Tonight, the upper floor still with water in the hall ways. The patients awaiting heart surgery. Good evening tonight from panama city, where it was only today when so many of the people who live here realized the true extent of the destruction, the devastation left behind by the hurricane. Never before had they endured a category 4 hurricane and keep in mind, this was nearly a category 5. Tonight, we have just landed after flying in a blackhawk over the worst hit area, mexico beach. The moment you come in view, you can see it, homes wiped off the earth. Some sitting in the middle of the street. Buildings with the roof tops gone and remember, thats right where near it made land fall, 155 Miles Per Hour. Right here in panama city tonight, much of the Jinx Middle School did not survive. Two of the walls are completely gone tonight. This evening we are embedded with essentially asearch and re, they go door to door looking for people who may have tried to ride out the hurricane. And trees toppled on homes. Across north carolina, virginia, as it moves right up the coast. But were going to begin here tonight with what we witnessed moments ago flying over a decimated mexico beach. Tonight, the scene is unimaginable. The devastation on mexico beach as seen from above. Hurricane michael making landfall at 155 Miles Per Hour and this is what a strong category 4 hurricane will do. Its almost impossible to describe the destruction here from Hurricane Michael here on mexico beach. There are some buildings Still Standing. Others are completely destroyed. From the sky, nearly every building we fly over is damaged in some way. The roof tops blown right off the homes. Entire blocks reduced to splintered piles of debris. This is all that remains of so many homes and families still waiting to return. You can see in many places, homes that have been simply swept away. Homes sitting in the middle of streets, clearly swept away by the storm surge. There is another view from this drone flying over mexico beach. Entire roof tops blocking the streets. The sheer power of michael, nearly a category 5 hurricane, ravaging the coastline community. It was stunning landing moments ago. And what we saw from the air, ginger zee saw firsthand on the ground. She was right there on the ground and when it passed, she went outside and this is what she documented in the moments after. The scene of devastation, no power of light and the area completely cut off. And you heard ginger talk about the power of the storm surge. It was that moment on with a Special Report that she watched that home, the force of the surge lifting it off its foundation and then going right past her down the street. The wind driving us inside. And then, that moment we will never forget. I just saw something i have never seen in real life. I saw an entire home taken off its foundation and roll down the street. My heart is racing. Again, i have never seen Something Like an entire home, a wellbuilt home, rolling down the street. And i will tell you right now, it makes you shake. Moments later, our live Broadcast Signal cutting out. Mexico beach taking a direct hit. And when it was possible to venture out again that is where the house used to be the reality sets in. Now the home that i saw floating away should be standing there. It is no longer. Take another look at the image from above. Theres the condo where we road out the storm and across from it, where there was once a blue house, not an empty hole. Morning after now and the smell of destruction is thick. Its very eerie. Today we set out on foot. To see what is left. We made it about ten blocks and the destruction hasnt ended. The job ahead, overwhelming. A local bulldozer working to clear a path. One man trying to do everything he could. In this wasteland, we meet a husband and wife. They stayed behind in the home as the water rushed in. You swam out of your home. Yes. To a boat . Yeah. And that is how you survived. Yes. They credit a pair of life jackets to keeping them alive. The wind is going 120 Miles Per Hour. We let the current take us to the next stop and then we grabbed on to a tree. And they asked us to get word to their mother they are okay. Finally, we got a signal. They rode out the entire five hours of the storm. My husband and i i have never been more worried about one of my children in my life. Reporter so many people desperate for news, and then we heard from from someone else. Jenny caputo who watched our report. And that she is the owner of the blue house, now gone. Hello, this is jenny. Reporter we reach her by phone in atlanta. I cant imagine if it were my home. I am heart broken. We only had the house five months. We have been coming to mexico beach for over ten years and we gist just love it. Finally bought a place there that we were going to enjoy with our young family. We will be back. A Tractor Trailer flipped over on its side. Then we arrive at bay medical center. Where we are told there is an urgent effort to get the patients out. The most critical moved first. The hospital is hit, the Windows Breaking and the power going out. The Emergency Doors blown in and the wind racing through the e. R. You literally put this on to let people know they had to go around the building . Yeah. Reporter the doctors taking us new in the other entrance and describing the winds and rescuing the patients. The wind made a wind tunnel through and we had to physically block off the doors which was actually fairly difficult to do. Reporter how did you do that . We put stretchers up and bars across the doors to keep the doors from flying open. Reporter on an upper floor, a cardiologist taking us down a hallway where cardiac patients, some awaiting heart surgery, were right there when it hit. Moved away from windows and to safety. You can see the hole through the glass here. He tells me the wind was howling, the windows shaking. You can see the water still on the floor. Our hospital is filled with patients. A lot of them are sick and had to be moved quickly. Reporter they had to carry some of the patients down stairwells to safety and they began this morning evacuating the most critical first including a woman pregnant with twins who had gone in premature labor. The helicopters have been taking the most krill cat patients to a neighboring hospital. One of the hospitals is in pensacola, a threehour drive. Which is why they flying the patients. Back in front of the hospital, dr. Patel reassuring his wife, her husband awaiting double bypass surgery. There was water every where. We were terrified. While back at the hospital, another flight taking off. Getting the patients out. I cannot say enough about the Search And Rescue teams going door to door or the doctors and nurses at the hospitals, some showing up before the hurricane hit, working around the clock now. Fleets of Utility Trucks on the job across the storm zone, several states tonight. And officials warn some customers, it could be days, even weeks before the power is back on.
