And welcome back to coast to coast George Norry with the Along with Kevin Mitnick will get your calls as well this hour goes by quickly Kevin Lowe So when you set up your security firm How did you begin to market yourself or did they just come to you they just came to me I mean based I guess on my past history Sure it's almost like Pavel Escobar becoming a pharmacist right so. But. Yeah I mean I don't do any marketing today and with no before I'm kind of the brand behind the company. And we're down to over 800 employees we're a 1000000000 dollar company we have like 20000 customers so you know we're doing it we're doing extremely well because we're able to really help our clients protect their users getting fooled by the bad guys you know because we have phishing attacks you know where there's malicious e-mails that are sent you have people that call you up over the phone there was a there's a security company called Black Hills security that found a vulnerability in a couple years ago and this is the really scary where hackers could place calendar events if you're using g. Mail or g. Suite if you're using Google for your email provider they could put. Calendar events in your calendar and they could obviously put links there like in have something like all hands meeting you know at 9 am this morning Click here to join and when the victim clicks there to join well. Maybe join the meeting but they're going to have some special software on their computer that they won't like so it's a it's really rewarding and challenging to really help you know help companies you know prevent those from happening to them and these people these scammers I mean they'll send you things like a logo of your bank and say hey there's a problem logging on they trick you don't say oh yeah our in your email it might read something you might say click here click here to read more and when you click there to read more it's a. Potentially interaction over your computer. System many different types of what we call pretext a pretext of the story that's in the email that convinces the victim to follow the instructions and you can imagine when you have a sophisticated bad actor and they go do some research on your company that's public on that you know on the Internet that's what they call open source and telling a lot of sense for short so the bad actors do a lot of 0 cents on the company a lot of research on the people the easiest way to research the people that work for companies as he's linked in which is a you know obviously the right through social network for business and then. What the bad actors do is they create stories like pretending to be from a vendor pretending to be another employee they might send a malicious e-mail. After having initial communications 3 or 4 times and on the 4th e-mail that's the malicious e-mail and any time there's an event that you have Pietschmann issues with Donald Trump you know you get an e-mail here's the secret you know here's the secret for a Ukrainian phone call Click here to listen and they'll use current events for example. To do this you know you know Edward Snowden recently came out and said when he was looking through the n.s.a. Classified data stores there's no U.F.O.'s and imagine maybe somebody on your show would say well if Snowden is wrong here's the actual proof that you get the idea you know is exactly attracting you it's interesting because a sociology. The best way to get compliance is to frame the request where somebody is going to will voice losing something losing access losing money use it losing image and if the fraudster could frame the e-mail and that way it's more likely the victim of click and for cooperate or open up the attachment or follow whatever instructions are in the mail and nowadays they have a thing called business e-mail compromise so the fraudsters to care less about breaking into the company's computer systems they just want to steal money so they do the. Research that I discussed a moment ago and they look for people in the company that are authorized to send wires. And then what they'll do they send them invoices and stuff don't say no they'll basically send an e-mail to that person pretending to be the c.f.o. Or the c.e.o. Of the company and this is I mean this is a multibillion dollar fraud that's going on and hitting numerous companies and trick that individual into sending a bank wire and what they call all the time Oh so if if you if you're interested in this you know you're a Google business e-mail compromiser be easy for short it's happening all the time so now the thing is that the bad guys don't even have to break into your computer they could just trick somebody and in the company if you don't have good processes and controls in place just to wire the money on believable what about robo calls Kevin what do you know about sound they're annoying I get them all the time I get telemarketers I even installed an app that they had in the Apple app store that didn't really help that much Basically I just keep blocking a mistake on my to block them. As well you know when I was a you know when I was in school as a kid you know the most coveted piece of information and it wasn't like I needed to do anything with it or other students was always getting like a fake i.d. So if you could if you knew the secret to get a fake id you know you're considered cool but you know let's change that a little bit and think about today. You know about all these data breaches that happen you know tons of companies are compromised you know pretty much on a weekly basis so there are Web sites not on the dark web there on the surface web that you could actually go to and you could search through those data breaches for people's passwords that they've used before like that Adobe as a Linked In and numerous you know. Thousands of sites of the been compromised in the past and what companies have done is they've aggregated all this data that contains people's usernames and passwords and email addresses and addresses they've used in the past and you could basically search for this information that's almost like back in junior high of getting the fake id of actually having this information to be able to on cover what passwords people use and not only that you know people if they're changing their passwords will typically use the same password pattern right so access or so they don't forget it right and they will always have the same root password with you know the root word you know and have a number after the birthday they might have their initials on their birthday that sort of thing and there's a fight out there and I pay you know $170.00 for every 3 months and I use those for security testing but people should consider going to the site to see if their own passwords show up and that should be the indicator that people should use a password manager and not choose their passwords you know themself because it's a really bad idea and. The industry is actually going away from passwords there's a company out there called Truth on there that's actually developing a technology where you use your mobile phone to prove who you are you don't even use a password and. You know and it's you know in the early adoption stages but the site is called We leased info dot com That's like getting the fake id so to speak back in you know the school days and with us we really can foad com I highly suggest you put your name in it put your e-mail address and see if your passwords come up and if your passwords come up you know changing the media steps should be changing them and not using the same pattern that's amazing Let's go to the phones let's go to Mike in Denver Colorado to get things started hey Michael go ahead. Good evening George just thank you so much for taking my call it heaven on the Carnally grateful for sure I have a night a couple questions for you and I want to get your take on 1st of which he recently there was a case for the cyber criminal Ross Albrecht to President Trump to be released do you think that his sentence of essentially life in prison was a justified one and 2nd of all I wanted to get your take on the movie Live Free or Die Hard in that movie it talked about a fire sale which is a term describing a 3 stage coordinated attack on a country transportation telecommunications financial utility systems gear hacking do you think this concept is a possibility in real life and how much of that movie do you think was based off of you and take it take um my call I thank you Melissa let's start with either one of those 1st Sure Russel Brett that's remembered earlier in the show George I mentioned the fight called Silk Road Yup and it was a fight that was actually created by Ross you know to. The drug deal and he was fighting son for life in prison without parole I think it's too harsh I think the sentence was really to set an example and to put a young guy away for the rest of his life without the possibility of ever walking out of prison. For setting up a Web site you know to you know engage in drug dealing I think it is hard there might be people with other opinions that think he deserves a life I think. You know you have murderers and rapists than other you know criminals that physically hurt people that get less time as far as the question about the fire sale could it potentially happen live that movie by the way that Bruce Willis movie I was actually interviewed in the u.k. Version so I'm on the d.v.d. Set of course all these movies are fictionalized and what you see in motion pictures you should really believe that will happen in real life most of the time and with that said it's interesting because my book was to the wires a very well known show where under has purchased by the rights to actually do the movie based on that book so I'm hoping in about one to 2 years they'll be of movie you know I don't know if I'll be called Ghost in the wires but it will be basically my life story hopefully told in a in a good and productive way I'm going to have a t.v. Producer contactee 2 cats because I might be interested in a weekly series and Ok I mean I told my right so basically they probably precluded from doing anything but the guy who actually purchased it they can't mention it on the air. Is it somebody that I think could do a fantastic job in this area but you can you can still work on something could you if it's not just on you so exactly Ok I have to be fictionalized I believe absolutely so that what's been going on in the world of hacking in and it continues is big brother listening in on OSs Yeah. I mean I think the clear evidence of that was in the Snowden revelations back in 2013 sure at least the Mehta data meaning that Alice is calling Bob in what to any times a day they call each other and you know how long they talk on the phone this type of you know meditating is absolutely no doubt. Obtained by you know not tional Security Agency and probably other intelligence agencies and stored and searched. But I believe even if it could pose potentially go to the contents of calls. We have to think about this Teligent agency is not going to intercept the call and for the voice of the call the recording of the call what they'll do is do voice to text in-store the transcript of the call and imagine when you're storing text how much data you can actually store that the National Security Agency opened up a huge data center in Utah. You know within that I believe the last couple years. Or the stuff right to store the data basically the way that if you want to protect your communications download an app called signal. And a.o.l. That did it I mind you anything could be compromised by the way why is it it is a free app it's a free app now how do they make money by the way on free apps. Maybe advertising that pop up is behind that's a guy name is. The name he goes by the moxie marlinspike really intelligent security Moxie Merlin spite you have marlinspike of course it's a fake name but he's the one that you know will be behind developing signal and making it available to the public no one has money not for money but to you know. He was on a mission to help people protect the secrecy of their communications and I believe whatsapp. Purchased a license to use the technology he developed I'm uncertain that's the rumor on the street. But what the app does how it works is it uses what they call and to and in Christian so the keys are actually stored on your phone on each party's device but intelligence agency has the capability to actually compromise people's device so you don't think that the National Security Agency or an intelligence agency in a nation state can't monitor your communications if you're using signal because a if you're targeted they both certainly can but if you're trying to protect your communications from a lawyer who might want to subpoena information because of a divorce or. A reserve protect yourself against fraudsters or you're having business communications about stock sales and that sort of thing signal is the best way to go and it's very interesting take Let's go now to Joe in Long Island New York a Joseph go ahead yeah Kevin when you do the china stuff for example if you do cross country hacking what the language barrier be an issue rather than a few What tykes had someone to see a mouse with on me really wasn't understand it and I don't know I mean the odds of that are used in other countries are in English you know not normally and they have the same so just because. You're dealing with different countries really a minor difference what else just yet all is that the psyche are being disassociated I mean you started this Kevin when he was 17 is the idea that say someone to do a major had taken had the Hoover Dam and then still a wall of service and then donate a turkey sandwich and disassociate themselves because I didn't deal with the computer did it yeah I mean that's the hardest part when there are computer crimes as what they call attribution trying to identify the. The thread actor behind the hack and it's really difficult these days if you're dealing with a sophisticated person now a few months ago there was this guy who lived in Seattle that decided he was going to hack in the Capital One you know the fight in the bank and bank credit card company
