Because they don't have the same infrastructure requirements like docking in marinas they also use less gas the boats are faster and have less severe environmental impact and because they hover above the water of a craft have a clear advantage over traditional ferries they can travel over shallow water which there is a lot of here in the Bay Area the vessels could potentially take commuters all the way from Silicon Valley to the north bay and anywhere in between Terry Ross reports a company called hover hopes to initially build to hover craft and the infrastructure needed by the year 2021 Kaiser Permanente speaking of building is planning to build and huge new headquarters in Oakland it will be one of the biggest buildings in the Bay Area larger in space but not as tall as the sales force tower in San Francisco Kaiser says it will consolidate thousands of employees from different offices into the new building on Telegraph Avenue Construction is expected to start next year in the building is set to open in the year 2023 there's been a large quake off the coast of Japan the preliminary magnitude has been downgraded though to a 6.4 but still powerful enough to trigger a tsunami warning for Japan the quake was centered on the coast on the northwestern coast of Japan there are no reports of damage yet usually Democrats and Republicans don't agree on much however Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff of the trumpet ministration both agree when it comes to Iranian involvement in the Persian Gulf and the attack on shipping I don't think there's any question that Iran was behind the attack on the tankers there aren't many good candidates on the intelligence is pretty clear His comments come as the Iranian government reacts to additional troops from the u.s. Leaders there say they don't want a confrontation with the u.s. But are also not standing down with their war of words as we hear from correspondent Fred replied another Revolutionary Guard commander came out and said that they were closely monitoring u.s. A addiction crisis that's being disguised as a housing crisis and if you look at the numbers from the city of Seattle on King County prosecutors and law enforcement some of their estimates are that up to 50 percent of the homeless are addicted to opioids that's heroin fentanyl and other synthetics and 80 percent of the people that are actually unsheltered people living in cars tents in R.V.'s suffer from substance abuse disorders and if you look at the numbers only 6 percent of people on the streets say that it's because of rising Rance while at the same time 80 percent of people on the streets are suffering from addictions and that's the clear cause nobody wants to say it but I think until we really address that we are going to be able to solve this problem and it's a Chris Rufo and we'll have a little more from him in a couple minutes dealing with the West Coast bomb explosion. There you go then our sound effects now for the West Coast bomb explosion up day. Bomb explosion I almost want to have the bomb before the explosion I don't know if we're all that dry here that way. It sounds like were blown up. Or blowing up I don't know I would have done better though no it's not Ok that's not we're not doing that is not the solution. It's the same as to who shouldn't but not supposed to lose nobody's going to take it is a policy prescription just an. But you know the feature the West Coast bomb explosion. Yeah that's the one that's the one before you get into this I want to bring this up obviously I'm having trouble getting into it yes our own Mike Kansan executive producer spent 3 days walking around New York walked everywhere on New York how many homeless people did you see in 3 days in New York City 66 in the entire weekend I see 66 picking up my kid from his day camp today in my small town. And way more than that oh sure I will see 626 walking to my car in the parking lot honest to God That's not an exaggeration right last time I was New York I saw. As I walked around New York and nobody got in my face asking for stuff well and one might point out that the various beggars that people in West Coast city city are almost certainly begging for drug money Chris Rufo points out in his excellent article in City Journal which we will furnish a link for that according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy the average heavy opioid user consumes little over 8500 dollars in drugs per month even if you're a moderate user then you're spending somewhere around a grand I would guess and that's what they're begging for on the street corner he's soft heads and give money that's Ok if you're David Crosby and making millions of dollars off your hit tunes you know as a drug addict but if you're a if you've got no means of income that's a lot yeah that's a lot of money to spend on drugs so to get back to the the opening clip which I think is extremely interesting. 6 percent of people listed. Rising rents are housing prices is the reason they were homeless 6 percent how does that square my friends with the. Way the problem's been represented to you by the media by activist groups or maybe the city council in your town right yeah yeah well pointed out the homeless industrial complex which are as are filtering enormous amounts of money through them in an effort to. And I'm putting quotes around this while sneering while are trying to solve the problem you know it was funny listening to that clip I was reminded of one of my great overarching political philosophies and certainly I owe a great deal to Thomas Sowell for this thought but I think the great contest of our time politically speaking is realism versus emotionalism people who understand reality is difficult sometimes you have to do things you don't want to do it's unpleasant it's hard doesn't make you happy but you've got to do it you've got to do the work somebody has a wet blanket on national splurged a voice and then the people who think that if a policy makes them feel good to say to their friends that makes it a good policy and if it sounds good if it makes you feel generous in your heart if you're following your heart never mind you want to know how we're going to pay for this how can you ask that when there are people suffering the great contest of our time is between realism and. I don't know what was the term I use does they're going to go is a pretty good one just to name yeah you should you should present that I should maybe should be the opening question for George Will next hour because he's super and a bad idea so it's funny looking at our e-mail a lot of people are looking for that chat a lot of big fans hate George well because he hates about it he's but that's fine you know what here's here's a hint for you about life it's not going to hurt you to listen to him if you if you have your mind changed well then you have learned something you've improved yourself and if you continue to disagree with them you have further honed your ability to disagree with them effectively well and I don't know you and Joe Ok I don't know but I had no intention of having Trump enter the conversation and all I'm telling you it's it's difficult not to Anyway moving along so it's real Islam versus emotionalism to me and the emotional argument is a powerful one in a lot of these things including homelessness because these people are freakin pathetic but if you're going to move toward a solution it's got to be absolutely drenched unrealism or you are wasting taxpayer money which is immoral can we here clip number 2 please you may find this interesting that the real thing is I think the kind of ideological factions that are in kind of the dominant position in California Portland Oregon Seattle Washington they don't want to say there's an addiction crisis because it conflicts with their social justice ideology that the homeless are kind of virtuous victims of an oppressive society and it all they also want to avoid what they call stigmatizing addiction so rather than confront the problem with clear eyes and really digging into it they've chosen to ignore it if you go on Mayor Eric Garcetti website in l.a. He has a kind of an outline of the 6 causes of homelessness not one of them is drug addiction so they've they've adopted a policy of denial and deflection and the results you can see on the streets it's absolutely not working and it's a catastrophe Wow It's one thing to not emphasize the drug addiction which clearly is what should be at the top of the list but to not even have it among 6 causes of all right Miss Right is. How great an illustration of that of emotionalism is that they're afraid well we don't want to stigmatize this or we don't want to make people less sympathetic toward that or is just it's all about manipulating emotion and what it does make you less sympathetic and if I see if you see people out there in the street and I think are awful system has forced them into this you have to have a different view of them then if you chose to get hooked on drugs and it sucks to be hooked on drugs but does your life dude get out of my way I'm going to my car right but I just I think that's such a beautiful illustration Chris Rufo doesn't have a hateful bone in his body he's West Coast guy he happens to live in Fremont California and and he's talking about solutions helping people but from a realistic point of view not an emotionalist I don't have you know I don't know what that would be how I'd like to hear what he would say to me you are right and not know when you ever hear anybody say wasting taxpayer money is immoral it is immoral you know it's president spending I'd rather you did nothing then spend taxpayer money on something that does no good Nothing is better than that right right nothing is a win for society compared to wasting it on something that doesn't approach to the problem so city of Seattle cops in the city attorney are estimating that of the unsheltered about 80 percent of them are substance abusers 80 percent here's what Gil Garcetti in Los Angeles said causes homeless homelessness housing shortage stagnant wages cuts to mental health services domestic and sexual abuse shortcomings in criminal justice and a lack of resources for veterans So nothing about drug abuse so I guess his argument would be any or multiple of those things drove people to drugs. And that's why and now that you might offer that argument I you know I've known plenty of people who drank excessively done drugs whatever no no no Gil and that's I mean I appreciate your concern but you can't approach it from that perspective we're going to solve all of people's problems then they will not be drug addicts anymore that's not the way addiction treatment works I mean you might work on stuff while you're working on the addiction. This you know I don't I think one of the real keys to this and this gets back to the realism versus emotionalism argument. Is because of sympathetic urges emotional urges and I'm not for some sort of emotionless you know dystopia Trust me I just believe in balance and realism. It's absolutely undeniable that when you remove the disincentives to negative behavior you will get more of that behavior without a doubt I have 3 kids maybe some of y'all have a couple 2 tree 4 kids whatever I want you to picture this you've got your son your daughter whatever they're of a bit of a slacker character you know they're not terribly ambitious whatever maybe their are uncertain about what to do with their lives you let them live with you at home at age 2728 and maybe you do not only deal let them live there yeah let them live there rent free you have you know that's is that a positive or is that the removal of a negative cost. Is a cost a negative if they're similar so you remove the cost of living there you're letting them live there rent free not only that you still give them $150.00 a month allowance. And because that's not a lot you're buying their pot for him. Wow are you going to get more kids living at home and staying there or less of it come on now through this misplaced idea of sympathy and compassion Seattle has been the great leader in the San Francisco to. An end increasingly l.a. But Seattle's town day what a wonderful wonderful city which has gone completely off the rails. They are letting their kids live at home rent free given them allowance and buy in on their pot in that any negative repercussions for being a drug user for being a bum a vagrant living in a park begging tourists passing out on a sidewalk all these things that society has always said you can't do this and if you do we're going to throw you in the drunk tank or run you out of town we've removed all of those disincentives and now we have way way way way more of it and people are scratching their heads what do we do what do we do man I say gold school I don't want cops bust in anybody's heads always preserve people civil rights always but caught this this ridiculous soft headed soft hearted judge just judges are behind a lot of the side of it well you can't prevent people from camping in front of a business it's their right to use the sidewalk to I mean that is just emotion without logic we've got to move back to realism and you know it's really interesting is you have these super bastions of emotionalism over realism on the West Coast a lot of them have gotten so fed up real Islam is making a comeback so maybe there's hope well that's our West Coast bomb explosion update. Sure we'll move back we might be back later today let alone tomorrow Yeah no the latest round our next line is 415295 k.f.t.
