The slant. Get the corner to bite. Go north and south. Two parts here. Aiyuk has to turn and run coming out of it. But then purdy has to put that ball up there, put a little air underneath it, and let his receiver get to it. So thats a missed opportunity. Debo was talking about missed opportunities. Heres a big one. Purdy trying to do too much. Look everybody off. You had a whole flood of routes going to the right. The safety goes with it. It should have taken the take to jennings. Couldnt get it there. Here at the end, same thing. Overthrew it. Overthrowing rob coverage. Watch the man sitting in the middle. Purdy comes back to it late, sees him and reacts with the overthrow and dang it, i missed it. I love that about it, by the way. I do. I absolutely love that because my words would have been much more choice than that. Yeah they couldnt have made air had a banger tonight. George. But when you got dudes like this George Kittle who can pick you up when youre not quite on and you can throw it out to jennings, whos going to win the one on one battle . This is what helps you as a quarterback, even in the days when youre not perfect. Brock purdy is ruthlessly efficient underneath. But when you got Deebo Samuels taking the now screen to the outside and doing this, you can miss by a little bit and still be good. What that tells you is there is a lot left in brock purdys game for him to improve at that position because what youre seeing is him anticipating throws. He can see things before theyre open hes getting his feet there but as he grows hes going to anticipate even better those longer throws. Hes going to put air underneath them and theyre going to be completions. Theres going to be more points on the board after after with those throws. I dont know if you did it on purpose, but the perfect for per i was, but ill take it what was good and if thats his worst game the niners will certainly take that because as one of the keys is no turnovers just dont give the ball away and thats why he hasnt lost a regular season game there you go. I mentioned Brandon Aiyuk and we saw him in the highlights here. He only has a few days to heal up before kickoff on thursday night, limited to just three catches for 43 yards. And you can see this is early in the game and he was really in pain. It was obvious and it seemed, at least to my untrained eye, that the niners late in the game were using him more as a decoy with deebo samuel getting the majority of targets now shoulder we dont know its not believed to be really serious. But if he cant go it would obviously hamper the niners offense and id i dont know what is your feeling about thursday night football its so hard for these guys on a quick turnaround especially if you get dinged up on a sunday and be back playing on a thursday. Its tough and it depends on the extent of an injury. Shoulders are tricky as well, but theres an old saying in football for trainers and for coaches, are you hurt or are you injured . And so the question is, is aiyuk hurt or is he injured . If youre injured, you cant play. Right. But if youre hurt , then you can always just rub some turf on it and go back and see. We used to rub dirt, but its turf now. You cant run kevin rudd dirt on it anymore. But if youre just hurt, you go back and play. Aiyuk is a really important part of this offense. Without him, they have a hole in that offense. But getting back with a thursday night for a shoulder like thats a quick turnaround. Yeah. I mean, well see what the niners do you know whether they decide, look, its too soon lets just we want him for the entirety of the season and rest him but hes such a talented player. I mean hes really good. Hes really, really good. So you want him out there as a quarterback . You definitely want him out. You can see i turned my head a little stiff. I played with a broken neck my last year in the xfl. So we should point out he didnt know that his neck was broken when he was. I did not know it. He found out later. Otherwise you would have stopped, i assume. I would have stopped had i known. I probably would have stopped. Okay. Thats a good probably probably. Probably. Maybe not. All right. This is i got to do a warning right now. This is the portion of the program where the cal fans may want to look away or go to the refrigerator because you profess your love for stanford man. Christian mccaffrey, such a stud. And i imagine all of your cal people were saying, mike, a 20 carries a buck 16 and a touchdown had three catches for 19 yards, if you like football and you dont like Christian Mccaffrey, you dont really like football. This dude is a football player. I dont care where he went to school. He is outstanding. Get him the ball. He can catch it. He can run it. He has great vision. He has great understanding of the game. Being a great player, son, im sure helps him in that regard. But he has so many tools. I mean, strong forearm. Hes been in the weight room. Hes gotten better and better every year. He played he was fantastic in college and hes still great. Look at him taking the toss off the outside. Watch this. The strong finish with the get off me. Yes stiff arm. I absolutely love that Christian Mccaffrey is a stud. Whether he went to stanford or cal, this dude is a football player. So at the end of the play, ahkello witherspoon, the x niner is the one that tackles him. And they started jawing. We came out of it a little early there, but they started yapping and christian was asked about it in the game and he said, oh, all we were saying is, you know, good to see you. Did you get those gloves . I left in the locker . Exactly. Yeah. Just casual conversation, right . They i think both guys were saying more than dang well, its loud on the field. You have to raise your voice. So it looks animated, but it was probably very nice. So just touch on this real quick because elijah mitchell, the backup tailback, didnt get a carry in this game. I mean, he was just on the sidelines the whole time. It seems like the niners are trying to get christian the ball in his hands whether its a handoff or swing pass, whatever it is, like 25 touches at his size. Is that too much . I dont know if thats too much. I mean he is such a good football player. 25 touches. I think for him. A hes going to be carrying it inside zone, outside zone. You sell that toss, theres going to be some run plays that are designed just for him. But then you also get him the ball on the swing passes. You get him the ball in the open space, you run him on the texas or the angle route. So theres a lot of stuff that he does. 25 touches. I try to get him the ball more than that personally because hes such a good football player, but you need it for the back end. But you also you also have other tools everywhere around that you can work with. So you dont just need to be on your running back the entire time, but hes really good. As i said, i like him pretty much with everything he does. Hes a tremendous player. I just want to make sure we see him in october, november, december and january. The running back position we talked about the running back position is hard on human beings. Speaking of which, we just got the official word that nick chubb is going to be out for the entirety of the season after a really gruesome knee. I dont think there was much doubt after seeing. No, no, there was not more to come. On toyota after the game. We talked niners who have a quick turnaround even quicker for the new york giants because they got to travel. Well show you what they need to study night football, a home opener for the niners at levis stadium. Giants going to be without Saquon Barkley, who scored a couple of touchdowns a short run had a td catch hes clearly new yorks most dynamic weapon but he sprained his ankle late in that victory. We sorry for those of you that have saquon and he was your number one pick in fantasy. Oh, right. Thats me. Anyway hes projected to be out for three weeks. They say its not the dreaded high ankle sprain, which takes longer to heal. But obvious frustration for him on the sidelines there. Three years ago, he blew out his acl. Also in week two. Whatever you make of that. And another interesting connection between these teams is that matt breida is the backup for the giants, the former nightbreed of the cheetah. Three of the cheetah super fast. But but this is obviously a huge loss for the giants who dont have a great prolific offense to begin with. Well we talked about how tough it is on running back Saquon Barkley is a stud when you dont have your main guy toting the rock, it makes it way harder on the offense. Yeah. So now the burden really is on daniel jones to carry the giants offense. Now hes got some skills threw for 321 yards to touchdowns. Had a pick 3128 over arizona again that game was probably closer than a lot of people expected. He can make plays with his legs and that may be where hes most dangerous. Nine carries 59 yards. The touchdown here, hes got good speed. Heres the thing that just kills me. He signed a four year, 160 Million Contract extension back in march. Dont you wish you were coming out of college right now to play in the nfl . Wouldnt it . Youd be getting paid. And cal actually minimum is so much more than it used to be. When i came out like i got a stick of bubble gum and a hot cup of coffee when i came out. So that was that was my pay. But more power to him. This game is all about entertainment. Youre taking the shots. So if daniel jones is taking the shots and he can negotiate that contract, more power to him. Yeah. Top targets. Exraider darren waller, the rookie jalen hyatt out of tennessee. I dont mind paying Patrick Mahomes, who by the way, just got a massive extension. It is 210 million over four years. Remember he hed signed that ten Year Contract that made him the highest paid player in the history of everything, and he is now the. Coming into today was the eighth highest other guys jumped. Patrick how do you jump Patrick Mahomes the whole system is just so goofy. Its really good to be a quarterback no matter what it is these days is at this point. All right. Niners have a new defensive coordinator in the off season they hired steve wilks. It was kind of a bend but dont break situation in against the rams you put together with casey pratt our producer a really a great breakdown uh niners got only one sack in this game but your illustration of it. Well, lets just see it right now. I love the game behind the game and this is what were going to look at here. We talk about team defense right . Fred warner comes in, gets the sack from his linebacker position. How does that happen . Well, the defensive line is going to slant to the right. Warner is going to loop over the top when he does the right guard, whos a replacement player in this game because of injury, misses his block, doesnt come back. And so you think, okay. Warner that defensive line got a done. But no, look out to the right youve got Deshaun Gibson on the jam outhe over higbee. He stacks up two receivers now look at Matt Stafford hes looking to his right, looking for what you call a hot route or a site adjust hes got nothing. He doesnt have it. Fred warner gets home because Matthew Stafford had nowhere to go with the football. If gibson does not get the jam at the line of scrimmage on higbee, stafford gets rid of that ball and he gets a pretty good game because the middle of that field was wide open. Instead, fred warner gets the sack team defense is why the niners are so good. Good players at every spot out there. And when you have dudes like that who play great team defense and selfless team defense, you can be outstanding both sides of the ball right now for the niners a lot of good players on offense a lot of really good players on defense making Team Defensive plays. That roster is stacked. That was the only sack of the game and you wonder if the niners will blitz more Going Forward to get home but stafford gets the ball out so quickly i mean thats why the rams won the super bowl a couple of years ago. More to come on toyota after the game there was another monday night game. Derek carr, we used to see derek carr around here a lot, then vegas and now in new orleans. Can he lead the saints to a two and zero record . Thats next. Both simple and lifechanging. Whats not a choice . Addiction to opioids like fentanyl. But even with opioid use disorder, you still have a choice. By choosing treatment, you choose family, your career and your life on your terms. Choose change, california, and find medically proven Treatment Options at choosechangeca. Org. Browns and steelers. Terrible towels everywhere. First play from scrimmage by Deshaun Watson , picked by alex highsmith, who did not. High step but he did take it to the house. 30 yards pick six to start it for the steelers. I know as a quarterback you see a ball go through a guys receivers hands and youre not that thrilled with it. But this is the other browns receiver got a block on the play as well so pick six. That makes it tough. This is the sad story of nick chubb and you see the anguish in his face done for the season. Later in the drive, watson scrambling here to jerome ford for the touchdown. Ford backing up chubb. He looks like hes pretty good. 16 carries 106 yards, three receptions, 25 yards. And the touchdown, were speeding things up. Kenny pickett to george pickens. Hes not really that fast 71 yards and pickett just got drilled, but he hung in there and delivered the ball third quarter, second and goal for the broth. I love a guy, a running back named strong. You better get something. Yeah, its an all name team for sure. Pierre strong, 20 to 19 browns. Seven minutes left steelers defense again. This is how we started the show. Hey, look, its t. J. Watt again. Well, its the same play. Oh shocker. Well you know what . You know what is the same alex highsmith, who accounted for the other touchdown, created the fumble. So the steelers win this game by a final of 26, 22. Theyre one and one. The browns are one and one. The bengals are. Oh, and two. We thought they were going to be the best team in the division ravens two and oh, lets move on. Derek carr and the saints trying to go two and zero against carolina bat this the first half of this game was almost unwatchable. Oh it was slow sacked twice and thats into triple coverage there picked by vonn bell six three was the score on field goals with three minutes left in the half but ensuing drive the rookie first pick bryce young strip sack goes down here. Saints recover. Oh brother Precision Football right there it was his parents watching their six three at the half. He stayed in the game hes fine. Third quarter tied at six. Chris olave ohio state does turn out some receivers ive noticed. Yeah they they turn out some pass catchers for sure but watch that this is all concentration that ball out there dude hanging on your arm and you still find a way to pull it in. Thats outstanding effort and tony jones junior were the first of his two scores on the night carolina fans. Well, im sorry that says it all, doesnt it . It does. It does. Saints win 2017. They go two and zero. Lets focus on carr. This is his 10th year in the league. Of course, we saw him with the raiders both in oakland and l. A. Struggled was up and down first year with the saints and they have high hopes for him tonight. I mean 21 to 36, 228 yards. No touchdowns a pick. Hes one of those middle tier guys. He he and Jimmy Garoppolo almost the same in some ways. He was on bad teams for a lot of time. But give me your take on on dc it never helps to not have all the talent right you want to have all the tools. So hes never really had all the tools, but hes kind of a see it and throw it guy from the from the tape that i have broken down on derek carr he wants to see his receiver open. I talk about anticipation a lot and you have to have it as a quarterback. Like if youre a see it and throw it guy you either have to preset all of your progressions so that you know exactly where youre going with the ball or make the first progression work or you have to put up with a little bit of lateness in the throw. And in the nfl, being late means youre going to miss a lot. Having great receivers like chris love out there making catches for you is huge, but if you have to see a guy open, youre going to be late a lot. You see how derek carr has to throw the ball hard down the field and flat if with anticipation that ball comes out early with air and you give your guy a chance to run for it, hes been coached by a lot of guys. You could see hes there, separation there on the olave play. You know, he obviously trusts him enough to throw it up and let him make a play. Kind of like the one year with Devante Adams can you coach that out of a guy i mean in year ten, you throw it three steps earlier, you throw it on the break instead of after the break, before you see him set his ankle, you understand where hes going. And you put that ball up there and i say this derek carr is a really good quarterback. However, the great quarterbacks, the guys that you look at and go, mahomes go down the list steve young montana for niners guys i mean all those type of guys they have incredible anticipation of whats going to happen and trust some of that comes from chemistry. A bunch of it comes from film study, from from working in the film room and doing the work on the xs and os and knowing your game inside out, understanding what the defense is going to give you. But really, all of that chemistry works together so that you trust the guy that youre throwing the ball to and the see it and throw it. Guy doesnt trust where that throw is going to go. He has to see the angle set before he lets go of that ball. And its hard to be outstanding if youre a see it and throw it, especially with the windows in the nfl being so small, so small, dudes are so fast. Steve young used to say in college, everybodys wide open all the time. And then in the nfl, its like youve got to throw the ball through a keyhole or more to come. On toyota after the game, there were some funny clips, some funny stuff, a couple in particular, mike mcdaniel, who knew he had to speak. Its a sprint. Hes like mostert the most sarathi well be right back but do they really . Do they see all that you are . At Kaiser Permanente all of us Work Together to care for all that is you. Intentional grounding offense number seven. Thats a ten yard penalty. And im talking to america here. Excuse me, a ten yard penalty and a loss of down. Second down. That is the best line ive
