Abcs david wright brings us insight on the miracles from a higher power. Reporter from the miracle of creation to the parting of the red sea to the last judgment, the Sistine Chapel is a room full of miracles. Here at the vatican the term miracle is not taken lightly. Right across from st. Peters is the congregation for the causes of saints. Behind these huge doors investigators spent years poring over reports of miracles, trying to determine if they are truly miraculous. It has to be lasting, instantaneous, perfect and scientifically inexplicable. Reporter in catholic theology miracles are the proof of sainthood, acts of divine intervention, friendly help from above. The idea shows miracle shows youre definitively in heaven as a sign of gods favor. Reporter 78 of the 265 popes are saints. 16 more are halfway there, including blessed pope john paul. The vatican confirmed one miracle to him, curing a french nun afflicted with parkinsons disease. If the church can verify a second miracle he will be sainted. As they solemnly march into the Sistine Chapel, naming the saints, one by one, and asking for their prayers. Not necessarily asking for miracles, but as they make this momentous decision, certainly looking for friendly help from above. David wright, abc news, rome. So back in the 13th century they actually were looking for a miracle as far as finally selecting a pope came. They had to lock them in. It took threeplus years. So, they locked the cardinals in and then they took the roof off wherever they were con gated so they could finally come up with a decision. Wait a minute. We may have a winner. Apparently there are new drugs being developed not available to the masses just yet. They are essentially going to be synthetic versions of a chemical found in wine that could help us all live a lot longer, to the age of to the tune of 115 years old. What . I dont want to botch this pronouncer here, found in red wine believed to have an antiaging effect that boosts a certain protein in your body. So glaxosmithklein theyre testing medications out now. Could be a big deal for cancer, Heart Disease, alzheimers and help us live much, much longer lives than what we live now. I wonder with studies and developments like that how do they know 150 . There is no 150yearold running around. Unless there is a 150yearold running around theyve been giving it to and we dont know yet. Telling you, as of now. I will take it. Something with the red wine. There will be different studies tomorrow. Drink a glass of red wine. Or wait five minutes and then youll find another study that says red wine is bad for you. So convenient. Get to throw that out into the ocean. Environmentalists call her. Bad news for all of you insomniacs, a lack of sleep does make you fat. Announcer from abc news, this is world news now. Good morning to you, im diana perez. Im rob nelson. All eyes of course will be on the vatican starting in just a few hours. Looking for that telltale, white smoke. That will be the signal that a new pope has in fact been chosen. Well have much more on the start of the papal conclave and how the process is expected to work. Well look at some of the challenges the new pope will face from the sex abuse scandal to the state of the vatican finances. The new pope will have a heavy workload. While were on the theme of religion, a look at a blockbuster miniseries on the History Channel, of all things. Theres a reason its called the greatest story ever told. How the stories of the bible are capturing the imagination of a whole new generation. We have a superduper epic the skinny this morning. Lots of entertainment news, the big bachelor finale was last night. We will tell you who won. And also this half hour, my colleague has a major announcement to share with you. Yes, i will be the next bachelor. You are going to want to stick around for this one. Big news coming from yonder. Yes, some changes coming down the pike. Good changes. Good things. It is a good thing. Thats right. First, a live look at vatican city as the 115 cardinals prepare to enter the Sistine Chapel to select the next pope. What goes on inside this ancient building is carried out in complete secrecy. Even the swiss guards are sworn not to talk about what goes on inside. Abcs cecilia vega has more. Reporter before the doors to the Sistine Chapel are locked, an oath of secrecy for the only people allowed in during the conclave. Is this daunting for some people . I think it frightens them. Some have told me it is a scary moment. Because they dont want to make a mistake. Reporter the voting may begin right away. Up to four times a day until twothirds of the cardinals agree on a name. They write their choices on paper ballots, one at a time they walk to the altar. Under the watchful eye of the mike angelos last judgment cast their votes. Three cardinals do the counting and then those ballots are burned. Never to be seen again. Even in this modern world, it is a centurys old ritual that delivers the results. Black smoke means no decision. White, there is a new pope. This is the black smoke right here. Yes. This is the white. Reporter the white smoke. How do te do it . An Italian Special effects crew gave us a demonstration. Seems easy. A bit dangerous. Reporter a bit dangerous. So i should stand back. Yes, because its really hot. Reporter turns out creating smoke in the vatican is like creating smoke for movies. So, no pope . No, wait. Reporter not today. Maybe tomorrow. Reporter maybe tomorrow. The conclave used to burn wet straw to make black smoke. Today it uses a mix of chemicals. But sometimes even in the vatican the plan fails. In 2005 the smoke wasnt just black or white, it was both. In 1958 there was gray smoke. In 1978 it blew right back inside the Sistine Chapel and made the cardinals sick. Today our smoke was bright white. All we were missing was a new pope. I can hear the crowds in st. Peters square cheering already. Cecilia vega, abc news, rome. No matter who is chosen as the next pope, he faces major challenges. The vatican is still under pressure to reveal more about failure to protect children from abusive priests. And the new pope has to restore discipline to the scandal plagued vatican. Father thomas reese covers the vatican for the National Catholic reporter. The last two papacies we elected the smartest man in the room. Brilliant theologianses. Maybe it is time to elect some one who listens to all the other smart people in the room. Someone who brings together all these people who Work Together on the common problems facing the church. Theres also the challenge of those, particularly here in the u. S. And in europe, who say they have no religion at all. I read an article pointing out some of the Little Secrets of the conclave, some of the behindthescenes stuff. This i found fascinating. No one ever refused. If you get elected you dont say, no thanks, guys. You take it. So many new popes are overcome with emotion. The first room they enter to get dressed, that room is called the room of tears because theyre so emotional about their election that they cant contain themselves. A lot have walked out, have had an emotional moment where, sitting being elected in the garb about to greet the world literally. They call it the room of tears. The closest man to god here on earth. I can only imagine what the feeling must be like. Talk about being the president or elected leader pales in comparison. Just a little pressure. A little spotlight. I do feel like this next pope will have more pressure on his shoulders than any other pope before him because not only is there scandal and so much scandal, but it is so incredibly public. And there is so much social media and so much information out there now, that this next pope will have to address it. Unlike benedict, who did address it, he didnt address it in the way a lot would have liked. Our team of course will be covering it all live starting at 11 30 eastern time. As the conclave officially gets under way. Stay right here for abc news. Back here at home, a 6monthold baby girl is fighting for her life after being shot five times on a chicago street.
