Party at an artist warehouse. Somewhere between 50 and 100 people, the estimates vary. I dont want to commit to hundreds, but they were believed to be inside the building at 31st avenue and international boulevard at the fruitvale neighborhood. Lets go to vic. Reporter this is the 3100 block of east 12th street. Behind me is the building. A little while ago you could see during the last live shot a lot of the dump trucks here staging. Now its ceased. Take a closer look. This is where the dump trucks have been coming in and out. It was, if you will, a staging area for the cleanup. We have seen some pretty strange things coming out. The most unusual, if you will, was workers taking out what was definitely missile heads. Thats right. The ones that you fire off. Two missile heads they were taking off, in fact, taking out, in fact, in an hour. Now, this building is an artists colony. A lot of a vaunt guard work here. Missiles are strange. The crews are moving out. They were taking out debris. A lot of trucks were coming in and out, but there seems to be not as much activity and i guess the neighbors had been complaining to the city quite a bit about the debris here. One of those neighbors is jeff seravat. He called it sort of an eyesore, but he also saw the fire from beginning to end, and what he said was rather ominous. I didnt see very many people come out at all, to be honest, just the people that were already outside, and so that was what really, really bothered me, just not seeing anybody come out, and the way that building was burning. Yeah, it was scary. It was a scary sight. Just thinking about the people trapped in there. Well, weve all seen a lot of people bring flowers here. There are two spots here on the corner with a lot of flowers placed onto the fences. Obviously theyre here to show their support and for the people here, the families who have lost a loved ones, and theyre, frankly, here because they wanted to express their sadness and sorrow. Now, again, were looking at the Building Back live. You dont see a lot of the dump trucks here anymore, but you do see those blue tents over there. The blue tents are basically evidence tents. Now, the Sheriffs Office has a big role in this operation. They are the ones in charge of the Coroners Office, and the ones in charge of the crime lab for alameda alcantara. As the bodies are removed, they would be taken to the tents for initial processing and then theyll be taken to the Coroners Officer. The Alameda CountySheriffs Office visible and important in this operation post fire. Thats the very latest from east 12th street. Back to you. Vic, thank you for that update. And sky 7 really got a revealing shot showing the patch work of wooden framing and debris rescuers are forced to deal with. You see firefighters inside of the framing of the bidding in fact a lot of the debris has melted and firefighters said theyre actually going to have to cut bodies from the wreckage before they can be identified. We are also at the scene with more about what went wrong, and there was a lot that went wrong. Reporter quite a bit that went wrong. Its interesting the perspective you pointed out earlier. Probably 24 hours ago or so there were a lot of people who were in this neighborhood, probably trying to find parking so they could make their way into this music venue. Now 24 hours later, look at the different scene were in the middle of. Were in the middle of an intersection that has dozens of journalists. There is forensics tents where the Sheriffs Department is going to be making some initial identification of any bodies they are pulling out. And then theres a whole bunch of other equipment from the Sheriffs Department, from the police department. There are fire crews here continuing to remove things from that building. Lets go ahead and go to some video from sky 7 that was shot a little bit earlier, and you can see what is left of this warehouse. Its basically a bit of a skeleton left of the structure itself. Its essentially been carved out by the fire. What we have been told by fire investigators is that in the midst of those flames, the roof collapsed on to the second floor, and then portions of the second famililoor collapsed ont ground familiar. Urban search and rescue teams have been making an effort throughout the afternoon to try to fortify some of the structures within that building because we know that they are may have been precare yus even before this fire. We have been talking a little bit this evening about a particular structure in there, a spiral staircase. I talked with one woman who kind of described what she saw when she went into that building a few days ago. It looked pretty junkie. Lots of boxy, weird boxes with curtains and people lived in there, like spaces, i guess, art space, and theres like a staircase in the middle, just made out of no no structure whatsoever. Its just like, just piles of stuff up to reach tovt top floor. As we do the recovery we have to be mindful of the investigation that is to come. The second part of this, and so we have to make sure that we preserve the debris and wreckage properly so it can be looked at later. Thats all being taken into account. And were being told that they are actually taking a lot of that debris that they are pulling out, and theyre putting them in large bins so they can sift through a little bit later as part of the Ongoing Investigation to figure out what started this fire, but we know this is a structure that is only permitted as a warehouse, but we also know that there are people who are living there. You can imagine that theres a couple of Different Things that you in the permitting process, to make a structure safe, you have to make sure theres Running Water and a bunch of other requirements. Also to make sure that there are proper fire Safety Equipment being able to get into and out of the structure in a safe way. Unfortunately, thats just not what happened here. There was people who were living here, and we are being told that by not only people who live in the area but also friends who have been coming by here to try to see if people who lived here may have survived. Right now this is an operation thats going to be a 24 hour operation for at least the next two days or so. Reporting live in oakland, abc7 news. Thank you. Oakland City Council Member living in the neighborhood rerepresents was there early this morning watching an emotional scene unfold. I stood on the corner at 3 00 in the morning crying because they lost some friends. They went to the party because it was posted online. They were in the party. Reporter theres still about 50 people inside the Sheriffs Department behind me waiting for news about their loved ones. I was told they will be giving notification later tonight. And this is a very intense drawn out process for a reason. Its going slowly, and that also means the families are getting frustrated. Unfortunately their sadness is also growing. The tears and emotion came quickly as the night wore on. Theres a list inside with those missing and unaccounted and some flew in from out of town and came straight here from the airport hoping to get information. In fact, a woman approached me a few minutes ago with a plea for help to find her missing sisterinlaw. Please just call us. Were all looking for you. Your mom, your dad, everybody. Your husband. Please, can you just call any of us if youre around, something happened. We dont care. We just want to know if youre alive or not. In the meantime the city of oakland is giving these folks a lot of support, as much as they can. They can putting families up in hotels and paying for some travel costs. Theyre feeding them and getting them as much support as they can in this very, very challenging time.
