What they are urging people who have been out in the streets, exposed to others, what they should now do. Good evening. And its great to have you with us on a monday night. We begin with the president speaking at the white house, moments ago, amid word that active Duty Army Military Police units from ft. Bragg, north carolina, are getting ready to be in the washington, d. C. , area tonight. The National Guard, of course, already there. Coming after a weekend of pain and cries for justice. Reporter in front of the white house, President Trump addressed the nation in front of the rose garden. After more than 24 hours out of public view. I am your president of law and order. And an ally of all Peaceful Protesters. But in recent days, our nation has been gripped by professional anarchists, violent mobs, arsonists, criminals, looters, rioters, antifa, and others. A number of state local governments have failed to take the action necessary to safeguard their residents. Reporter minutes before the president spoke, military police descended on a crowd of Peaceful Protesters near the white house. Firing flashbangs and tear gas into the crowd. Prior to that, the president walked through a photo op of st. Johns church, holding up a w d bible. Today the president unloaded in a Conference Call with governors of both parties. He urged them to, quote, dominate violent protesters and rioters. Were strongly looking for arrests. You have to get much tougher, youre going to get overridden. You have to dominate. If you dont dominate, youre wasting your time. Theyre gonna run over you. Youre gonna look like a bunch of jerks. You have to dominate. And you have to arrest people, and you have to try people, and they have to go to jail for long periods of time. Reporter on the call, the secretary of defense described americas cities as a, quote, battlespace. The sooner that you mass and dominate the battlespace, the quicker this dissipates. Reporter his voice rising, the president told the governors flatout, most of you are weak. Blaming them for letting the violence spiral out of control. It was incredible what happened. In the state of minnesota, they were a laughingstock all over the world. Ive never seen anything like it, and the whole world was laughing. Reporter on the call, illinois governor j. B. Pritzker took the president to task over his rhetoric. Ive been extraordinarily concerned about the rhetoric thats been used by you. Its been inflammatory and its not okay for that officer to choke george floyd to death. Weve called out our National Guard and our state police but the rhetoric thats coming out of the white house is making it worse. People are feeling real pain out there. Okay, well, thank you very much, j. B. I dont like your rhetoric much either. Because i watched it with respect to the coronavirus, and i dont like your rhetoric much either. The president and that very tense phone call with governors today. The president saying its a war in a sense. And jon, one of the republican governors pushing back . Reporter charlie baker, the republican governor of massachusetts with harsh words about what the president said. He said, and i want to quote this, i should be surprised when i hear incendiary words like this from him, but im not. At so many times in the past weeks, when the country needed compassion and leadership the most, it was nowhere to be found. Instead, bitterness, combativeness, and selfinterest. Saying that from the president is not what massachusetts and the country needs. David . Jon, thank you. I understand yall upset, but like it was already said, i doubt yall are half as upset as i am. So if im not over here wilding out, if im not over here blowing up stuff, if im not over here messing up my community, what are yall doing . What are yall doing . Yall doing nothing, because thats not going to bring my brother back at all. My family is a peaceful family. My family is godfearing. Reporter encouraging people to make their voice matter and vote. Not just vote for the president. Vote for the preliminaries. Vote for everybody. Educate yourself. Its a lot of us. And we still going to do this peacefully. Reporter the younger floyd pressing for people to keep protesting. He wants anger. But anger that can make change. And he also wants those three other officers who were involved to be charged with murder. Peace on the left. Justice on the right reporter the Minneapolis Police chief Medaria Arradondo last night addressing floyds family directly on live tv, calling those officers complicit. Being silent or not intervening, to me, youre complicit. So i dont see a level of distinction any different. Mr. Floyd died in our hands and so i see that as being complicit. Reporter former officer Derek Chauvin under suicide watch and charged with third degree murder, seen in that horrific video. The floyd family attorney releasing an independent autopsy claiming his death was a homicide from asphyxia. Just moments ago the medical examiner also ruling it a homicide. Saying floyd dying from a heart attack complicated by Law Enforcement restraint and neck constriction. The states attorney general now vowing to charge others responsible, yet warning convictions might be a challenge. But that doesnt mean that when we get to a courtroom that its going to be some sort of easy slam dunk. History proves that it isnt. Reporter terrance then leading a rousing tribute to the crowd. Whats his name . George floyd whats his name . George floyd reporter before leaving, seeking out a white protester in order to show a powerful moment of unity. But despite the flashes of violence and destruction, demonstrators determined to stay focused and have their message heard. Ac shau has the ld be peace, message, period. Thats it. Look at this, peaceful, thats all. Just hear us. George floyd i cant watch no more of this. Im sorry, but if i see one more name of another brother dead, im gonna lose it, im gonna lose my mind. And in new york, outrage over the use of force. This woman taken to the hospital after being shoved to the ground. The mayor calling for another officer who pulled a gun on a group of protesters to be fired. Any officer who should not be wearing that uniform needs to get off this force. Reporter david, police in new york city believe there are a number of outside groups infiltrating peaceful protests. And i can tell you, just a few moments ago, things were really tense here, demonstrators facing off with nypd officers, demanding they take a knee and demanding justice. David . Stephanie, thank you. Now to the state of emergency in los angeles tonight. Curfews back in place there, as we learn new information about some of the people in the crowds taking advantage of this moment. Heres matt gutman now. Reporter tonight, l. A. Under curfew, shut down and boarded up. For days protesters marching into places like beverly hills. Squaring off against police in mostly peaceful protests, from l. A. s city hall, secured by to National Guard, to the heart of santa monica. What youre seeing right now is police squeezing the protesters. They have actually surrounded us. Eye ng in from all and when that didnt work, tear gas. On the fringes of the protests, we saw looting. Despite a countywide curfew protesters leaving this supermarket ransacked, trying to stuff that widescreen into a sedan. Another store looted. People going in. People coming out with arms full of goods, and police nowhere in sight. In long beach, they were right there as looters burst through the boardedup windows of that retailer. But the microcosm is that america has its knee on the minorities necks every single ac repter ti aacve but over 1,500 people have been arrested in los angeles over the past 48 hours or so.
