Being held to accountability for those ridiculous power outages and when I see ridiculous I don't mean that when there is an honest possibility of fire of high winds of danger that that shouldn't be cared for that that shouldn't be anticipated and dealt with you don't turn off people's power for 36 hours when one of those hours toward the latter part of that 36 hours is windy and in the dead of calm you're sitting in your house with no heat no electricity no power and you're using candles and you're using lanterns and you're cooking on open flame to compensate for the power outage it just doesn't make any sense I was on the air for one night of the power outages and I had more and more people calling me to tell me during the John Rotman show that there was not a whiff of wind anywhere in the Bay Area or where they were and were getting those calls from all over the bay area where the lights were out well now California's public utility regulator has sanctioned p.g. Over the power shop's Terry Ross cover this for k g o top utility regulator Mary Bill Badger blasted Pacific Gas and Electric yesterday for what she called failures in execution in the largest planned power outage in state history aimed at avoiding wildfires the agency ordered a series of corrective actions including a goal of restoring power within 12 hours not the utilities current 48 hour goal the P.C.'s of the utility must work hard to avoid such large scale outages develop better ways to communicate and ensure p.g.d. Staff are sufficiently trained p.g.d. Has admitted they were not properly prepared when they shut off power to more than 700000 customers Governor Gavin Newsom also criticized p.g. And e. For its performance during the outage and urged the utility to compensate affected customers with a bill credit or rebate. A bill credit or rebate at least would do something to take the sting out of well for example all that ruined food at and again I want to stress we live in a high fire danger area it is part of our reality especially over the last several years that we have vicious and dangerous fires that we need to prevent as much as we can but there are smart ways to do it and they're stupid ways to do it there are ways the take the customer in the consumer into consideration and there are ways that are not I like to think that p.g. Walpole this again you know I had a caller on the john Rotman show who said well you know they don't just decide to turn on and turn off the whole blocks at the same time they has to be a little more meticulous than that they have to do it far in advance just in case and you know what in that vast spectrum between hitting one switch for whole neighborhoods and whole cities at a time and going house to house and turning off and on a switch in that whole spectrum I'm sure it's somewhere in the middle and I'm sure you don't have to have people sitting in 24 hours of darkness with not a bit of wind not the slightest breeze happening at all meterological models are not perfect but there are a lot better than that your thoughts on this. 808810 is the number to call your thoughts on whether p.g. Any needs to be sanctioned further if these sanctions are appropriate if the idea of compensating people whose power was out for so long while p.g. And e. Admits they were unprepared to deal with this well is that compensation appropriate 808-0810 phone lines are already up we're talking to Dan who is in Sonoma Hey Dan was your power out. My power was out for about 3 days and this is after being evacuated 2 years ago this is an absolute disgrace on PJ's part think about this they've had 2 years to figure this out What have they done when they say that it's equipment failure by p.g. And e. Exactly what does that mean is it their power lines the transformers and if if they haven't identified the problem what are they going to replace the equipment with I refuse to believe that shutting off the power is the right answer because I'm not going to go through this year after year after year yeah I think about this too that the dry windy conditions are not engage in a stupidities area the entire country goes through this the power lines are no different than any state in the country what is p.g. Need not addressing and how come we haven't found a solution yet what that let me bring to McAllister on this case came in if I'm not mistaken piscine was was saying in its defense that it did find areas where the equipment was 100 percent it said in recent days it has discovered more than a 100 spots where the windy weather damaged their equipment and that could be by bringing down power lines or bringing down trees near power lines etc They didn't detail each its effect and since But they say there were 100 examples right and of items were that were damaged and one of my thoughts there and I have a feeling Dan that you would agree with this is who's going to check their facts on that are we just going to take their word on what example look was damaged where Show me the photos there you go damn that it well that's it doesn't actually point now so cal Edison as I understand it is replacing their under inflated wires with a insulated wire is called Covered I forget the phrase for it but anyway it's insane to have an insulated wire sitting on top of power poles which is the problem if you think about any wire in your house everything is insulated you don't have live wires uninsulated that should have been dealt with a long time. That's a little more expensive but replacing those wires is far more cost effective than going underground which is what some people have suggested right and which is exorbitantly expensive not necessarily to be discarded because of that but it is it's very very expensive Dan thank you for an excellent phone call I appreciate that and that opens up a line at 808-0810 Can we talk about how expensive that is it's in the billions of dollars to have power lines buried underground but how many billions of dollars have been paid out to people who had their homes destroyed in San Bruno or by fires and how much money have we spent on bonuses billions on bonuses so really is the money is it so expensive are we just spending it on other things that well I know an awful lot of it is is in compensation and having interviewed me years back and said Why is there this much compensation and you're saying there's not enough money to do the repairs and I was told Well those are 2 separate things no you know let the month money is fungible cash is fungible you know of course you could use that money to do repairs instead of paying somebody $27000000.00 a year that is a choice that they're making and that's going to lead to a much longer conversation about profit in the public service as cetera but instead let's go to the phones we got Andrew in Saturday Andrew thanks for waiting on the Paterson show. I don't have power you can find Thanks. I Pad The reason I was calling is I know that there's a lot of people out there complaining not complaining but just stating a you know hey my neighborhood we have the power turned off I know mine was but it wasn't windy but one of the things about the transmission lines and why that power was turned off is that you know here in Sao say the transmission lines run through the Bay Area to areas where it's super windy and very high risk to those neighborhoods so in order to actually produce protect those neighborhoods the transmission lines along the entire would have to be turned off so here in San Jose wasn't when the at all but the areas where our clients set out to hunt you know hide what areas a huge risk to those communities had to be turned off so I just wanted to add some clarification to everybody and I think that that's and I want to clarify by the way too as well I mean and she's sitting in for Pat and I should have said that earlier but you know there is that however even the piece you see is saying that this was badly handled and that the utility has to work harder to avoid these outages some of these outages at least some percentage of them were unnecessary and I do follow your thought on where the power lines are they originate here they go all the way out there but where is the power outages were. Centered that night. There are with and these were the high wind regions this was the North Bay This is where the winds would have been howling they were not in fact one guy told me it was one of the quietest nights he's seen there the whole time he was living there that doesn't mean it's not windy somewhere but these are the areas where the winds were supposed to be high and where the danger was the greatest and there wasn't even a breeze and the p.u.c. Is telling me you've got to do a better job here you have to do better than that you can't just turn people's lights off for 243648 hours 3 days in the case of one of our callers and say oh well we got that wrong you just can't do that that's why they're trying to get an acceptable path in Cupertino Hi Thanks for waiting here on the Patterson show with Angie Claire Oh. And say I just want to clarify something sure I agree with Andrew but my husband. Is working installing solar farms all over the west coast of Texas Arizona Utah Southern California and he dealt directly with the p.c. And what the electric company knows electric and a lot of the comments are coming from people that don't know electric including yourself Ok the California Public Utilities Commission does know we like to they're all of bloods of politicians that my husband and he got real adamant about it but they're all liars the Public Utility Commission is all liars let me finish let me finish my comment Ok I have had that dealing with them they they tied here the electric company and I'm not defending. Any of them on the west coast Ok the reason why the winds are buried is because. It's not it's not just getting access to some property like fix a transformer they can come in your property able to get pleasure Can you imagine digging up everybody's property that would be a legal nightmare the insulated line and probably those areas in our house will be insulation not exposed to sun or the elements. They are the current lines that are usually last a 100 years insulated line last 5 years there's 22000 miles away or. Are you willing to pay a couple $1000.00 for electric if you cost prohibitive Pat I appreciate everything you're saying but what I think I'm not hearing that you know I'm going to have to have you be finished for just a minute because you're putting out a lot of information and I'm going to talk to you about some of it one is I think that is even accurate to say that everyone who's having issues with how this was done this is aside from whether we bury the wires this is aside from the insulated wires that some one of our listeners suggested earlier aside from all that the Public Utilities Commission has taken p.g. Me to task as has the governor for how this was handled that's over and above whether you're talking about burying wires that's over and above insulation and where you may say Gavin Newsome is in fact a politician I don't think you can look at every member of the p.u.c. And saying that we're looking at a bunch of politicians and liars so you know people for years about his opponent so I coming from out there but let me finish my last point there for those floor lines that pretty much like to see the barrier the area that they come in that was predicted to be very windy Mt Diablo had 70 mile per hour wind and a few years back those will knock down a wire of a fire with up to Oakland Ok yeah we give up or like to see her a few days some people longer than others but we didn't have any fires Ok I have friends I've been reading better. Medically compromised family members of the fort . Ok I don't know anybody it was a paradise but they had relatives that were it was everything my daughter was involved from that school at Davis getting the horses rescuing the horses. Yet Pat when I was about 3 and one more than we don't you and I both agree that fire is horrible you and I both agree that it needs to be prevented Can you see that there is any daylight between leaving it and going to actually put you back on hold to your path because to get a thought out of your edgewise Can you see that it is possible that we need to be vigilant that we need to do examinations of the lines that we need to be careful with equipment and still say that the way it was handled this time around was faulty I mean I mean is there room for that somewhat I was what I have a problem with it was that good to have to wonder is an emergency and they felt the weather report so to blame p.g. Any or Peterson or whatever for taking out people that didn't have one in their back yard it's like there was somewhere I was going to predict but we didn't have a fire l.a. Gun fire so you're saying that you're saying that everything p.g. Needed this time should not be questioned nothing about the way it was going to be questioned I said the communication of how like the weather could handle traffic I gotta let you go on taxes we got a break coming up here you know we just disagree and I think that when you bring up the fires you're absolutely right fires are reality death loss destruction all of which is horrible all of which we've witnessed some of us have lived through I had callers both during the John Rothmann show and today of people who lived through the fires who have really serious problems with how it was how it was handled this time around that go well beyond communication. 8080810 let's get this break on the path there's an showing come right back I'm Angie Quero 10 you're listening to the 1st show filling in for bad today. And this is Pat there is Jenin thank you for filling in for me today I'm not out of the studio there though I am here and I'm here because I'm doing something that is incredibly worthwhile and that is saving the lives of children but I certainly need your help there's a state of emergency that's been declared in Somalia as a drought continues year after year after year animals have died no crops can be grown and the lack of food and clean water is costing children their lives but there are things that we can do about it we can provide the nutrition assistance these children need in order to live Yeah I actually had the opportunity today to travel and meet some people who have been displaced I met a young mother who traveled from her community about 30 miles to the nearest hospital she wanted to make sure to deliver her baby in the hospital she took just a couple of her young kids with her and left some at home with her father and she's actually given birth and does not have the means to get home but not only that she doesn't want to go home because there's not enough food at their home to feed all of their children erm she's even struggling just to feed them as it is and to be able to nurse her baby on a daily basis so she is relying completely on the support of other people around her just horrible scenery I mean all these people are very temporary but some stick
