KGO ABC World News With Diane Sawyer March 6, 2014

This wednesday night. It is a rite of passage in american life. And today, we learned it is an extreme makeover. The s. A. T. S, that test millions of High School Students take after sleepless nights and nervous preparation. And the results can make a difference into getting into college. But are those tests really fair . And will big changes make it possible for all children to get ahead . Abcs cecilia vega breaks down the big news. Reporter it is the test taken by millions of americans. Every generation for over 80 years. Now changing to become more modern, relevant and fair. Obscure Vocabulary Words that only ever seem come up in multipletest questions, gone. Words like panegyric, occlusion, phlegmatic. That means not easily excited, in case you didnt know. Replaced by words people actually use in College Classrooms and on the job. The redesigned s. A. T. Will instead focus on words students will use over and over again. Reporter the changes take effect in 2016. And they are meant to level the playing field. Some s. A. T. Prep courses can run as high as 20,000. Now, the College Board is fighting back, making tutoring videos available for free. We need to dismantle the advantages in using costly Test Preparation to find out the secrets of the s. A. T. If there are no more secrets, its very hard to pay for them. Reporter other changes in the test itself make the s. A. T. More like its biggest rival the a. C. T. , which has been rapidly gaining ground. S. A. T. Reading passages now often seen as obscure, replaced with significant moments like the declaration of independence. While writing an essay will be optional on the new test, High Schoolers shouldnt celebrate just yet. Algebraic formulas arent going anywhere. Finally, no more of the 2,400 score. The top score for the s. A. T. S will once again be 1,600. Ah, cecilia. If these big changes are about fairness, why not make them immediately . Reporter they dont take place for another two years, 2016. The testers are telling us, this is to give teachers and students time to prepare. A lot of people are saying the changes, the sweeping overhaul, the s. A. T. S could make this already difficult test even tougher. The goal is for children of all economic backgrounds. Thank you so much, cecilia vega, reporting in tonight. Next, we turn to the crisis in ukraine. The superpowers are talking. But is the danger of an allout russian invasion still looming . Abcs chief Global Affairs correspondent, martha raddatz, in paris, tonight, for those critical talks. Reporter falshpoints in a redhot crisis. After putins forces took over part of ukraine, today, thousands of demonstrators showed the world their support for russia, storming past riot police to take over a government building. To the south, in crimea, a similar scene. A mob of armed men threatening u. N. Envoy richard serry, with the crowd bearing russian flags chanting behind them. Ordering the official to leave crimea. America tried to find an end to the dangerous standoff. One hope, here at these talks in paris. Get the russians and ukrainians to eventually meet, facetoface. Today, that did not happen. I dont think any of us had an anticipation that we were suddenly going to resolve that here this afternoon. Reporter the bigger goal, convince putin that his advance into crimea was bad enough. But advancing further, ignoring a nations borders, would bring the wrath of the world. But after a day of diplomacy, all russia really agreed to was to talk further. Id rather be where we are today than where we were yesterday. And martha joins us now. Martha, is there a sense that the russians are serious in earnest about talking . Or is this some kind of cover for military moves . Reporter i think what were on, diane, is kind of a diplomatic treadmill. We keep talking. They keep talking. But the incline gets steeper every day. Meanwhile, the u. S. Is carefully watching any russian moves. There have been provocative moves in the last couple of days. And the Russian Troops do remain in crimea. They did have military exercises just across the border. So, i dont think theres a lot of trust going on here from the u. S. Point of view. But no additional troop movements by the russians at this point . Reporter as far as we know, theres no additional troop movements. They are just not leaving crimea. And at least they are at the table. Thank you so much again. Martha raddatz, reporting in. And from ukraine, now, we head to egypt, to show you these startling images. Journalists in cages. There in an Egyptian Court today. Theyre on trial, charged with working with a terrorist group. Charges they deny. And some of them are members of aljazeera english. A movement is under way, calling for their release. The trial has been adjourned until later this month. Now, back here at home, a big headline turning up. And the heat is on on the gun debate in america. Today, we learned facebook and instagram will crack down on the number of illegal guns sold online, some of them weapons bought by children. Abcs senior justice correspondent, pierre thomas, showing whats behind this decision. Reporter youre looking at the sale of an ak47 Assault Rifle in an arizona fast food parking lot. It came less than an hour after reporter Mariana Van Zeller saw it for sale on the internet. No background check. No questions asked. Critics say social media sites like facebook and instagram are becoming virtual gun stores, giving potentially easy access to juveniles and criminals. The internet dwarfs all the gun shows in america now as a potential source of firearms. It is difficult to police the internet. Reporter check out this on instagram, lots of guns to choose from. All kinds of Assault Rifles, handguns, just a touch or click away. Today, instagram and facebook announced a series of steps to try to make sure social media gun buyers and sellers follow the law. Facebook will block access to gun sale posts to users 18 and under. Remove gun sale postings that promote sales without background checks. It will tell users that internet gun sales crossing state lines must go through a licensed firearms dealer. The head of the nras new york affiliate warned, the policy could be used to silent gun enthusiasts on social media. This is something that could greatly get out of control very quickly. But gun control supporters say additional restrictions might save lives. Preventing dangerous scenarios, like when a 15yearold kentucky boy bought this semiautomatic handgun through facebook and took it to school. Pierre thomas, abc news, washington. And a note, today, out of washington. The white house announced, its official. If you like your old health care plan, you can keep it for another two years. Even if the plan does not meet the new requirements for insurance under obamacare. The deadline had already been extended by one year. Now, a twoyear deadline. And next, strangers intervening in the nick of time. It was a scene that had everyone holding their breath today, as a mother with three children in her minivan, drove into the ocean, into the crashing waves. The children, waving for help. Abcs Steve Osunsami shows us how some passing strangers saved the day. Reporter they werent going to let it happen. Two men passing by and three lifeguards watching a car with three children inside, driving straight into the ocean. It began like this. One of the Good Samaritans driving down the beach, sees the min ji van and hears children screaming. Believe your eyes. Thats a child waving out the window. Tim, in the green jacket, from north carolina, jumps out of his car. His wife recording it all. The young boy, still waving. Theres one kid in the backseat, just screaming. Help us. Help us. Our moms trying to kill us. Reporter 21yearold stacy robinson, at the beach with his girlfriend, runs into the water, as the car falls into the sea. By the time i ran over, i noticed the son was snatching at the wheel, trying to get her to come back toward the shore. Reporter the mother kept driving. When i was speaking to her, her eyes were like reporter wide. Wide. Reporter he uses the power windows to get the windows down and his arms around two of the children. The surf, up to his chest. He told us, he wished he had three hands because he saw a baby strapped in a car seat in the back. Lifeguards struggled to open the front door. Thats the mother trying to stop them. Watch again. Theres a struggle. And then, the mother just walks away. Seconds later, they get the baby out through the back of the minivan. One of the lifeguards, still inside, barely getting out in time. And five seconds later, look closely. A huge wave nearly pushes the car out to sea. If it had been minutes longer, the outcome probably would have been different. Reporter Police Identified the mother, 32yearold ebony wilkerson, from south carolina. Police say she was pregnant. And her family called them earlier in the day, warning she had, quote, mental issues. Police say they reached out to her. But she had done nothing wrong. A few hours later, she would end up on the beach directly behind me. Tonight, shes undergoing mental evaluations. Her children, ages 3, 9 and 10, all in state custody. And theyre alive because a few men decided to get involved. Steve osunsami, abc news, daytona beach. A few men everyone thanks tonight. And we move on, next, to the surprise testimony at the trial of olympian Oscar Pistorius, on trial for shooting his girlfriend in south africa. Today, another champion athlete introduced a kind of twist in the case. Abcs Hamish Macdonald in the courtroom for us tonight. Reporter kevin lerena is a professional boxer, a friend of Oscar Pistorius, now a witness at his murder trial. A month before reeva steenkamps killing, they were together with friends at this restaurant. One of them passed a gun under the table to pistorius. Then a shot went off in the restaurant. And then, there was complete silence. I was in shock. Reporter amid the chaos, pistorius asked his friend, darren fresco, who passed him the pistol, to take the blame. I do remember oscar saying, please, to darren, just say it was you. I dont want any attention around me. Just say it was you. Reporter this denied by the superstar athlete. While it could help prove firearms charges he faces, and could hurt his credibility, it does not prove he murdered his girlfriend. Crucial to proving that is the sequence of events the night pistorius killed reeva skeenkamp. Did witnesses hear screams before he shot through the bathroom door or after . It matters because its alleged the couple was arguing before the shooting. This is the view of the trial Oscar Pistorius has. Behind him, his family. Before him, his defense team. And at the front of the room, the judge wholl decide his fate. He denies all of the charges. Hamish macdonald, abc news, pretoria, south africa.
