal that he had because he was thinking outside the box because he was he was bold he was like he was like f.d.r. Even care he didn't care that that there were people who would say oh that's communism where you know it's not really communism but yet socialism it's not communism because I'm not looking at putting the means of production in the hands of the government but it is socialism because there are some things that communities need to do for one another even for the people who are super Por the super poor need to be taken care of by the people who can take care of them and so you know Bernie was able to do that was Donald Trump of the same ilk in some regards he was he did it in a more blusterous way he did it in a way that I think was utterly unrealistic and he did it in a way where he made enemies of people who are really not enemies you know our fellow Americans are not our enemies so anyway this guy writing he said if we get down with the people who are trump supporters and understand what their big issues are that we may actually be able to develop the solutions and commit to those solutions that are going to get them to stop supporting Donald Trump and all the things all the baggage that comes along with him you have to think like his supporters. I think that I get that I guess I understand that their people are hurting and I do understand this I understand like that people believe that they were left behind that they were not being taken care of that they were not being listened to that their very real concerns were not being addressed by the people in power whether I have to learn to think like his supporters I'm not really sure I've buy it so we're going to consider 2 things one I want you to think about this do you think that Trump supporters really are people who feel that they were left behind by politics do you think that the major concerns they have have to do with retirement jobs medical care you know Bill Clinton is the one who famously said it's the economy stupid I don't know if he actually said stupid but he did say it's the economy if that's what's driving Trump supporters the way to woo them is to engage listen come up with those real ideas and then take bold aggressive action to solve their problems not give it lip service right like for example if it's the infrastructure stinks people are sick and tired of potholes and bridges collapsing and that sort of thing and jobs are scarce and low paying then we need to propose a real new New Deal to put people to work and make a large part of that work the repair and improvement of the nation's infrastructure funded by Uncle Sam Yes indeed deficit spending you bet your butt but that deficit spending would be an investment in America not putting more money in the pockets of the rich you make it bold you make it real and you stick by it and you push it if it's health care proposal real single payer health care deal and explain to them what that actually means do is to me everybody knows talk about the big corporations running health insurance and big pharma with their outrageous prices and their outrageous profits talk about eliminating the middleman letting people deal directly with their doctors a gay. Again that has to resonate if it's retirement make bold pronouncement demand laws that protect retirement funds from being borrowed against from irresponsibly risky investment of retirement funds and absolutely for big politicians from changing Social Security and Medicare think that would do it listening 1st engaging relating to the frustrations proposing the kind of actions that would really help them and quickly would that work maybe. See the problem I have with that idea is that I think a great many trump supporters do live in that basket of deplorable Hillary Clinton mentioned I think a lot of them are massage and racists and I think that's one of the major reasons they continue to support Donald Trump no matter what. Recently Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote about that we're going to talk about that we're also going to talk about Dave Chappelle and what he sees in Trump's supporters and that'll happen when we come back I'm Pat Thurston You're listening to. Be. a chip in the key today by the way and this kind of relates to our last hours discussion and I did not know this Jack in the box has teamed up with Snoop Dogg Yep snoop and Jack In The Box have decided to introduce a combo meal for the stoner community they're calling it the merry munchie meal it begins on January 1st at 3 franchise locations in California it offers chicken strips 2 tacos 5 churros French fries onion rings and a small drink and that of course is to help people with their with their munchies and to a living alleviate they say that famous pot smoker indecision so you get it all and you get it for a mere 420 see what they did there you know for 20 you know that's the cost of it so yeah everybody is getting into it all right speaking of getting into it let's get into Trump's supporters why there Trump supporters what we can do in order to reach Trump supporters and maybe convince them that he's not the guy for them how could you possibly have swallowed this we can't reach them apparently by doing what I just did because it's insulting nobody listens to that when you attack somebody for what they believe or for what they think or for a decision they've made if you attack them and say how could you possibly then you're just going to make them become defensive so instead you listen to them you somehow relate to them at least that's what we're hearing and Dave Chapelle has a similar message. I know only the rich white people call poor white people trash and the only reason I know that is because I made so much money. The rich whites told me they say that a cocktail. Yeah he said and I stood with them in line like all of us Americans are required to do in a Democracy nobody skips the line to vote and I listen to them and then he's talking about of the people who are supporting Trump he said I listen to them say naive poor white people things man Donald Trump is going to go to Washington and he's going to fight for us I'm standing there thinking in my mind your poor he's fighting for me but Chappelle says you know he believes that white low income voters went for Donald Trump but that these are people who voted for Donald Trump because they're desperate because they're poor he said. He said White poor whites are his least favorite group because of the trouble they've recently caused and that's because they voted for the president but he said I looked him right in their cold smeared faces and to my surprise you know what I didn't see I didn't see one deplorable face in that group I saw some angry faces and some determined faces but they felt like decent folk he says he said that he suspected Trump would win based on his conversations with neighbors fans and others outside the liberal coastal metropolises that backed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton so he saw real people decent people not a deplorable face in that group Ok I you know I know that that's true of some of them. But I also am of a mind to believe that some of them are deplorable because I saw them marching in Charlottesville because I've seen them not condemned this president when this president who refused to condemn these racist demonstrations these all white demonstrations these people who are holding Nazi flags these despicable individuals who were chanting anti Jewish chance in Charlottesville and in other places as well and you know there are good people on both sides no there aren't Not when one side is that side Nazis are bad it's the easiest thing in the world to say to believe to understand is a truth Nazis are bad so it brings me to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar He's 70 years old right now he remains the highest point score in the history of the n.b.a. He won 6 championships he was picked for a record 1000 All-Star games they compare him to Michael Jordan when they talk about the best basketball players of all time this kid this guy when he's 70 now but when he was 17 when he was a kid he conducted his 1st ever interview with Martin Luther King in Harlem then in 2015 he received a handwritten insult from Donald Trump see Kareem has become an activist and he did it because he attended the Cleveland summit he was the youngest man invited to the Cleveland summit that was in 1967 when leading black athletes gathered to meet Muhammad Ali they were there to decide whether they were going to support after all he had been stripped of his world title and banned from boxing because he rejected the draft during the Vietnam War and he was still luau cinder when he attended the Cleveland summit. He hadn't converted to Islam yet. He did that later but he listened he listened to what he said and it left an impression on him and he realized that he had a voice and that he needed to use his voice he said black Americans wanted to protect because he spoke for us when we had no voice when he said no Viet Cong ever called me the n. Word we figured that one out real quick Ali was a winner and people supported him because of his class as a human being but some of the things we fought against then are still happening each generation faces the same old problems he writes about racism he has a new book out he writes about how he has been a target because of his race pacifically because of his race so then he wrote an opinion piece. It was in 2015 he wrote an opinion piece in The Washington Post condemning Donald Trump's attempts to bully the press. Karim said Now I know why the press always treats you oh no I'm sorry then Trump sent him a note and the notrump sent said Kareem Now I know why the press always treated you so badly they couldn't stand you the fact is you don't have a clue about life and what has to be done to make America great again. Karim said if you judge yourself by your enemies I'm doing great going to change he knows he's where he is this is the important part because of his appeal to racism and xenophobia the people who want to divide the country are in his camp.
