KGO ABC World News With Diane Sawyer April 3, 2014

Way to reduce the risk of cancer and Heart Disease. Good evening, on this wednesday night. A special west coast edition of world news. And we begin with the breaking news, today, that shooting at ft. Hood in texas. It is the Largest Army Base in the nation, north of austin. The site of that other deadly shooting nearly five years ago. And this was the urgent message sent out to those on base. 41,000 people told to shelter in place. And this is what they heard over the speakers. Listen. Seek shelter immediately. The president has now spoken out, tonight, saying he is heartbroken. And well bring that to you in a moment. Lets go straight to abcs chief justice correspondent, pierre thomas, for the latest details on the shooter and the casualties. Pierre . Diane, multiple Law Enforcement sources tell us the shooter is dead. Authorities are in the process of clearing the base of any other potential threats. But its believed there was only one shooter. That shooter is thought to be a soldier. Were told about a dozen people have been injured. And sources tell us that four people, including the shooter, are dead. The shootings took place in a workplace facility. President obama has been monitoring the situation and just made this statement. I want to just assure all of us that we are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened. Any shooting is troubling. Obviously, this reopens the pain of what happened at ft. Hood five years ago. We know these families. We know their Incredible Service to our country and the sacrifices they make. Obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with the entire community. And we are going to do everything we can to make sure that the community at ft. Hood has what it needs to deal with the Current Situation but also any potential aftermath. Were heartbroken that Something Like this might have happened again. In addition to the military personnel at the scene, the fbi is also responding, as well as other federal agencies. Theyre now going through the base to try to secure the scene and take care of anyone who might have been hurt. This comes roughly four years, five years, after Army Major Nadal Hasan opened fire at ft. Hood, killing 13 people and wounding 32 others. It was the worst mass murder at a Major Military installation in history. So sad this tragedy has the come to this base. We know, he was a psychiatrist on base there. Let me check again. One shooter . They believe one shooter. And we are told that shooter is dead, diane. Pierre, standing watch for us on the story. And moments ago, i had a chance to speak to someone who was there on the ground when the shots rang out. Sergeant major nicholas conner, the press Information Officer at ft. Hood. Right now, diane, i can tell you that we can confirm there was a shooting. Unfortunately, this is something that we here at ft. Hood have experience with. And were just hoping that we can get to the bottom of this as soon as possible. Im trying to imagine what it is for all of you who have been through this before. And we hear it in the sighs, as youre talking about this, what was it like when you got that tweet . When you heard that alarm going out . I can tell you that back in 2009, i was actually just finishing up a deployment in iraq with the 1st cavalry division. And so, this is what we were just on the cusp of redeploying, when we got the news in baghdad. And so, you know, our redeployment joy was tampered by just the air of tragedy that was here on ft. Hood. And again, this is something that, unfortunately, we have gone through before. But i know the resiliency of the family members and soldiers here at ft. Hood will carry us through again. And the nation sending its thoughts tonight. Our thanks to Sergeant Major nicholas conner. Our thoughts with everyone there. I want to turn to abcs chief Global Affairs correspondent, martha raddatz. Martha, you have been to ft. Hood so many times. I have been there so many times, diane. And i know people think its a military post. But what this really is a community. A community of 40,000. The families live there. The soldiers live there. They have been through so much together. So many deployments. 1st cavalry division, 4th infantry division. They have all lived through so much. In fact, diane, i am supposed to be there this weekend for a reunion of a band of brothers who fought a battle ten years ago in iraq, coming together for a Memorial Service for the soldiers they lost. This will certainly be on their minds this weekend, as well. So, this community is mourning, tonight, another tragedy. And of course, examining security, as well. They are, indeed, diane. You can get on the base sometimes easily. Other times they look into i. D. S. But if its a fellow soldier, all the more tragic. Martha raddatz reporting in washington. And she will be following the story throughout the night. Well tell you more as we learn it on abcnews. Com. We move on, now, to the other big story of the day. The startling moment in chile. That powerful 8. 2 earthquake, hitting the area they call the ring of fire. Rumbling back to life. Tonight, the world has been riveted by the images streaming in. And also, asking, what does it mean here at home . Abcs bob woodruff is there. Reporter in this moment of fear, people began to move. It was strong, she said. And it went on a long time. As the earth rocked, it sparked fires. And the blare of the tsunami sirens. People running out of this pharmacy. Some holding children. Bottles tumbling from the shelves. A Mass Evacuation of nearly a Million People, fearing a destructive wave in the wake of the powerful 8. 2 magnitude quake. The injured, brought to this hospital. The aftermath, fishing boats washed ashore. Small landslides. Half a dozen dead. It could have been much worse. The country has so many earthquakes and tsunamis, theyve got these warning signs all over the city. Tsunami hazard zone. The people along the coast that we met today were ready to evacuate. This little girls mother, describing it as the earth dancing. The powerful quake struck just off the coast, 12 miles beneath the ocean floor. The surge of water it set off, rolling all the way to hawaii. The quake rumbled along the most dangerous band of fault lines and volcanos in the world, the point where the earths plates meet, stretching up along the u. S. Western coast, all the way through japan and asia. The recent los angeles quakes were not caused by the same fault line as last night. And experts say more than 1,700 earthquakes along the ring in just the past week does not mean a bigger quake is coming. There is nothing about this activity that makes it look anymore likely to be a precursor than any other earthquake. Reporter last night, all of the people along the coast here from the north to the south of chile, were given a warning to get off the beaches, to get up to the hills. This country has so much experience with earthquakes and tsunamis, the people told me, they knew what to do. And they did it well. Diane . Bob woodruff reporting in tonight, on the earthquake there. And back here at home, millions of families in the american heartland are bracing for a burst of Severe Weather. Powerful winds, golf ballsized hail and scanning the horizon for twisters. Abcs meteorologist, ginger zee, with the new forecast. Reporter hail, smothering the heartland. The windshield is gone. Reporter from missouri to texas, at least 45 reports of Severe Weather in the past 24 hours. Feels like somebody throwing rocks at you. Reporter the hail so deep, it looks like snow. So big, it looks like golf balls. Tonight, this is the region under the gun. Hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are the main threat. All of this, on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the infamous superoutbreak of 1974. One of the most violent tornado outbreaks in all recorded history. More than 140 twisters raked across the midwest, midmississippi valley and the southeast. Were watching a tornado watch in parts of oklahoma, kansas and missouri. But thats just tonight. The threat expands and intensifies as we go through the next 24 hours. So, this is for tomorrow. Youre seeing that red area there, that includes memphis, little rock, all the way up to places like st. Louis and springfield. This would be large hail, damaging wind and isolated tornadoes. Diane, this is tomorrow afternoon and evening. We want everyone to be watching their local abc stations for the very latest. All right, ginger. Thank you so much. Now, what we learned, today, about the search for flight 370. Today, the fbi announced they completed their review of that Flight Simulator found inside the pilots home. And they found nothing indicating criminal activity. Though, they say theyll continue to investigate the backgrounds of the crew. Today, officials also announced that all 227 passengers onboard have been cleared of any role in hijacking or sabotage contributing to the planes disappearance. The officials are now looking into the people who prepared the food for the flight and the team that packed the cargo. And as of tonight, the pings from the black boxes could begin to fade as early as four days from now. And this was the scene in boston, today, as fallen firefighter lieutenant eddie walsh was laid to rest. He died last week after heroically battling a ninealarm fire. And thousands of his brothers from around the world, saluted as the coffin passed. Bagpipes filling the air. And his widow was presented with her husbands wedding ring. Firemen had searched through the rubble for hours until they found that missing ring. And firefighter Michael Kennedy will be buried tomorrow. And next, here, tonight, an abc news investigation. Brian ross, back with us, oneonone, with a man accused of presiding over one of the worst mining disasters in american history. 29 workers trapped by an explosion deep underground 4 years ago. And tonight, families of the miners say there is a new outrage. What is it . Abcs chief investigative correspondent, brian ross, back now, with the story. Mr. Blankenship . Reporter even before the mine disaster, Don Blankenship was despised and feared by many in coal country. This is how he once greeted abc news. Let go of me. Let go of me. Reporter but his reign as the ceo of Massey Energy came to an end after lax Safety Practices were blamed on the deaths of 29 men 4 years ago this week in the companys Upper Big Branch mine. In west virginia. Officials said most of the men, ages 20 to 61, working 1,000 feet underground, were trapped in small groups, starved of oxygen, after a massive explosion of builtup methane gas and coal dust. At the time, blankenship told diane sawyer, it was a safe mine. I think everything you do in life has risk. Reporter but federal investigators later concluded, if basic Safety Measures had been in place, there would have been no loss of life at the Upper Big Branch mine. Well prosecute whoever maybe responsible for the conditions that existed and that led to this very horrible tragedy. Reporter so, this week, facing the possibility of federal criminal charges, blankenship showed up at abc news, seemingly gentler, but still full of venom, to make the case, hes been misunderstood. I think everybodys despised by some. Like yourself. A lot of people despise your views. So, its normal. Reporter why do you think you are despised . Because i do the right thing. Reporter because you do the right thing . Yes. Reporter its not because you do the wrong thing . No. Reporter you cut corners on safety . Never did. Reporter and as part of his selfpromotion campaign, blankenship spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce this 50minute film called never again, to refute the official accident findings and present him as a champion of mine safety. And this documentary is further evidence of his taking his responsibility seriously, even at great risk and expense to himself. Reporter some are calling it a shameful piece of propaganda that will not work. I believe that don has blood on his hand. And i believe that justice will be done. Ive got to believe that. Reporter for many of the families, the final outrage is how blankenships film makes extensive use of the names and photos of their loved ones who were killed. It was just like a slap to our faces that he would do this. Reporter do you have a sense of shame . To use these images like this . I think that a lot of the families appreciate whats being done. And some, maybe not. I think hes a liar. He is a murderer. Hes the devil. Reporter today, some of those family members demonstrated outside the federal courthouse in west virginia, demanding criminal charges be brought against blankenship. For them, that would be a powerful message to hold mine bosses accountable for the safety of the 90,000 americans who go to work every day in mines in this country, diane. Thank you, brian. Staying on the story, tonight. And next, here, tonight, a huge study. A big announcement today, about something you can do to cut your risk of disease.
